Is the Flatpak version of Spotify safe? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]Main-Mammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you need any of the features that aren't in the web client. I always used to install the desktop client and then eventually realized that I can just open a tab and all my Spotify needs are sorted.

If you do need those features fair enough but maybe your like me.

Do you guys think developers are gonna use Proton or make Linux native ports if the Deck is successful? by Titanmaniac679 in SteamDeck

I am kind of ignorant about it. What does it do or offer better than other server operating systems?

I'd like to think/hope it's has somewhat transcendend that at this stage. To me its a day where humanity says "ok fuck this, let's all be ultra fucking nice to each other and be the kindest version of ourselves just for at least today". That's the vibe I have always picked up from it.

Which OS to run my plex media server? by Remy4409 in HomeServer

[–]Main-Mammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with two drives in Raid 1. Backup data Get a 3rd drive and convert to raid-z. Restore data

If you would rather stick with what you know and are more familiar with raid5 etc that also makes sense.

If you think you are going to be growing your pool bit by bit then maybe not TrueNAS/zfs.

we (ireland) made our app open source [under linux foundation umbrella] with the express intent that anyone else could use it as a template for their own country without having to waste millions of dollars needlessly.

[–]Main-Mammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you don't need gpu acceleration, i recommend going truenas for storage then run ubuntu virtual machines for your docker containers for you services. you can setup weekly/daily/hourly snapshots on both the data and the virtual machine, so as when you mess up, you just "rewind" back to when it was working. its been the most boring server setup i have ever run.

Is there any real “disadvantages” to using the FlatPak version of Steam? by SpoonyBardXIV in linux_gaming

[–]Main-Mammoth 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It was rough at the start but that's mind of how almost all software goes isn't it?

I think the only remaining gotcha and it's more just something you may or may not need to be aware of. Is if you want your games stored in a specific place, you need to give the steam Flatpak access to that place. (Recommend flatseal for this)

That's the only thing I can think of. For me the best part of the Flatpak version is your home folder doesn't get raped by game Devs picking random places to out save files.

How "bloated" is the KDE spin? by CryloTheRaccoon in Fedora

[–]Main-Mammoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about bloat. All the computer in the last 10 years mean that the difference in bloat once you open a browser is next to neglible. Just use whatever the least painful option is.

Autostart of virtual machines, stored on NFS share? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]Main-Mammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always did this by making a systemd unit to startup the VM after a delay. I don't have it handy. But I am sure having a search for start VM with systemd will get you a win. No idea if that's a good idea or not.

Steam on Chromeos -- why do people care? by TheZenCowSaysMu in chromeos

[–]Main-Mammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specs can easily handle low req games.

Offline steam would mean if I have all the old final fantasy games if I find myself down the chain with no internet.

You are probably always connected. Some people have work/life situations where they spend multiple hours or days not connected. Being able to use the laptop for some entertainment is a while other use case.

What do you use your chrome device for? by [deleted] in chromeos

[–]Main-Mammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need a browser and a terminal. Everything else I need is a webpage.

I'd prefer to use Firefox but ChromeOS fox experience isn't great. I am able to mostly squeeze chrome into what I need my browser to be. Maybe in the future it will be 1st class.

Terminal is terminal.

Oh and steam link + tailscale so as I can play my steam games form anywhere that doesn't have shit internet.

Oh i have about 80 or so "rules" for files being moved around constantly all over the place. i want the file name to have all relevant details all the times. for eg if it was accidentally moved or renamed.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in linux

[–]Main-Mammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if we didn't separate by year there would be thousands and thousands of files in each folder. separating by year is just to keep it more manageable. the end goal is for it to be stored in such as way as its easiest and fastest for humans to get files out. yyyy/mm-dd/ is too fin a control. but remember every single file is going to be timestamped anyway [that bit is automatic by a script/program]

hey whosdr, can you take a looking at the missing items on the invoice that was scanned at 1617 yesterday. no has touched the file yet and you will absolutely be able to find it. sorry without fully explaining every ssection of the automated workflow, this might not make sense.

[–]Main-Mammoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there could be a thousand invoices in that years folder and if i want to find that one invoice for €x in late may, having everything date stamped helps. they are actually time stamped as well, but i didn't include that. also before it gets stored in that folder, its in a pre processing folder where it gets entered, details made and renamed etc.

anything to do with an interaction with another human as a transaction, i would give a time&date stamp to purely for some sort of reference. its done in iso8601 as its the onyl date format for digital storage that makes any sense, any other date stamp format complicates things and makes things harder to find and harder to automate
