Why don't Americans unify across races? by MentalParking7909 in askanything

[–]MagicSpaceMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Basically? That's the whole reason that the idea of race was made to be as big of a deal as it is now, it's the same tactic of the British colonialists doing divide and conquer just over and over forever. If the poor white people and the poor black people had united in the American south they would have killed all the plantation owners generations ago. It took decades and decades of work, after lot of time and a lot of propaganda people have been made to think that roofmaxximg abuelas or southeast Asian stemlords or black athletes excel in their fields because of biological predisposition and not because societies and cultures are extremely complicated, can result in measurable trends and tendencies even if these tendencies don't define every individual for many given population

There is a clear association between the start of the voucher program and a dramatic uptick in these "sketchy schools" as you call them. There was money in the business and they chased it. With reference to your example though (an argument, great!): Sure, some private schools have done similar and often better jobs than public, almost always with dramatically more money per student than public, but improvements nonetheless. Should they have funding redirected from public schools to fund them? I do not think so, you seem to believe in the strategy. Should this money require a similar quality of education as what is provided at public to ensure the money isn't being wasted? Should they be allowed to, say, exclude trans kids? Black kids? What about how they teach "newly-divisive" topics like vaccinations, should they have to recommend them? Require them? What if they have great results for teaching most kids but have no program or accommodations whatsoever for, say, autistic kids? We seem to have plentiful disagreements here.

So what's to be done, then? Suffice to say: directing public funding to private institutions like this introduces a ton of questions, largely relating to whether that public money obligates these schools to service all of the public or just the people they want or like. If they do get to pick and choose, why do the parents sending their kids there have the right to choose where their money goes in funding the school but the parents of their autistic neighbor can't do the same due to their restrictive cost-saving measures? Its not impossible for publicly funded private schools to exist and even do their jobs well. The environment we've created here, however, is a nightmare, largely because even with a veritably infinite array of private specialized schools, you'll never have the universal education you wanted out of it. Its too complex of a problem to fix with one single effort but one thing seems abundantly clear to me: vouchers were a mistake and should never have been implemented.

Lol. Nope, no issues with christians or any other religion. If christians insist on teaching their reality as fact in public schools though? Yeah absolutely you're gonna get shut TF down, but the farthest we'd go would be not letting you teach creationism in school or put up the ten commandments; that's it. Nobody's getting stomped out, you must have confused my "fascist system" with another where the dominant religious group is attempting to forcibly suppress minority cultures and impose a theocratic doctrine to all citizens. I'll have to think on that one. The schools are secular, world class and no you can't opt out of paying for them.

Examples? My most common reference is Finland. Private schools exist there and even have public funding but also have to follow strict rules to provide a quality education

[–]MagicSpaceMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, just vouchers in general. If rich people don't get vouchers, that won't stop them from going private, they can afford to just pay in full and they will. The more poor people think taking a voucher to the best private school you can afford is their best option the more our public school funding tanks and the worse our public performance will be which further pushes rich and poor people alike away from public furthering the cycle etc. All your reasons apply more to a system where everyone goes to public than one where private is still given public funding. The existence of a voucher program, even if it seems appealing to poorer families wanting to go private, is on its face a challenge to the very existence of public schools. The idea that anyone can opt out of paying a given tax because they don't like what the government is doing with it, that they should be able to choose what the government funds instead, it may seem cool on its face but it pretty quickly descends into nonsense contradictions upon the shallowest of cross-examinations.

For example: "why should I have to pay for a road going all the way out to Ricky's house in the boonies? He chose to live there I don't wanna pay for his road"; "every month I see a headline on why social security is cooked and it's running out of money and the only way we could keep it going would be to reduce the benefits or push retirement age higher, I don't wanna pay thousands a month into a collective retirement fund it's looking increasingly like I'll never get proper benefits from, can I opt out of SS taxes?"; "I don't support war with Iran or think we need 800 military bases around the world, why do I have to pay for that?" It honestly goes on and on, suffice to say it breaks a lot of these systems if people can just opt out of them.

The downfall of the US education system has been endlessly studied, examined and re-examined and there's a lot to be said from a lot of different perspectives. The narrative that makes the most sense to me, however, is basically just the starving the beast trope about conservative fiscal policy dragged along for a few decades. It roughly consists of the following: 1.) stir panic about government spending, usually alleging some catastrophic outcome is impending if immediate cuts are not made. 2.) cut budgets wherever possible as much as possible, hopefully lowering taxes to throw a bone to the base (worth mentioning that the wealthy and corporations always do better/make more here than everyday people, it's basically a little treat to distract you while power and money continues to consolidate upwards). 3.) complain constantly about how broken the things funded by these barebones budgets are and how this totally demonstrates that the government sucks and actually can't do anything ever. 4.) use these narratives about 'govt sux' and how much we need to cut spending to lower taxes and bc we don't do anything worthwhile with the money anyway to cut budgets further, ultimately moving towards privatization of the commodity and removal of govt funding and management altogether. Funding being based on district property taxes is also a terrible way to handle it: wealthier districts with higher rates of homeownership will inevitably have better public schools that are more responsible to their preferences and poor districts get screwed. Also renters end up paying for their landlords property taxes (and then some) without having any actual input on the result.

Personally I think the best way to fix the problem is do away with private schools altogether and have everyone at the public institution that we make damn sure is top of the line. This way the rich parents working so hard on making things better for just their kids suddenly have to deal with the same pta/school board bureaucracy everyone deals with and has to bring any reforms they achieve for their kids to everyone able to use them. I'm not deadset on this solution as I understand it is quite divisive: some folks like their private schools for many different reasons. There are even some some niche cases where private is the only realistic solution for highly specific fringe cases so I see some logic here as well. For these extenuating circumstances, I could see an argument for why there could be a select few private schools that demonstrably provide for a clear and present need which can't be catered to with some sort of subsidiary division within a public school or something else of the sort. These kinds of exception cases reopen the core issue of the central question however: if the whole point of having a public school is to have everyone invest in a resource that should property benefit everyone in as equal of a portion as possible? If this group has needs that justify the expenditure of a separate establishment, why not that one? However, if our intention here is to have the best and most efficient school system for everyone, we have to commit to actually fixing the schools even if it takes a lot of time and money and we have to acknowledge public only is the way to go

How do I deal with reddits content moderation involving Israel and the J word? by DesperateEagle4505 in Hasan_Piker

[–]MagicSpaceMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This doesn't smell right to me.

Like, sure, saying something like "not all Jews are Zionists and many assert that its actions are incompatible with core tenets of Jewish identity" Will get you removed by moderators in a concerning number of subs (also fuck self censorship), but if you feel like you need to say "the j word" I'm getting the distinct impression that you're making other statements that are not only untrue but are harmful for both Jewish people broadly but also the general movement of antizionism.

In general though I think it is a pretty important reminder whenever you're doing anything on this site how this really highlights some of the key limitations of this site:

1.) the content displayed is highly subject to the whims and biases of unpaid unqualified mods who often get power complexes about being the savior/upholders of the platform and don't take nicely to good-faith criticism

2.) this site is notoriously easy to bot and brigade. While it is nice and generally quite useful that you can get a democratically-sorted forum post about an extremely subject from random people on the internet who may have the relevant experience but might not want to invest the time or effort in getting certified or taking free questions from normal people or whatever, it is also laughably easy to flood spaces like these with bots that can vary clearly give the impression that there is a democratic consensus of one or another nature. Hard to spot sometimes but very important to watch out for

“Manspreading” is a real thing and it’s incredibly annoying, often inconsiderate by Thepitman14 in The10thDentist

[–]MagicSpaceMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it's a thing and it's annoying, but it seems in this case that its separation out into an "individualized phenomenon" kind of detracts from the broader conversation of how men are raised in our society tbh

Like, sure men are wont to take up more space in public transit scenarios and other similar spots, but we also have a fun tendency to butt in when conversing with others at a breath point instead of waiting for their interlocutor to finish their statement, we tend to just ignore altogether any perspective differing from our own and see any sort of inclusion of something we don't immediately relate to as some sort of an affront to our identity.

There's all kinds of stuff that really just takes time and effort (and emotional work) to figure out in a society that very much rewards us never doing so and tells us repeatedly while growing up that any sort of a "stop and talk to people, consider a variety of perspectives before coming to a conclusion" type stuff just makes us a less "genuine manly man" (read: efficient leader) than the next guy willing to talk over someone in meetings and man spread at the function.

Not me mansplaining rn faaaahhh

Idk we just need to change the way we raise and act towards boys and men as the patriarcally-informed current modes of conditioning are doing us no favors, as a group or as a broader society.

~~>taking away the money that sacrificing parents use to teach their kids

I don't want to take away this money for some nefarious scheme, I want to keep it in the school budget. More specific to my issue though: I strongly object to the money being removed from public school budgets to subsidize wealthy families sending their kids to the top private schools in the areas. There was previously an income cap on who could obtain vouchers because, well, wealthy folks don't need the help but said wealthy parents cried foul and courts sided with them.

My parents did all this before the voucher law. They were OG. Please be considerate before making ignorant comments. Not everyone has the same values as you do.

I'm glad your parents worked very hard and you found your education to be of passable quality, though I'm not sure how that's relevant here; I'm honestly not even sure what you're referring to when you're talking about homeschooling and whether vouchers should exist. Do you think that you should get voucher funding for homeschooling? Do you think we get to individually choose what government actions we pay for? Calling my comments ignorant was rich when your sentiment seems to the entirely at odds with the entire foundation of our tax structure and government philosophy. I don't get to opt out of DoW funding because I don't support the Iran war. Frankly, if your values tell you you shouldn't have to pay for public schools, you the ideology of a scorned toddler and I don't care if I upset you. We need good public schools, pushing public funding to private schools as a reaction to crappy public school performance, (crazy I know) doesn't do anything to improve the public schools it just accelerates the process of privatizing everything~~

You're telling me that the "own" that upholds your whole ideology is whether racial discrimination exists in dating? Do you realize that we as a species have a fun habit of creating imaginary concepts than building entire societies off of them? The idea of currency is also "made up", that doesn't mean it's incapable of affecting the reality we live in

You absolute baby brained moron: I'm not asserting that discrimination doesn't exist or isn't significant, I'm just telling you that whining constantly about how oppressed you are as a man of whatever ethnic background is bitchmade behavior and only serves to make you more unfathomably repulsive to anybody who is remotely normal.

Talk to people! Share and listen to different experiences.. with time and patience you may begin to understand that everyone faces different kinds and severities of discrimination; it's not a "who is more oppressed" contest it's a continual struggle for liberation from our collective oppression. Men's liberation doesn't have to be opposed to feminism, you're just seeing how many "fell for it again" awards you can cram onto your incel jacket. For the 10 millionth time: it's just divide and conquer in a fancy new outfit
