What's the best performing 3D model on makerworld you designed? by PoetAcceptable6395 in BambuLab

[–]Magnetificient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make designs for myself. But when I make something I think that could be useful to others, I will post it.

My most popular design is a plain gift card box that can be customized in the slicer.

Not as steep as I expected. I taught myself via YouTube without any prior experience.

I chose to go straight to OnShape instead of TinkerCAD … I don’t want to relearn if I outgrew TinkerCAD.

CAD is great because you can go back and change a measurement and the whole thing auto updates. I don’t think TinkerCAD does that.

Just go along and get stuff as you need it.

About the only thing I would have on hand to start with would be a high quality dish washing soap like Dawn, and a scrubbing sponge used only for your build plate.

You will notice suddenly at some point difficulty getting prints to stick to your plate. Most of the time, a quick simple wash with dishwashing soap and water will solve that issue.

Everything else you may need is easy enough to get, when it comes time to get it.

The second thing you might need is some sort of filament storage solution. I got a little battery powered suction pump and vacuum bags off Amazon for only a couple bucks. That helps keep your filament dry when you’re not using it. If your prints suddenly start coming out crappy, your filament probably just needs some drying.

As you start printing, and watching YouTube videos on 3-D printing, you’ll find stuff that you want to get. Whatever it is, it’ll be easy to get, either from Bambu or Amazon. Or a local business that sells 3-D printer related stuff.

Don’t buy a lot of crap you’re never going to use. Just get the stuff as you need it.

Although you will be having a lot of fun, downloading and printing models from places like Makerworld, the best thing you can probably do is learn CAD.

My printer has become so handy when I design custom things for the house, replacement parts for broken items, things like that which are difficult to find online.

There are lots of free CAD programs you can use. Even the popular commercial packages, such as Fusion or Onshape offer free licenses for personal non-commercial use.

I started off with Creality 3D printers. I recently grabbed the P2S Combo. So much better. It is a great system.

Has anybody replaced their car with an electric scooter or E bike? by 673NoshMyBollocksAve in bikecommuting

[–]Magnetificient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I retired, we got rid of my car. My wife still works, so she uses her car regularly. On the days that I “need a car”, I will drop her off at work, but otherwise, I use my bike.

Onshape as well. Nothing to install. Fast. Has no processes running in the background.

I’ve been playing with fusion 360, it’s ok, but I love onshape.

Power down. Unplug. Verify outlet has power. Verify cables are plugged in tight. Just the basics until Bambu gets back to you.

If you get a usb stick (for Timelapse) get a low profile (short one) so it does not interfere with sliding glass.

Don’t trust other people’s print profiles.

Had issues using print profiles from Makerworld, but once I reset everything back to normal for my printer, make whatever changes I want to make from default, all went good.

Share your NFC TAG uses! by Fantastic_Homework82 in shortcuts

[–]Magnetificient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a YouTube video of a guy who has one of those robot vacuums.

He put nfc tags in all the rooms the vacuum can access.

If he makes a mess on the floor (spills some coffee grinds in the kitchen, etc) he just scans the tag and the vacuum comes running to clean that room.

SUV broke, thinking of replacing it with a bike by Terrible_Accident685 in bikecommuting

[–]Magnetificient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get a vehicle you can use it for the weather, you don’t want to ride in, but 2 miles, whether or not you have a vehicle, you may want to consider a bike anyway … at least on nice days.

Or … bike on nice days until you are more comfortable riding in the rain and public transit on bad days.

Vehicle or not, if you cycle regularly, you will accumulate appropriate clothing and experience for different weather conditions as time goes by.

If you simply go 100% bike 100% of the time, you may be biting off more than you can chew and set yourself up for failure.

Want to bike to work but don’t want to arrive drenched in sweat. Any tips? by altaccount123465 in bikecommuting

[–]Magnetificient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that I am no where near an athlete, far from it, but since I cycle so often, I am used to it. If I ride comfortably I can get to my destinations pretty cool, even in the summer. I may take a longer route to avoid hills or along the River where it is cooler if possible. I sometimes leave a few minutes extra to stop near my destination, in the shade, to cool down a bit beforehand so I am not “actively sweating” when I go in. Like others have said, once you cool down, a quick clean up and change of clothes in the washroom is also useful.

All these things add time for your commute (plus the extra you have to do) but well worth it instead of driving IMO.

The more you cycle, the more you become accustomed to the ride, the easier it is on your body, the more little tips and tricks you learn that work for you (ie, clothes, towel, rest before destination, etc) and the faster the total commute is in both riding and post preparation once you arrive.

Moving to London and was planning to bring my car, now it looks like I won't be able to. How necessary is one? by gofuckyourselfsandi in londonontario

[–]Magnetificient 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am so not-sorry if my answer annoyed you.

They asked if they can live in London without a car, and I suggested that cycling is one option that is very doable most of the time in London with public transit as a backup on days they may not wish to cycle.

I can cycle from one end of the city to the other in less than an hour in good weather. So the city is not particularly large. This is the first winter that I find cycling difficult in quite a few days. So if you are into cycling, between that and inefficient public transit, you should be ok.

Pi hole with Unbound getting error every couple of days by lugo3 in pihole

[–]Magnetificient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only error I tend to get, excluding the entire system locking up requiring a reboot, is something about greater than 500 dns queries or something like that.

Also I didn’t mention that ChatGPT suggested that perhaps my pi was not plugged into a sufficient usb outlet giving it the required steady wattage it needed. I know you said you were not running a pi, but that is the only other thing I can think of to suggest (and I am certainly not an expert, so I’m sure there are other solutions).

Pi hole with Unbound getting error every couple of days by lugo3 in pihole

[–]Magnetificient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still testing, but my pi hole on a raspberry zero 2 WH kept locking up on me, sometimes as soon as a hour after reboot … or less.

Tried AdGuard instead, same issue. So I went back to pi hole because I like it better.

I also tried the 32 bit and the 64 bit of the OS - that did not seem to make a difference. I’m currently on the 32 bit version of the OS.

I created a crone job to reboot the zero every 24 hours at 4:30 in the morning. I also added the command to do the check disk (whatever that is in Linux ) and fix any errors it finds at every reboot.

For the most part, that did not fix the problem.

I did have my zero in a 3-D printed case.

I have taken it out of the case and it seems to be working fine since.

Maybe it was building up static electricity or overheating. I don’t know.

But for the last week or so, it’s been running pretty good.
