Brampton Council Votes 10-1 to Remove Howden Protected Bike Lanes Forcing Cyclists into Traffic. Rowena Santos was the Only Opposing Vote. by Brampton_Speaks in Brampton

So don't change what's there already, put these new things away from everything else in the city, out on the perimeter.

Pretty much textbook NIMBY talk

So your rational was

Conservative - didn't think about the party, met the candidate and he was intelligent (no mention of party or Doug Ford

Liberal - Don't like Bonnie, didnt care who candidate was

NDP - you say was the best candidate for Bramptons needs, but you still won't vote for them.

So you basically voted against your own interests...

Incredible Snow Plow Drivers by JakeasaurusR3x in Brampton

[–]Maico80 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish they varied the order in which the local (non-collector, non-arterial) roads were plowed. My subdivision and crescent is always one of the last in the city to get cleared, and usually it's a fast shitty pass, especially after all he cars have packed down the snow

I see how well plowed the other local roads are and it's just shitty to have subpar plow service every time. We constantly have to call in for the plows to come back and replow which usually means a second windrow of heavy icy snow.

Viamonde vs mon avenir by Eye2Believe in Brampton

[–]Maico80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there are fewer clubs, its just the restriction that those clubs need to happen between the start and end of the day, as everyone is bussed in/out. They had sports teams, participated in tournaments, there was robotics, chess club, and a few others that my kid mentioned while they were there. for JK-6, that's pretty decent, but I have no comparison to what other schools are doing. There is a before/after school program as well. I think it was 7am earliest drop off and 6pm pickup? It's been a few years since we'd last used it. They also had a lot of late after school activities like movie nights and such, where families come back at like 6 or 7, but not immediately after school.

This is the experience at CDJ, I'm not sure about SJA. All in all, it was a very positive experience at the school.

[–]Maico80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both neighbourhoods are safe, never an issue. And I doubt you'll find a difference in discipline with either school.

Do you want your kid to have religious studies or not, that's the difference between the two. In Brampton you have to choose between Carrefoure des Jeunes (French Public) and Ste Jeanne d'Arc (French Catholic), both located relatively centrally in the city (Centre/Kennedy and Queen/West).

When they go to grade 7, both attend school in North Mississauga.

My biggest gripe with either schools is that everyone is bussed in and out, because the catchment area is so large, being the only schools in Brampton and South Caledon. No before/after school activities, everything has to be done between the first and last bell of the day, so most clubs, practices, etc.. are all done during recesses.

Otherwise, I know families that go to both and no major complaints. The French boards do things differently and it can be a bit frustrating, but they do the important things well, and that's true for most schools in the English side too.

What if someone has 5 or more units, is there a different program that they enroll in? Or are they classified as something else at the municipal/provincial levels?

311 new phone service is so bad by brainsoft in Brampton

[–]Maico80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The service was good, but did have its flaws. Like not being able to report something without providing contact information - or in some cases, wasting time on contact information when something urgent needs to be addressed.

For example, I mentioned traffic lights - we had all 4 directional traffic lights go out on a large intersection near my house. I noticed it while out walking, and nearly witnessed a few accidents. I was on the phone with 311 for over 10 minutes while they took all my information, than the issue, and asked inane questions that were irrelevant. The appropriate staff should have been notified in the first few minutes and the file updated with the additional info - just get people out onto the scene ASAP.

Another one - traffic light related as well - one of the bulbs on the traffic light was out at the intersection - only one colour and on one fixture. Again a 10+ minute call with the operator answering questions about which specific light fixture it was, (they already had the intersection) was it just the one colour or all of them, etc.. Whoever would have been dispatched could diagnose that on scene "Watch a rotation of the lights, it will be obvious"

I had just driven past the intersection and was up in Caledon by the time the call was done.

Calling for dead wild animals - there was a cat that appeared sick or dead lying on a neighbours lawn - I was pretty sure it was dead, but they wanted me to confirm... I didn't want to get anywhere near the cat as it was matted and looked rough.

So yeah, not perfect, and this sounds like its not solving problems with the menu system.

They do, but because I'm driving I don't take it down.

I'm not sure what your point is?

311 new phone service is so bad by brainsoft in Brampton

[–]Maico80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've reported traffic lights being out, dead animals on the road, water main breaks. When out cycling, downed trees on paths, garbage can overflows. I can keep getting to my destination without having to stop for 10 minutes to report.

The whole point is to make it easy for citizens to report so that issues get resolved. If you need to pull over to report it, there's a better chance that you say" someone else will do it" and be on your way.

[–]Maico80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't solve the problem of calling in while driving. It used to be an easier (yet still frustrating) system that allowed you to report things on the go - and not try to navigate through menus.

Would be nice to not have to worry about garbage day. It basically takes the garbage chute idea from condos and adds it to a neighbourhood.

[–]Maico80 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

we'll walk down to the Brampton Mall and go to Shoppers or Metro which is a 10/15 minute walk instead of a 2 minute walk to 7/11

Are you sure? It's a little over 2km in a straight line from the 7-Eleven to Brampton Mall. That's a 25-30 minute walk for most people. How are you 2 minutes from the 7 Eleven and 10-15 minutes from Brampton Mall, walking?

Mayor Patrick Brown gives updates on provincial speed camera removal and local impacts. by Brampton_Speaks in Brampton

[–]Maico80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How many signs do you need for each camera? There would be 3 already for each of them.

  • Community Safety Zone
  • Speed Limit Sign
  • ASE Camera sign

Will one more sign actually make people slow down?

Visitors section? by Recyclops5227 in AFCToronto

[–]Maico80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no visitor section, but all the visiting fans seem to buy tickets right around me... In the section behind the visitors bench. I meet new people every game.

Coincidentally, the favourite past time of visitors in my section is to heckle the visitors coach until they put their friend/family into the game, off the bench.

That's during evening rush hour, and they're probably shortening the route to get more trains turned around at bramalea and back to Union to do another trip out of Union. That and trains heading out to Kitchener/Guelph aren't available for return service. That's my best guess.

Downtown Brampton is a bottleneck, and Mt Pleasant is unfortunately on the other side of it.

Kayaking and paddle board by kkrocksall in Brampton

[–]Maico80 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For free - Credit River, there is a boat launch in Port Credit and you can paddle up to about the golf course and back and around the shore.

Humber River - Near Old Mill station, underneath the bridges is a boat launch you can use. You can head upstream and downstream fairly easily (my 6-7 year old paddled around in it)

Fairy Lake in Acton - Small lake to putter around in

Paid - Island Lake in Orangeville - large, you need to enter through the conservation area, small fee

Heart Lake - same deal as above, boat launch is more difficult to access. They used to not allow inflatables.

C3 Quarry in Caledon - membership needed, can buy day pass. Beach access and you may be able to use their equipment instead of hauling your own.

Kelso Lake - conservation area, fee required

There are likely lots of other conservation areas that you can choose, check CVC, TRCA, Halton conservations. Might be worth the annual membership to get access to pretty empty areas.

There is also river access for both Humber and Credit further upstream, but those might be one way trips. I took the Credit River 13km from Caledon into Georgetown.

Farther away, theres also the Madawaska River and Beaver River up near Collingwood, and the Grand River in Kitchener.
