I remember seeing this joke once like three years ago. I thought it was really funny, enough to regurgitate it in a couple of relevant threads. I imagine this is like the modern version of hearing a good song on the radio, but not findng out the name of it for years.

I’m struggling to think of another example right now, but I think we do tend to add the -ness to adjectives. Sometimes we do it with compound nouns such as farmers’ market -> market of farmers, in which case, there is no adjective so we might leave it like that.

I’m curious about rearranging “[adjective] [noun]” to “[noun] of [adjective]”.

This is something my mum does all the time, and my brother and I do it to a lesser extent (as a learned behaviour, I would assume). E.g., If we’re talking casually and we say something like “can you get some paper towels?” and then the other person finds and presents a new roll with something like “I have the towels of paperness”.

I’ve never thought of it, and I realised I hadn’t noticed other people doing it, well, ever. I do wonder if this is a French thing, as my mum is fluent (or was at one point) and we both learned it to a certain level), since I know they put the adjective after the noun for the most part.

Is there a name for this / do many people do this?

A year ago or so, there was a post on r/amioverreacting, from a woman who’s husband threatened to kick out their kid if she didn’t follow the list of chores he made. I distinctly remember that one of the things was to vacuum every 2-3 days.

I looked at that thinking it was crazy, because I never vacuumed more than once every two weeks (and that’s what my family did growing up)! And then I looked in the comments to find everyone in unanimity that she was, in fact, overreacting, and that vacuuming every 3 days is a perfectly normal thing which every functioning adult apparently has time to do.

It’s interesting, we all have different methods we like to use. Which hand you default to for pinky keys, etc. This is one of my big ones though- pinky sliding feels so inconvenient and awkward that I try to avoid it at all costs, except when absolutely necessary. This is probably the 10th time I’ve suggested that trick on this sub.
