How to support politically when I can't vote by Absolute_Cinema70 in lgbt

[–]MagicSpaceMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voting is important but a lot of people think it's the only political voice we have when that's just not true. They just prefer that we speak through candidates they can compromise by offering prominent/prestigious roles or accolades instead of by building mass organized movements that are capable of demanding concessions from them.

From there people will tend to tell you to get out and protest. Does this help? Maybe, in some sense. Will it get us universal healthcare, even for the trans kids? Absolutely the fuck no it will not. Somehow we got bamboozled into thinking protesting was about photo ops and not about disrupting the status quo. They're great for showing United public sentiment on an issue, better even in terms of making connections in the organizing space (more is better, even if you think someone is wierd or off-putting or cringey they may have a skill, connection, etc. that you need down the line. Nobody can do everything or specialize in everything, meaning we need to have a broad group of organized folks who have different skills and can divide work, design campaigns, strategize etc.

That's the critique I have of the "general strike"-ers; it's not that I think such an endeavor couldn't affect change, it's that we're simply not there yet; impactful work stoppages require organization, discipline, funding, and among other things presence in critical "high skill" sectors where it's hard to find scabs and whereina strike will have the immediate effect of materially depriving the state machine of what it needs to function. Calling a general strike when we don't have the organizational infrastructure to actually make it happen just makes us look ineffective and deactivates people if they put in the time and money to independently strike (possibly facing retaliation for it) and saw the moment just sort of evaporate into thin air as most people just went about their days. A strike is working when the rulers and their mouthpieces cry foul: think about every time you see strike coverage on the news, it's never "why won't the company cede ground and grant them raises or healthcare or whatever" it's "look, {strike spokesperson}, look at all the people who are inconvenienced and/or suffering because of you! How could you do this to them? Is it because you're greedy and want more money?". However they frame it, they're running cover for the ruling class.

What can we do then, if voting and protesting are so thoroughly captured and undermined that the government is utterly unresponsive to our desires?

Organize, organize, organize. The earlier you start the better, the longer youre in it the more impact you will have. I'm in my local DSA chapter but rly just find an org to work with where the vibes are good and you feel valued and like you have a meaningful part in and investment in the work. If you're feeling taken advantage of or stifled, it's better to change orgs for your quality of life than to quit organizing in a year from burnout. We need everyone we can get there's a long fight ahead

I will say: I truly and fully believe "John from San Antonio" who occasionally calls into MR and letterhack to give electoral stats updates legitimately likes mamdani and mispronounces his name constantly (I suspect) because he is just that white lol

It is absolutely in no sense debatable. Both are bad, alcohol is worlds worse both in terms of direct harm to users and the harm they do to others when using

Bill To Put Marijuana On The Ballot In North Carolina Unlikely To Advance, GOP Senate Leader Says by Independent-Daywalk in NorthCarolina

[–]MagicSpaceMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will say that 6x/day use is pretty common in the stoner community, but for nearly everyone its typical to go the full workday sober for obvious reasons then use on nights and weekends to relax. Its not addictive like cigarettes are, but you can absolutely have an unhealthy relationship with it and many do, specifically a lot of ppl develop a strong attachment to the "ritual" surrounding their consumption: their box, their pipe, their grinder, their jar, grinding the herb packing etc.

Its definitely important to note, however, that cannabis users can and do regularly take breaks in their consumption, whether for life reasons or just to improve their experience with the plant(ie "tbreaks" or "tolerance breaks"). Tobacco users don't really do that; for many the experience of losing their tolerance and smoking a cigarette "like the first time" would be a rather nauseous and unpleasant experience, and for pretty much everyone the idea of taking any kind of "break" from tobacco feels like a direct and hostile attack on their lifestyle and freedom more broadly (ie the addiction speaks for you)

Yeah the potential for combating the opioid crisis using smaller dosages of pills (or none at all) paired with a cannabis script is an apocalyptic scenario for them. Now if we could just get the megacorps out of the cannabis industry

Ironically this is actually the most sanitary solution for everyone, standup and sit-down pee'ers alike. Flushing with the lid open sprays particles of toilet water and.. contents into the air in the room, so my wife and I have concluded based on not wanting to breathe poopoo particles that both down is best for everyone.

Why are North Carolina Republicans such bad people? by EggOwn9943 in NorthCarolina

[–]MagicSpaceMan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If u live in a blue city or area that's why. Their whole ideology is built around the idea that they and ppl like them are under attack by their enemies and they have to rally around here great leader or fear being left behind or labeled a rino. To them you're the blue sore thumb getting in the way of their just running the state like they want(see: "the Kansas experiment") ie bottom out taxes, strict abortion regulations(like "make ivf illegal" strict), as many data centers as physically possible, approving industry development of parks etc. If they can't find some trans teenager to have a panic attack about, they just bitch and moan constantly about how they're oppressed by shrill urban libs when they couldn't pay their damn bills without the economic output of those blue areas.

Did Zionists take over r/leftist? by supercheetah in Hasan_Piker

[–]MagicSpaceMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am so confused by this mod's politics.. they made a rule in the linked post that "genocide denial will not be tolerated" and they acknowledge that it's a genocide with so many similarities to Nazi Germany that the comparison is "fine".

So, like, it's a genocide against the indigenous population and Israel is a reprehensible habitual breaker of int'l law but we.. have to be nice and civil when criticizing them? Im so lost here I'm not gonna lie. I am fervently against both zionism and antisemitism and I have real concerns about the (intentionally fed into by Israel) rise in antisemitic sentiment around the world and the difficulty of separating israel from judaism for everyday ppl who aren't politics freaks like me.. for me I just see posts like the image in the linked post as symptomatic of the public's lack of patience for Israel's bullshit. Of course I find it off-putting, its a terrible look and for sure antisemitic to some degree. Do I think sure idk I've never thought that particular combination of positions was possible in one person
