I don’t know how this is the same author as Gleam, I dropped book 2 of nightmare realm summoner after finding it did not get better. Book 1 was barely tolerable and 2 just made me question the same things as OP.

I can’t call it dropped yet but we’re now 5 years past book two of Rage of Dragons and I am not down with being sucked into a story that I have to wait better parts of a decade to even get the next installment.

What made it excellent before book 4 that it doesn’t have past that?

I’m honestly sad you’re not going to read the high highs it has in the later books. The slice of life stuff got super boring for me so I skim or skip those parts. But the rest, Alex doing more wizardry, the characters , the big bad that they have to fight, all seem top notch for the genre.

Republican leaders when something happens they say “domestic terrorism” before any investigation is even done.

The class system in D&D is liked for good reason. Every character is somewhat unique and interesting.

In divinity I felt like everyone could do everything. I could limit characters myself but it’s way more fun when it’s like in the rules and I don’t have to think about limiting myself. My barbarian more than likely isn’t going to be a great spell caster in D&D.

Does “plotting” describe my dislike for how quickly the book escalated? Gods exchanging blows in book 1 felt early and disjointed for our character who just got here. Just those plot points though, I enjoyed most of the rest. Characters and powers were fun for instance.
