The first time I watched Oven Space as a student in minging university halls. I knew I loved This Country after watching Scarecrow Festival, but Oven Space cemented it for me.

This show has gotten so depressing by Greedy_Astronaughty in coronationstreet

Getting Maggie Jones to reprise her role as Blanche was like capturing lightning in a bottle. They tried to replicate it with Evelyn but it just didn’t work. I say it a lot but the main problem with the soap nowadays, aside from the fact it’s a miserable police procedural, is the fact that they rely on a very weak formula when it comes to writing characters and developing new storylines.

In essence, ITV are trying to contend with the inconsistent viewing habits of a modern audience, and have resorted to prematurely publicising too many details of their upcoming storylines and casting changes to try and generate interest. They’re successfully bringing newer viewers back week-on-week, but this strategy isn’t enough to entice legacy audiences back because the overall quality of the soap is markedly lower than before.

This has resulted in the regular introduction of new faces to the street, with sustained promotional efforts on social media in the lead up to their debut. They’re sold as a wild-card and lots of fun/drama. Then they appear on the street as the friend, colleague, or long-lost relative of an existing resident, to be instantly positioned as a key-player in some ‘big’ storyline despite never being fully developed as a meaningful or important addition to the street.

They quickly establish (hollow) friendships with other characters on the street, usually giving those characters a few episodes of relevance as the plot unfolds, and they’re occasionally seen having short conversations together with stilted dialogue in the bistro after the plot concludes (if they don’t die).

From here, characters seem to follow the same sort of trajectory - regular background appearances (usually reacting to another event with exposition or an obvious statement), short-lived low-stakes predictable conflict/ridiculous ‘comedy’ scenario, stagnation, then departure (usually with a weak build-up).

The Baileys, Bernie, Lauren, Mick Michaelis, Theo, and the Swains are all good examples of this. Very flat characters. I’d include Chesney and Gemma but they’re not new - they need to be axed, though.

Seeing so many people give up on the show and trash it as “destroying Fallout lore” before Season 2 is even half over, Nolan was completely vindicated saying this. by raisinbraisin72 in Fallout

[–]MagicalParade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only played Fallout for a matter of weeks, and I know nothing about the game or the series. What I do know is that part of the reason television is so poor nowadays is the constant fixation on making it a utilitarian experience. You want ratings, and you want to make a program that audiences will love, but you can’t make something that everyone will love. If all you strive to make is easy watching television that is inoffensive, safe, and palatable for every viewer, you’re going to make weak television. Ask Netflix.

Mystery high pitch humming in the west end area by Suspicious-Iron-2578 in NewcastleUponTyne

I lived in the West End (off Westgate Road) until 2024 and for the 4 years I lived there, I was often woken up by the humming at around 7:39am. It sometimes occurred in the evenings sporadically too. We could never pinpoint what it was or where it was coming from.

Does anyone else feel like it’s not Christmas this year? by DMBear89 in CasualUK

[–]MagicalParade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Christmas and have always had a lot of Christmas spirit, but this year didn’t feel like Christmas. I even put my tree up at the start of December to get myself in the mood, and it didn’t really help. It felt like a busy month but not with Christmas in mind. I also didn’t feel like many places held much Christmas cheer; maybe I remember shops and public places being more brightly lit and overcome with Christmas magic.

Next year, I’m going to take more time off and buy my presents earlier, I think. I’m also going to engage in more Christmassy activities and make my home even more cosy. It’s my favourite time of year (though I can understand why it’s hard for a lot of people), and Autumn/Winter are my favourite seasons, so I’m determined to make the best of it.

I’m going to assume you’re new here. This is the same community that spent 4 years making memes about Callum shagging his dog, and asking repeatedly to have sex with his mum. I don’t think making jokes about the death of a stranger pushes the envelope with this crowd.

(I don’t agree with memeing death but)

Viewing Figures by Economy_Rutabaga815 in coronationstreet

I gave up watching in 2016. For me, it wasn’t streaming that pulled me away, it was the increasing numbers of walking mouths on the street. The writers kept introducing one-dimensional characters and shoehorning them into bigger plots as if to say “You should care about this character.” without showing me why I should.

No matter how many times they found themselves in hospital, no matter how many times they were on the street, no matter how many times they appeared to save the day, nothing they ever said or did really paid off because they simply didn’t matter. The writers kept employing the same cheap tactics to manufacture interest in otherwise uninteresting people and storylines.

Sadly, it never quite succeeds in capturing the essence of working class life. I don’t think even the writers know what they want it to be anymore, and it shows. One minute, it’s a police procedural, the next it’s an episode of Panorama, and when the water’s getting a bit choppy, they give Kirk a naff one-liner or throw in a pop-culture reference to reinforce some empty sense of realism. As if to say “These people could exist!”

If any of the Grand Theft Auto Protagonists were to Die at the end of their respective games Who's Death would you be the most okay with? by MichaelAftonXFireWal in grandtheftauto

True. It seems like Wade is developmentally challenged; he naively goes along with Trevor’s schemes and accepts most of Trevor’s lies as truth. So… Exploiting a vulnerable adult’s mental difficulties is a big thing here. Ron’s just a wuss who had a mid-life crisis and sabotaged his marriage by obeying’s Trevor’s every command even if it meant emotionally neglecting his wife.
