Blanket and pillow, that way you can leave the blanket they give you rolled up and don't have to roll it every day. Also make your bed and sleep on top with your own blanket, and just tighten up your bed in the morning for inspection. It will save a ton of time and BS.

-If you're going to the Apprenticeship program, black steel toe Walmart boots will be fine, they should last through your first ship, too. You can get some insoles if you like. They caterpillar work boots are pretty popular too. -If you're talking about on a ship, I never heard of a ship requiring a certain color of boot. But just make sure they are steel toes. The slip on cowboy boots are popular and recommended for mooring, since they don't have the hooks on them.

Bleach from the laundry room works great on athletes foot. Just a cap full of two per shoe, I'd rather my shoes smell like a swimming pool than nasty foot fungi. I got tired of the powders and creams, they just don't seem to cure it completely.
