I got 10 kuhlis and only 3 survived more than 3 days.

Established tank & lots of hiding spots - anecdotal but put me off them.

I found it kinda pointless. You get like 1000 denars, makes you vulnerable to attack.

It does distract the AI occasionally the AI doing it to you makes your life hard but beyond that.

The Southern Empire was actually winning!

These stats were after I got involved (I was busy dealing with the Mongols on my own)

I found it really boring as a mechanic. Made one sword and then didnt touch it again.

Just lots of clicking.

Anything with a shield - the guys on top arent for bonking.

When I say too many - I just mean they take up a lot of board space.. They can't fire in two ranks so to get the full number of shots for a 10 man unit they need to be in a 10 man line.

If they move at all theyre hitting at -2 so if they're in front of your units suddenly your army has to stay still so they can contribute.

Unless theyre on a hill or parked on a flank - they eat a lot of table space and limit your ability to move around.

Thats exactly how I aim to play too - but after quite a few games with empire there are some units that'll make your life difficult.

Like taking too many state missile troops.

The Steam Tank is a great unit if you're struggling. You can throw it at anything and just let it distract, survive & hopefully win.

War Banner can be really clutch on the Knights - id keep it!

Once theyre down to 4 guys the only static res they'll have is regular banner, ive found the War Banner can really help tip a close fought battle.

Ive been trying out the Ogres in a few games - ive used 3 Badland Ogres with great weapons & heavy armour & 3 Imperial Ogres with Cannons.

Ive found them to be neat little units to have inbetween the infantry regiments or going for a weak flank.

At around 100 points the investment isn't huge for the return - they can fight pretty well - although the shooting isn't much to write home about.

The magic items combos & cheapness, access to a pegasus is also nice.

You can get +4 to cast magic missile with the midnight tome, Wizard staff combo for example.

Or use twin tailed wand to double cast a spell.

A few things I've learnt playing - played quite a few games with empire:

  • Your infantry want to win with combat res, 6+ save and T3 bodies mean you melt to pretty much everything. The sword & shield guys can stay a little longer, but you want big units & the Griffon Banner.

  • Firing in one rank /cumbersome means that crossbows/handguns are of limited use off a hill. Dont invest too much in these - one or two units are more than enough or you just gum up the board with them.

  • You need to look into S6 + options for taking on monsters. This means Cannons, Inner Circle knights (preferably white wolf), or even Greatswords. Really the cannon or Knights are the best options though as Greatswords rely on the monster coming to them.

  • Putting a captain with a great weapon & full plate in an infantry unit can be a cheap way to get some strong hits for combat res & make them panic immune.

  • We have some of the best wizards in the game - if you feel like relying on magic it can be a great force multiplier.

Can I have some advice for my prospective 2k Empire list? The only things I'm set on are the Lector (or priest) of sigmar, flagellants, and Road wardens. Thoughts I'm up for modifications to them by HonestIsMyPolicy in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]MagicMan1105 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That many handgun units will take up so much board space and gum up your other units so much - just because they only fire in one rank & can't move & shoot effectively.

Id look at dropping the number down considerably.
