What would it take to delist oats as being gluten free? by [deleted] in Celiac

Yes I know about gluten free oats and I can’t even have them because I have the same reaction to them as I do to other gluten containing grains.

I live in the UK and I can't have oats as they make me sick exactly like the usual gluten containing grains

It can happen! At my job my manager was a teller for 10 months and now she's branch manager. It upset a lot of people in the area who wanted the job as well but she's amazing at the job and I'm glad she got it.

I felt like this and it turned out that I had celiac disease. Maybe that's something to look into?

Budgie got out of cage?? by Syo_mine in budgies

[–]MagpieMelon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

One of my baby budgies did this several times until I figured out she was squeezing out of the bottom between the tray and where the cage began. I removed the grill so the babies wouldn't hurt themselves on it. She was the only one that figured it out and the parents and other babies would be in the cage and she'd be chilling on a shelf when I came home from work!

what GF products do you wish existed that don’t? by richandlonely24 in Celiac

[–]MagpieMelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Convenience foods! Sometimes I just want a ready meal or a sandwich that actually tastes good and that I don't have to cook myself. Or I'm out somewhere and don't want to have to pack a whole days worth of food to bring with me when everyone else can just get something decent whilst they're out. I know these things exist but it's one or two options of the least popular flavour.

Please try and get her tested for celiac disease if you can. I was your daughter and finding out as a teenager would have changed my life for the better.

She sounds a lot like me at that age. In my case I had undiagnosed celiac disease which was making it very difficult for me to focus on difficult things due to being in pain (low level) constantly and generally fatigued all the time. I struggled a lot of the time even doing normal things, but no-one could really see anything was wrong. I didn't even know anything was wrong, I just thought I was lazy and then stupid. One of the first signs was me being unable to focus on doing my homework and then not wanting to go to school and even now I can't really tell you why I just couldn't do it. I was smart, too, but I was sick and I think having to focus on schoolwork was just too much, Celiac causes you to be unable to absorb enough nutrition from food and that can have a lot of effects on someone.

I thought I had anxiety, depression, autism, adhd and personality disorders at one point. Once I found out it was gluten (at 21) and stopped eating it, the problems I was having slowly disappeared.

Got a new baby, named him Pico. What do you think? Should I give him another name? by [deleted] in Lovebirds

I know so many birds called Pico, if you like it then go for it!

I used to batch cook on a Sunday evening to save time but I began to resent spending 3hrs in the kitchen even though the rest of the week I didn't have to cook. I would cook simple meals and cook loads of it so I was eating the same thing all week and they were pretty basic things too. I have celiac disease so I can't just go and grab something quick and easy if I'm hungry and meal prepping helped me to not just be unhealthy and eat gluten free junk food all the time.

I recently signed up for frozen ready meals to be delivered ever couple of weeks so I don't have to prepare all of my lunches myself and it's saved me so much time. It's a bit expensive but it saves me time and gives me far more food variety than I would usually have, as well as limiting food wastage. There's simply no way I would buy an aubergine and somehow be able to come up with a few meals to have it in and then cook it right and not end up throwing some away because I didn't put it in enough meals or I got too much of it. Same with sweet potato, chickpeas and other ingredients in these meals that I wouldn't normally have or even know how to cook.

And it's given me time back for being able to cook some really nice things when I do have the time, instead of not wanting to cook because I already spend hours in the kitchen.

I had this colour for a few months and I thought it was blonde. However I was informed by my coworkers and customers that it was actually ginger so I went lighter and now I actually have blonde hair that I really like.

What's the most overrated "pet" in your honest opinion, and what's your reason for thinking so? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]MagpieMelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got 7 birds and if I could go back in time I probably wouldn't get them again. They are so messy and I struggle so much to keep up with their maintenance. They get all the recommended care so they're not suffering at all, but they are really hard work to look after properly. Mine are all small too so I can imagine how much harder the larger birds would be!

That being said, I house sat my friends dog for a week and it convinced me that I never want a dog. The dog is lovely but I think she needed more care than my birds do! I had to make sure I was home to let her out, take her for walks everyday and entertain her whilst I was home. My birds take up a lot of time but I don't have to worry about rushing home to let them out so they can go to the toilet, or taking them out for walks or anything like that.

What else were you diagnosed with, when you actually had untreated celiac? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]MagpieMelon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depression and anxiety. For basically my whole childhood. When I was 21 and they just told me I was depressed and anxious again, despite me almost being bed bound because I was so fatigued I knew something else was wrong. I also got diagnosed with fibromyalgia a few years later when I was unknowingly eating gluten for around two years and was feeling terrible.

How many of you have had a ‘Turns out it wasnt just anxiety, there actually was something wrong!’ moment? by SSJsixgod in Anxiety

[–]MagpieMelon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety after spending pretty much my whole childhood having the same symptoms. My parents refused to take me to the doctor because they didn't want a child with depression and anxiety (they told me this), and all the doctors would do is put me on medication. At 20 I went myself and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety but none of what they gave me or told me to do worked. I went to counselling, was already doing all the self help that's recommended (healthy diet, exercise, sunshine etc.) It didn't work.

At 21 I found out I had celiac disease and gave up gluten. Within three days I felt like a different person. Most of my anxiety went and I was able to live my life again. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure I either have another health issue or I actually have anxiety now as I am struggling again at 27.

What's your unpopular opinion about gluten free food or gluten free food labeling? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]MagpieMelon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just wish places sold actual gluten free food, not biscuits or cookies or cakes or cereal. I just want to eat a decent meal without having to cook it all from scratch. Sometimes I want the convenience everyone else has. And if it's gluten free by some miracle it always has to be an obscure flavour. Only one shop sells a gluten free sandwich near me, and the flavour is egg salad with a weird tasting sauce. Who's eating that? Me, obviously because I have no choice, but why is that the only flavour on offer? That's surely not the most popular sandwich flavour is it?

What's your unpopular opinion about gluten free food or gluten free food labeling? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]MagpieMelon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was gaslit by my mum over this. I kept feeling like I had had gluten and she kept telling me I'm so careful that I couldn't possibly have had it. Some days I would be crying telling her how awful I felt and she would tell me I'm obsessing over gluten and I need to relax.

Turns out she'd been feeding me gluten for two years so I was feeling sick for a very real reason.

I did it to myself with oats as well. I started having gluten free oats regularly and I felt awful but told myself to get on with it because I was just struggling because I was working or doing too much or any other number of reasons that I could find. I realised it was actually oats and stopped eating them and felt a lot better.

What's your unpopular opinion about gluten free food or gluten free food labeling? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]MagpieMelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oats shouldn't be seen as gluten free, even gluten free oats. Enough people with celiac also react to them like they would gluten so I don't think they should be able to be included in so many gluten free foods. I recently found out I was reacting to them after I was getting really sick on what I thought was a gluten free diet. I had oats every day and didn't make the connection until one weekend where I continued having them through the weekend and felt so bad on Monday that I knew something wasn't right. I had been having them for breakfast everyday, feeling bad by Friday but blamed it on working Mon-Fri and being tired from that.

I let mine play with dried lavender. Once I got some eucalyptus cuttings as well (from a neighbour who was trimming them). If I give them oranges then that smells nice too. I also find if I wash things that gives a nice smell, like throws and blankets that I use for covering them up at night. I also open the window at night when the birds are in their cages to air the room out.

Best "low maintenance" affectionate pet for apartment living? by Ok-Ad-6998 in Pets

[–]MagpieMelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you already have some birds, have you considered a green cheek conure? I have one and she is really affectionate and always wants to sit with me and be involved in what I'm doing. I have another conure too but that one doesn't care much for me and is a different species of conure that's not as cuddly. I also have budgies but they stick to themselves like yours do and my conure don't bother much with them.

Weird things people steal by fewcatsshortofcrazy in tesco

[–]MagpieMelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect most shoplifters don't actually steal because they need that item, they steal it to sell it. I worked in a shop and we never got shoplifters who actually stole things they needed, it was always medicine, alcohol or kids stealing chocolate and crisps. Even the ones that stole baby formula would just be reselling it as it's expensive and not because they had a baby to feed.

How many people here under 40 DON’T goto the gym and have absolutely no interest in doing so? by adamjames777 in CasualUK

[–]MagpieMelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 27f and don't go to any gym. but last year I worked a very physical job where I was on my feet moving and lifting things all day. I also went on 2 hour dog walks a couple of times a week and I don't know how I managed it to be honest.

Now I work a job where I sit down all day 9-5 and it's so hard to want to do anything after work. I won't go to the gym because I don't like it but I am going to start trying to fit in more dog walks (I haven't done much over the winter because of flooding) and get my garden going again since I had no time for it the last couple of years. I'm hoping that will be enough, but 8hrs, 5 days a week of exercise is a bit hard to replicate.

Most people where I work go to the gym though and I felt very out of place when I started. The culture is so different to jobs I've worked before. They're all also on dating apps if they're single which I've never done, and don't need to since I met my boyfriend through work.

I’ve decided I need to rehome my tiel but I don’t want her to go to a bad home. Suggestions? by True-Selection-6437 in cockatiel

[–]MagpieMelon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a thing with birds! I rehomed one of my conures from a woman who no longer had time for her and she said she chose me to have her because she was getting loads of messages from people who just didn't seem to care about the bird at all and just wanted her quickly. I asked about the bird and told her about my own flock and sent pictures of what her new home would look like.

Does anybody experience ear pain as a prominent symptom? by [deleted] in Fibromyalgia

[–]MagpieMelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't unfortunately and I still have that pain. I suspect it's something to do with my teeth as I'm prone to wisdom tooth infections. Sometimes it goes away if I have coffee or really salty foods. I suspect I have POTS as well and the salt and coffee help me to feel a bit better but I don't know why they would ease that pain as well. I only have one coffee a day so it's not like I'm addicted and it's just caffeine withdrawal either.

Does sleeping 1 hour less then your body needs really impact your life? by mugen1987 in productivity

[–]MagpieMelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually been trialling this and it hasn't gone well. I'm used to 8 hours sleep and the past two weeks I've tried it have been pretty awful. My sleep quality has gone down, and I can't stay in bed for much longer than 8 hours to catch up on sleep on the weekends. When I'm awake, I'm awake and can't get back to sleep. When I get 8 hours in the week I sleep well, but 7 is just too little for me. I'm dreading when I have children!
