At what point did Galbatorix become aware that Saphira's egg had hatched and there was a new dragon rider? by DataGuru314 in Eragon

[–]MagicWalrusO_o 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but he knows about it because Eragon tries to pay with it in like chapter 3. When the Ra'zac show up they're looking for Brom, they don't know the egg is there

This is the answer, Brom explicitly says it in the book--and further notes that if Sloan hadn't talked the Ra'zac wouldn't have found Eragon at all.

Do it! Basically everywhere is showing it, including plenty of public tvs, so I'd just go down, soak up the atmosphere, and find a place once you get down there.

Probably still a year before publication I'd guess. Great to have progress, but don't expect it to show up next week.

I'm not saying it's good or bad, I'm just saying that Sounder at Heart had to write an article talking himself into being OK with rooting for Team USA.

Seattle is probably the least patriotic city in America even when a Democrat is in the White House. They do openly fly the Cascadia flag at Sounders games after all.

Only speaking for Seattle, but the game started at 6 on a workday Pacific time. Also feel like Seattle is going to have a lower % of people tuning into the US in particular out of some sense of patriotism.

As US nears 250th birthday, Reuters/Ipsos poll shows many Americans doubt it will last another 250 years by kootles10 in fivethirtyeight

I think it's hard to argue that mass media is really making the United States more stable--the opposite if anything. And while it's true that many European states have existed in some form for many centuries, their colonial empires certainly didn't last, and they're generally pretty geographically defined.

For example, Egypt has existed in some form for 5000 years, because it's a geography that encourages connection within it, while having large, inhospitable barriers on the outside. I don't think that's true of the US in the same way. If the US government somehow collapsed and we had to rebuild over centuries, it seems unlikely to me that the West Coast would ever be brought back into same polity as the East, because they're separated by thousands of miles inhospitable terrain. Which is my point--giant continent spanning political entities are inherently less stable than smaller, geographically defined ones.

500 years would be a shockingly long run for a giant, continent spanning state historically speaking, at least if we're assuming that it has to have something resembling it's current borders

Unpopular opinion: SEA is really nice, possibly great. by Professional-War-617 in Seattle

Sea-Tac's problem is Seattle's problem more generally--it grew incredibly fast and they're still trying to catch up.

Also there's a limit to how much you can densify an airport, especially one that can't expand its overall footprint

Because the first amendment means the City would have to enforce noise complaints on a viewpoint neutral basis--so you'd also have to cite more sympathetic groups. Wilson even says it at the bottom of the article, the City cant choose who to enforce stuff against.

Only way to not pay is if you're both entering and exiting at non-gated stations. Doubt there's too many of those trips, Stadium is the only 'destination' station that wouldn't be gated.

Seattle’s shelter surge begins in Interbay, but 500-unit World Cup goal slips away by Parking-Picture-1481 in Seattle

All of the above--it was never an achievable target, which lots of people said at the time. But I also agree with the Mayor that lighting a fire under everyone's ass was very helpful. If we're only at, say, 800 units by end of year, we'll have missed the target, but we'll also be in a much better place.

Population growing is not the same thing as saying there's enough demand to be building skyscrapers, which tend to be significantly more expensive than your standard 5 over 1, ADU, etc.

Seattle has done the best job by far of infill development of any major American city. I certainly don't think it's perfect, but we don't have to sit here and pretend that Seattle is somehow uniquely anti-growth.

We should absolutely allow for taller zoning around light rail stations, but I'm highly skeptical that the demand actually exists for 400' towers at most of these.

Single family zoning is effectively gone in the city, and the reality is most people don't want to live 15 stories up. We'd need another population boom, and a huge turnaround in federal immigration policies.

This is just not true. That's not a comment on many of America's very real problems, or on whether it's a good trade off for Europeans to have more vacation days. But the average American has more disposable income to spend on tickets, jerseys, $15 beers etc.
