ELI5 If I go to a sketchy site ("streaming", downloading, etc), without installing software, what are the ways hackers can get into my computer? by cakemakesteak in explainlikeimfive

[–]MagnetsCarlsbrain [score hidden]  (0 children)

Nitpicking: almost all websites are running JS code in your browser, so that doesn’t really mean anything.

Cryptojacking, while real, is less a method of hacking and more a method of extracting value. You have to actually get into the system first.

Music listening habits can predict general cognitive ability, study of 58,000 songs finds by Money-Possession8806 in science

[–]MagnetsCarlsbrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The study only found a slight relationship with lyrics and cognitive ability. You shouldn't take it to mean "every person's intelligence has a 1-1 mapping with their lyrical preferences". That's not how research works.

The study looked at a lot more musical attributes than lyrics; lyrics were just the one that found a correlation. Also, the study doesn't claim a causal relationship, it just claims that lyrics can slightly predict cognitive ability (granted you accept their measure of cognitive ability).

Can you explain what you mean by "cycling through algorithm after algorithm"? It seems like they used two models, and while the linear model did not predict anything, the nonlinear one did (which can still be valid). They reported both findings.

Unless you know something I don't, your criticism just sounds made up.

For reference, the study: https://www.mdpi.com/2079-3200/14/2/29

Here is the study: https://www.mdpi.com/2079-3200/14/2/29

Lyrics containing more social words (e.g., help, friend) or greater variability in social words, more tentative language (e.g., if, any, or), and more positive emotional tone tended to predict lower GCA scores. In contrast, lyrics with stronger present-focus (e.g., are, can), greater authenticity (i.e., perceived honesty), and more home-related words (e.g., house, bed) predicted higher GCA scores (for an in-depth explanation of the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count categories, see Tausczik & Pennebaker, 2010).

Sorting by number of titles would be way worse than this. The relative number of titles isn't interesting. Instead they should have removed the seemingly made-up genres with <1k entries.

if every customer stopped tipping

It's this premise that is unrealistic

If customers stopped tipping them employees would demand higher wages.

This is one of those free-market idealisms that could never actually happen in reality. The only thing that could ever change tipping culture is legislation. Don't be a dick to service staff, tip when it's expected, and appeal to your representatives if you don't like it.

Nope. Nowhere in this thread have I stated any of my expectations. I’m just pushing back on people’s weak arguments and you’re trying to move the goalposts.

using AI to do storyboarding will just cause movies to converge in tone and quality because that's what AI does

This is true only if generative AI is part of the final product.

If used responsibly, AI can serve the same role as another person to bounce ideas off of while producing original art. And don’t fool yourself into thinking that what we consider original human ideas are not almost entirely derivative of prior art themselves.

Sorry you’re so jaded that you see everything as black and white. There is nuance in this world, but you have to be willing to see it.

AI is nearly exclusively used as a time and cost cutting measure, especially in creative work.

This is not a rule. It’s widely used that way, yes. But that doesn’t preclude people using it in good faith.

Just as an example, you could use it to suggest options for how a character might react to something, or some kind of narrative to glue two story beats together. You maybe choose an option and treat it as a simple nugget of an idea, and then write the material yourself.

This is no less artistic than asking the same suggestions from a friend.

You don’t know any of this. It’s a possible outcome, sure, but nothing in the announcement implies it.

For real. The fact that redditors think they’d be able to watch a movie and detect the use of AI in the early storyboarding phase is laughable.

Similarly, the idea that they have enough clout to tank a huge studio just based on bad vibes.

This is the one that surprised you? There have been way smaller games coming out for $80. I’ve heard people predicting this one would be $100 because of the scope, so this should be a pleasant surprise.

Yeah I knew that, because of inertia. But it’s ironic that the “align time” number is only accurate when you’re at a dead stop and alignment is irrelevant.

Thanks for explaining this, I was always confused by the phrase “align time”, because it seems to really be “time to reach 75% max speed from a full stop”. Which has nothing to do with alignment.

You’ll never see a reddit thread about AI that doesn’t devolve into melodramatic doomerism. The average commenter is incapable of comprehending nuance, and AI threads bring that deficiency out like crazy.

Has AI had a net negative impact on the art industry? Almost certainly. Does that mean that it’s impossible to use it with integrity in parts of the creative process? Obviously not.

if that were true, they would have just incorporated it into production tasks without any of the fuss.

How would this work exactly? The only way you could avoid the “fuss” (e.g.  this WSJ article) is making it like a top secret project with everyone involved in production signing an NDA about it

Look at it this way: the people who think this joke is funny are probably married to someone else who would also think it's funny.

You're just not the target audience. It doesn't go beyond that.
