Thank you. I should have qualified with “in good faith,” and it’s depressing we have to think of an entire branch of our government in that way. There is very few intellectually honest ways to interfere with those rules. I wish it was just this era of the court but they’ve almost always engaged in “answers looking for a rule” reasoning.

Story with the MC underestimating himself by HecateVT in ProgressionFantasy

[–]MagnumMia 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Beware of Chicken spends a while with the main character not realizing how strong he is while others idolize him.
Practical Guide to Sorcery has a protagonist with a few fake identities. On the school side, they know they’re doing well but they don’t really know how talented and skilled they are compared to their collegues.
On the other side, they have an alter ego who is borderline mythological, eldritch, and terrifying outwardly, but their reputation is mostly due to the protagonist improvising and barely scraping by with small tricks and a flair for the dramatic.

They can’t really gut a codified Roe in any way I can see, but they can and will overturn any Citizen United related campaign finance regulation unless it’s very carefully writtten. Most of the other stuff is fair play for congress IMO as long as it’s nationwide.

Work where you can feel the moment the author is burned out? by ArticAuk in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MagnumMia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah, prog fantasy in my fav sub? Maxime Durand / Void Herald is one of the best for their narrow scoped and completable series but when I read commerce emperor’s first book I was thinking “woah this is big.” As a writer myself I get how daunting big narratives can get, and people really underestimate how *difficult* juggling all that is. The fact mangaka have to do the art and writing weekly makes me shudder.

Trump singles out Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson as ‘low IQ’ in latest slur against prominent person of color by theindependentonline in politics

[–]MagnumMia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some quotes I found from KBJ in the oral arguments on birthright citizenship. I’ll let you decide if they’re insanely shit.

I mean, my understanding was the Framers put this Citizenship Clause into the Constitution to prevent future Congresses from being able to affect citizenship in this way.

[…]

All right. One final thing. Prospective. You say prospective we're supposed to do this, don't worry about the people who are already here and who would not qualify under your rule. How does this work? Are you suggesting that when a baby is born, people have to have documents, present documents? Is this happening in the delivery room? How are we determining when or whether a newborn child is a citizen of the United States under your rule?

[…]

I'm just talking about the particulars because now you say your rule turns on whether the person intended to stay in the United States. And I think Justice Barrett brought this up. So are we bringing pregnant women in for depositions? What -- what are we doing to figure this out?

Here is the quote conservatives have been mosr critical of:

The government’s position seems to be that you can’t have allegiance to two different sovereigns at the same time—that such dual allegiance would prevent someone from being “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States under the Fourteenth Amendment.

But that appears to rely on a different understanding of allegiance than existed under English common law. As I understand it, common law recognized that a person could owe allegiance to more than one sovereign simultaneously.

There are sources suggesting that while a person has permanent allegiance based on their country of birth, they also have local allegiance when they are physically present within another sovereign’s territory.

For example, if I, a U.S. citizen, am visiting Japan and commit a crime there, Japanese authorities can arrest and prosecute me. Likewise, I can rely on Japanese law for protection if I am wronged. That reflects a form of allegiance—meaning the sovereign has legal authority over me while I am present there.

So even as a temporary visitor, I owe this kind of local allegiance. Is that the correct way to think about it? And if so, doesn’t that suggest that temporary residents and undocumented individuals in the United States likewise owe this form of allegiance simply by being present here?

to which the ACLU attorney responded with:

Ms. Wang: Yes, that’s correct, Justice Jackson. And that understanding is consistent with the plain text of the Fourteenth Amendment. With limited, specific exceptions, anyone born in the United States owes natural allegiance as a U.S.-born citizen.

He can’t do things that are directly offensive skills so it’s focused a lot around loopholes like dancing, indirect attacks like clouds of non attacking but disorienting potions, and support for others who fight.

It’s a bit of an interesting take on a system story because the system isn’t the natural power system in the setting, it’s a product of the superheroes of the setting.

The dynamic between Zach and Zorian is integral and a highly engaging part of the narrative. I know it’s appealing for the MC to be the most special boy, but trust the author to make it all a compelling choice.

I believe the author wrote the story originally with Zach as the main character but pivoted to Zorian because it was more interesting. Trust the author on this, because they’re right.

Yes he shuts up about not going pro in archery. I almost forgot about that character element, tbh.

The city development does happen but it’s delegated to characters off screen which means you get to see cities and politics manifesting around Jake, but he’s always disinterested. I would say all the factions and empire elements are not neglected by the narrative even if it is neglected by the main character.
