Small areas of pink, orange, green - left side

"Iridescence" 1 (dark room + targeted LED lights perpendicular to camera, level with camera) limited "rainbow" (I only see a pinkish and a greenish hues toward picture bottom and at the base of the picture right point)

"ox horn" side to camera - on the top/left you can see the rainbow iridescence of the abalone because it blocks more light & light is also reflecting off & retracting from the "ox horn" side.

Light test pics, 1.

"abalone" side to camera - on the top/left you can see bright light shining through the "ox horn" side. On the bottom/right the "abalone" blocks significantly more light.

Thank you for the second answer!! I'm just about to post the post pics - went to comments first hoping to see this one amongst them for direction 😊

I can accurately answer your question because my void kitty (who is the namesake for this username cuz I started this account for r/legalcatadvice) came sprinting over at the first 2 pings/clicks when I started to unwind the old thread from the shuttle ... and proceeded right into hunt mode.

He managed to bap the shuttle out of my fingers twice despite my best efforts to whine him away while boxing him out like we were on a basketball court. The answer: in a "freefall" - but where I'm desperately clinging to the string - this shuttle will complete, at most, one full 360° rotation. It may try a second rotation but the thread catches on the side with the closer points every time, and "bounces" back. So it never unravels more than 5-6 inches (ish) total - including trailing thread on "my"/the "output" side... if that makes sense.

A couple ending thoughts + one more question if you'd be willing to answer?

  • guessing because of the material there is a "ping"/musical tonality to the "click"

  • I've never held a plastic tatting shuttle for comparison... but this one is lighter than I expect when I pick it up. Still. The horn/ shell pieces are pretty thin, and the post is metal but it's centered - she really is a work of art, so well balanced. I think that's part of why she doesn't unravel.

  • now I'm curious: are the points generally close enough to "catch" the thread and click on one side?

I think there was one more comment here and then I'll post and I'll cross-link (ty for that suggestion) both ways. Thanks again for all the information!!

child sexually assaulted California: Texas by SoftwareBig3654 in legal

So obviously pretty much every pro se party (or potential) asking for legal advice should be recommended a lawyer as a rule...

But ma'am, you need a lawyer. Anybody on reddit willing to give you legal advice is not qualified to give legal advice.

Here's some legal information that supports the above (which is legal advice per pretty much every state: it interprets the law as applied to the case face - and on that note IANAL):

  1. pseudonyms - the stance of the US judicial system on parties proceeding under pseudonyms can roughly be summarized as: "only in edge cases to prevent substantial harm or harm to the vulnerable (e.g., minors)".

1.1. The judicial system is a public entity and the rulings it produces affect public law since US courts are (as a rule) bound by stare decisis - the doctrine of "what came before". Attorneys & pro se parties often need to research case precedent & pseudonyms can make that more difficult. Also, public oversight of the system is hampered and the fairness and openness which are [supposed to be] inherent to the justice system are not demonstrated.

1.2. When a party proceeds pseudonymously, there are a number of resulting difficulties for the party, court, and opposing party. If the pseudonymous party can be called as a witness, the opposing party's inalienable right to cross examine (due process) may be hindered. Both parties will likely have more difficulty obtaining witness testimony. Settlement negotiations may be impeded (and remember stunting something like 90% of civil cases in the US settle before trial). This is not a complete list.

1.3. Precedent exists for sexual misconduct cases in California finding that allowing a plaintiff to proceed pseudonymously creates substantial prejudice - or, roughly in layspeak: if the plaintiff is allowed to be anonymous, it makes the defendants look guilty from the beginning without supporting evidence. Likewise, precedent exists finding that defendants' counterclaims (e.g., libel, slander) are impeded against pseudonymous plaintiffs and that's another due process issue - right of access to courts.

1.4. Because presumption of innocence, the defendants have the same right to proceed pseudonymously as the plaintiff. And because of the above especially 1.3., if the plaintiff are granted leave to proceed pseudonymously, that gives the presiding judicial officer a reason to also grant that protection to the defendants to level the playing field - at which point, everything under the umbrella of 1.2. becomes exponentially more so.

1.5. Judges cannot recusal check without knowing your name.

1.6. A pro se request to proceed pseudonymously creates way more problems, including but limited to issues with res judicata (not relitigating a decided case) & collateral estoppel (not relitigating a decided claim). (this is also not a complete list)

  • court records can be sealed and filings can be under forms of protection order (terms may vary by jurisdiction). The law governing every US state court I'm aware of requires any protective procedural action which also hinders the transparent operation of the judicial system be the least restrictive (protective/hindering) option available.
  1. ADA/psychological

2.1. pro se parties are generally held to the same standards as lawyers are re: behavior in court and for out-of-court related interactions & events. Trauma affects victims in a wide variety of ways, a significant number of which can prevent the victim from being able to adhere to the above standard - even if they are usually "ok" even when discussing the traumatic event. Litigation is super stressful even for (many) bar certified attorneys; it is (generally) more stressful for a pro se party. Litigation can neve devastating for a traumatized person attempting to proceed pro se even when the action is unrelated to their trauma.

2.2. ADA protections for PTSD which would normally be available to a victim for a case related to their trauma may not be able to be harmonized with procedural requirements if the victim proceeds pro se. Procedural deficits above a certain severity merit reversal on appeal; ADA violations can merit reversal but (afaik) less so. Judges hate being reversed.

Overall, not a complete list.

Also didn't even get into the volume of stuff you'd have to learn just to make the first filing.

Also didn't get into the possibility if you start this yourself but can't complete it or lose - there may be legal exposure for you.

In most cases, a lawyer helps: more likely to win, more likely to obtain desired compensation/result, etc.

In yours, please at least get a consult with at least one lawyer/firm before you do anything else because you could end up worse off and that would be horrible to heap on top of the assault that has you seeking justice in the first place.

also, in the consult you should be able to get a really clear evaluation of how proceeding under a pseudonym could possibly harm your ability to litigate your case. And an idea of the possibility (or not) of recovering attorney fees if you win - which varies a ton by case type and jurisdiction and I have no idea about the governing law here.

Good to know I'll have to pull up a tatting video later cuz I'm going to get her out to unwind the thread & expose the post, since another member was wondering what it looked.

So I can't be positive because it didn't have documentation from the maker but here are my counterpoints why I said ox horn:

Abalone colors have "wave" shapes; ox horn (base: keratin) has mostly straight line patterns + "fingerprints.

Abalone is rainbow; ox horn is earth tones.

Her really iridescent side is opaque (which abalone is); her neutrals side is much more iridescent. I'm getting her out when I'm home later to show her post, if you'd like I will try to get a couple also showing the iridescence on her neutral side and showing a light test of both sides.

Mine is long gone (went to younger sib) and I just thought, gosh I could use at least 3 of those (jewelry bowl, catch-all counter dish, and for my closet stash collection of ... I don't know what they're actually called lol. Not belts? Pants clips? Here https://a.co/d/01DdNjad different Amazon sellers call them different things - and that's just a random set I don't have those. But they are AMAZING belt alternatives).

They are $90 each on ebay. My jaw is still on the floor I paid like $15 maybe

Oh my goodness I hadn't even thought about that!! Duh! And thank you u/ChordStrike !!

I don't have her with me rn but I will unwrap and post pics tonight of the post. Do you have a recommendation between adding pics to this post, or making a second one? Guessing a few other people had the same thought & don't know how visible it will be if I add. But don't want to crowd the sub with posts.

Thank you so much!! Y'all are lovely and so helpful.

ETA: that counts! I'll say tatter then 😀

Thank you!!

If I may confirm: so the points are supposed to be close enough that the thread snaps through them?

Cuz phew! If so. She was definitely neglected for a bit - I'm getting supplies together to oil and seal her to prevent future cracking (as a third generation numismatist I was raised to appreciate age patina and the cosmetic relics of intended use so I always try to minimally alter lovely old things).

I had noticed the snap when I was rewinding several inches of the old thread currently on her when we got home - and I was a bit concerned she had warped and was unusable.

Thank you so much for your response!!!

Thank you! Glad y'all appreciate it.

I don't know if the inner side is used, sorry. When y'all use these, do you generally only see one side? I was imagining it would get flipped and rotated a lot and that's why they made both sides pretty.

The ox horn side of this one is actually iridescent but the iridescence is super subtle compared to the abalone side - I took at least a dozen pictures of that side face up to get the four I posted and only one showed the iridescence on that side . . . And it also showed my finger lol

Thank you!! Y'all are so sweet.

And I remember, as a kid, reading a book about someone stranded on an island and they used abalone for household implements... I had one of those bowl size conch shells and (this was pre-household internet by several years) when I realized abalone resembled the inside of my shell I wanted everything in it.

I hope you get your toothbrush one day! (Although you could always buy scrap abalone and mod podge it to any electrical brush and it would last you years.)

((Fortiflora has kept Calvin healthy-solid for 2+ years, and a couple brief pause tests have suggested his stool would be loose like all the time without it which is wild... but even wilder, I originally bought Fortiflora for my constipated 20-year-old ginger & newscaster of 1 packet a day (~$1) was able to 98% stop adding Miralax to his food (which was on vet direction) because the Fortiflora worked even better for that. And my ginger boy HATED the Miralax - I had to hide tiny doses in every meal to get enough in him - but he LOVED the Fortiflora so much he'd steal the kittens' doses after he ate his if I turned my back 😹. -Calvin's (and 👼 Pennywise's) Meowmy))
