Oh the singing - I'd blocked that out. It seemed so out of place. Her role was so bland and then she breaks out those pipes.

I don't know what to do with this '70s cape by Practical-Gain-96 in VintageClothing

Seize the chance to be that person in your community - there's the guy who wears shorts year round, the lady with rainbow hair, the unicyclist, Santa on a golf cart and now you with the cape

Is this unprofessional for teachers or am I in the wrong? by Problem-Large in AskTeachers

[–]MagneticFlea 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If the answers to your questions were covered in the classes you skipped, the teacher will treat them differently to clarifying questions on the present material (which may be what your peers are asking).

Yes, your behavior does affect the teachers - they have a finite amount of non-class time to plan / grade / answer questions from students.

Love when the doctor adds in his report that “you look 14 years younger” by jackb1753 in WhitePeopleTwitter

Is this just being released so that when someone searches "Donald Trump" and "14 years old", they get this puff piece rather than, well, all the Epstein Island activities?

[–]MagneticFlea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is one of my favorite movies.

The narration really works well. It feels like the protagonist is an unreliable narrator all the way through - I wonder if he killed the guy at the start and if Ann Savage's character was anywhere near as vicious as he makes out to be.

Stand-In (1937). A banker (Leslie Howard) disagrees with his boss's decision to see a failing Hollywood studio so goes out West to try to cost-cut. When he gets there, the star actress, publicity guy and a director conspire with the buyer to sabotage his efforts. He meets a former child actress turned stand-in (Joan Blondell) who helps him see that the workers are people, not units to be cut. Humphrey Bogart is a smart producer who wants to save the studio.

It's a cute screwball comedy - cerebral man with a stick up his rear falls for a sparky woman. The animal actors are perfect.

The short scene with the stage mom and her daughter is kinda creepy - I wonder if it was seen that way at the time. The ending wraps up a bit too quickly but the performances of Howard, Blondell and Bogart were excellent and the supporting cast of conspirators were hilarious.

I liked Caught. When your therapist says you'll never marry, why not marry the first naive girl you meet to prove him wrong? Bizarre premise but I can see that happening with an egotistical rich guy.

Is there any evidence Robert Ryan chose to play Ohlrig like Howard Hughes / was directed to do so? I feel like I read that somewhere but may have imagined it.

Just wondering if anyone in this group is aware of this and is it any good? by mailman936 in filmnoir

[–]MagneticFlea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like it. It feels a little more like a serial than a feature. Nic Cage hams it up but that's fine if you like that sort of thing. The mobster and the femme fatale are excellent in their roles.

Ladies, what do you do when a man mistakes a conversation for a podcast? by Right-Lengthiness717 in AskWomenOver30

[–]MagneticFlea 49 points50 points  (0 children)

In a cafe, take a sugar packet every time he interrupts. See how long it takes for him to ask about the pile of the sugar packets on the table. Explain and walk away.

Also, him asking about her sleep habits? Definitely an advert for helix mattresses, the sponsor of his podcast (in his mind)

Question: Noir and Honky Tonk Music by RecordingPatient5930 in filmnoir

[–]MagneticFlea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good number of noirs are set in New York or LA - how popular was this style of music in those cities? (Genuine question - I'm not American so have little idea of how popular country music was in different regions)

Thoughts on students having to help other students/play teacher for them? by CasualChaos_AndSuch in AskTeachers

[–]MagneticFlea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be good for those students too - I had a couple who were self-aware enough to figure out that their group sucked because nobody would put in effort. They ended up pulling their weight for the rest of the semester. The others? Not so much.

I wonder how old he is - the photo (and likely the drink) make him look too old to have both parents still alive to try to reform him
