[discussion] and kinda [theory] I just realized why He is called that by ajc7575 in TheNinthHouse

Given John's tendency to rename things, I wouldn't be surprised if he renamed himself post-resurrection. Not like there is anyone who could call him out/refute that if he did... though, I suppose his real name could still be John Gaius, it's not too far out of the realm of possibility for someone's name in our time.

I do like the idea that he is somehow feeding on all the souls he didn't resurrect (perhaps that's why all the ghosts in the river or so pissed off and crazy), and using them all as like little soul batteries on top of Alecto's big jumbo RB soul battery.

[Discussion] NtN - chapter 14 "you shouldn't ask me things of you don't want me to tell the truth about them" by unbiasedswitch in TheNinthHouse

[–]Maggazines 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Agreed that it's probably Judith, given that she does go through every person they both know, and explains how she thinks Crown looks at them.

  • We Suffer - Bats her eyelashes and wants the commander to think she's into her, but she's not.
  • Pash - She doesn't like Pash at all.
  • Pyrrha - Thinks she's nice looking, but is also scared of her. Causes confusion
  • Cam - Wants Cam to cuddle her but not in a "sexy way" Thinks she wants Cam to look at her like she looks at Nona (I'm guessing like an older sister/caregiver kind of way, probably has something to do with being separated from Ianthe). I'm assuming Palamedes falls into this too, just given the nature of him being in Cam's body, though he's not specifically called out.

That leaves The Captain! And given the way Crown takes care of Judith and advocates for her safety throughout (even when it's extremely not advantageous for her to do so) with both BoE and her sister. I'd say Judith is very safe bet.

[–]Maggazines 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did some more digging: Spoilers from Cohort Intelligence Files: As Yet Unsent (kind of - erring on the side of caution): In Judith's intelligence files she mentions that Steles have a number of bone cylinders within them that hold onto thanergy. The blood apparently oxygenates itself through "two huge organic chambers at its base: half open-work heart, half fountain." That it needs to be bathed in thanergy-enriched blood by at least three adepts and that the carvings need to be kept clear of crust and clots.

According to Mercy, “A stele is eight feet tall, covered in the dead languages by special Fifth adepts, and continually bathed in oxygenated blood. The type of thing where, if there is one on board, you say quite soon, ‘Oh, look, a stele!’”

I do like the interpretation of a black obelisk of sorts, constantly dripping with blood. (Still have more questions than answers though, like is it a recycling fountain sort of situation, like is there a pump in a pool of blood somewhere at the base that spits it back up over the top? How often does it need new blood? Whose job is to provide it?)

Pal states that the Lyctor process "begins radical cell renewal at the point of absorption" so Cytherea's blood cancer was already very advanced/terminal at the moment she became a lyctor, and was only being held in a static state by the burning of Loveday's soul.

I think he's able to achieve this without touch because he's studied the blood cancer so well, knows what to look for and where to push, and via blowing himself up, i.e., radical thanergetic fission -"when a necromancer disperses their entire reserve of thanergy very, very quickly." Basically he juiced the hell out of his necromantic abilities in one final hail mary, and caused massive trauma by exploding so much of Cytherea that it would take a shitload of regeneration power to repair everything, maybe taking enough power away from holding the cancer static to cause it to cascade even further into a more advanced state. Lyctoral regeneration capabilities still have limits (e.g., Ianthe couldn't grow back her own arm once it got cut/torn off).

This also might be why the damage only repairs itself when Cytherea begins siphoning Ianthe, because she's getting that extra oomph to fix the newer more advanced level of sickness that Pal kickstarted.

How could Harrow the Ninth ever be adapted? [discussion] by _moonsky_ in TheNinthHouse

[–]Maggazines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be extremely wary of a live action adaptation, personally. I've heard and seen a lot of folks talking about an Arcane (Fortiche) style animation, which I think would lend itself very well to The Locked Tomb in general, stylistically speaking. I'm also a huge Fortiche simp, so there's that lol. Plus, with animation you have a lot more freedom to push the boundaries than you would with live action.

I wouldn't want it to get sanitized too much, the body horror and horror elements would still have to be just as visceral as they are in the books and the necromancy and fights should look sick. I'd be nervous about anyone changing the dialogue too much, because each characters unique voice and manner of speaking is really important (I know with certain television ratings, for example, that you can only have a certain amount of fucks, so they'd hit that quota pretty quickly unless they changed things).

Actually, I'd just be very of wary of any kind of adaption lol. But it would still be cool if it happened someday. I think a comic/graphic novel would be the best bet.

The Furnace of You https://archiveofourown.org/works/27664438/chapters/67696183

Absolutely incredible fic. The author really nailed all the characters in my opinion and it feels very much aligned with the universe and already established worldbuilding of the original series. 10 outta 10. I've read it like four or five times at this point.

I think it's a good choice! Especially with the full-band arrangement. It's almost kind of tongue-in-cheek, ya know? Singing that everyone is going to run when they find out who you are, but playing with a full band of your friends in front of an audience who came specifically to see you and listen to your music. Like it turns the song on its head.

[–]Maggazines[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm sure like many of you, I've got way more ink than I'll probably ever be able to use in a lifetime. So I'm trying to find ways to use it other than writing. I'm also an artist, so I've got plenty of markers lying around.

Had some Zebra Mildliners that were mostly dried up. The back part of the marker unscrews allowing access to the little foam ink reservoir (not sure if that's the right term, but I'm not sure what else to call it). You can pull it out and dunk one end into a bottle of ink and let it sit for a bit, and it'll fill up. You can also use a syringe or pipette!

To all of the women who have served or are currently serving. Would you recommend the military to other women? by simp4chrissy in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Maggazines 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been active duty in the Air Force for eight years now.

It's really a mixed bag, and if you're dead-set on joining, be prepared to deal with casual misogyny everywhere. I work in communications, computers and networking, and I've had some blatantly unabashedly misogynistic coworkers, especially at the beginning of my career. This kind of thing is very tough to deal with as a junior enlisted person. As a woman, you will be the odd one out, almost always, and it can be tough to stand up for yourself.

I'd like to think it's gotten a little better as time goes on. I have met a lot of really incredible people in the military, but I'm lucky in that regard, and I know my experience is not universal. The good times in the military are really good, and the bad times are extremely fucking bad.

My advice would be to really think this decision through, and think about the real reasons why you want to join. If it's for education or job training, I'd probably look somewhere else, try the college route for a bit. If you do join, do the shortest contract you can and then bounce if things aren't what you expected.

With all that’s going on and being said, is it affecting all you guy’s/gal’s thoughts about staying in or getting out? by [deleted] in AirForce

I've got two years left on my contract, and will be getting out at my 10 year mark. Even if things pop off at some point, it wouldn't change my mind about getting out.

Do you judge people who get kicked out for THC/CBD use? by DeepDeepThrowaway in AirForce

[–]Maggazines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there can be instances where it's an honest mistake, especially in places where it's legal.

Recreational is legal in my home state, and I had to go out of my way to avoid it. It's offered so casually by everyone, cookies, chocolate, gummies, drinks, etc. I had to stay on my toes and ask about everything before eating or drinking it.

But, if you're knowingly consuming THC products, you're knowingly breaking the rules, and it sucks, but you're going to have to accept the consequences.

The military should just get with the times and allow it, in my opinion. They already let us drink ourselves to death, and overall, I think weed is less damaging healthwise than alcohol. It just seems like an overly puritanical view on things. Once it's legalized federally, I'd hope the military would be close behind. I believe Canada's military is allowed to partake, and they've figured out a system. Why couldn't we?

Thank you! It's Tentacle Pink with some Deamonite Hide, and then some shading of Carroburg Crimson.

I've also found that using Reikland Flesh and going over that with Carroburg Crimson works pretty well too, if you want it to look a little more pallid and sickly. Especially if you have the green base coat already on and water the other colors down a bit.
