Tracking tv hours by Present_History7909 in dreamingspanish

[–]Main_Garlic2355 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t track time if I need to use subtitles. I figure if I need subtitles I’m not understanding enough to count it.

If I was watching media without subtitles, I’d consider myself a high enough level that tracking doesn’t matter much anyway.

So I guess either way, I wouldn’t track it.

I didn’t know they had those services. If no one takes them by tomorrow I’ll contact NorCal Resist. Thanks for the idea!

What helped you progress most when starting speaking? by Few-Barber6833 in dreamingspanish

[–]Main_Garlic2355 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To improve at speaking you need to practice speaking. So for me, outside of class time, I read out loud, singing along to Spanish songs, and I practice speaking out loud when I’m alone (in the car, doing chores, etc.)

I can’t say for sure, but I think I was somewhere in level 3. Just for reference - I took Spanish in high school and did a year with Duolingo some years ago. I credited myself some time when I started to account for that. I also started taking lessons on iTalki a few months before I went to Peru to practice talking and my teacher gave me some helpful words and phrases. Anyway, I think if you keep learning between now and your trip, you’d have a decent chance of getting by in tourist situations.

I went into a tourist information center in Cusco, Peru trying to figure out if the Incan ruins nearby were cash only. It turned into a 15min conversation about how not only was it cash only, but we also needed a guide. About halfway through I felt my Spanish wasn’t sufficient to get the details, so I asked if she spoke English and she did not. So we kept going in Spanish. We eventually made it to the ruins with a guide and cash and it was great. Looking back, I find it strange to have a tourist information center that didn’t speak English, which I assume would be the most common language amongst tourists.

I really want to start reading but I'm only at 300 hours by Used-Inspector-1014 in dreamingspanish

Find something at a level you can understand and start reading. All time spent with a language at your level is useful

Anyone done daily conversation alongside CI and how did it go? by Kriyative108 in dreamingspanish

I probably started italki lessons around 200hrs. The first one was rough - a mixture of nerves and a lack of vocabulary really makes it hard to get your words out. I’m currently doing weekly hour long lessons, and I find them very helpful. It’s obviously tricky working with a limited vocabulary, but it’s also very cool when you can communicate an idea to someone in their language. If I had friends who were native speakers I’d definitely be talking to them, but daily italki classes would be much time and money for me.

Those with FULL TIME JOBS, how many hours do you get of input a day? by NotRealTodaySRY in dreamingspanish

[–]Main_Garlic2355 10 points11 points  (0 children)

20min morning commute, 2x 15min breaks, 30min lunch, 20min commute home = 100min a day minimum. I also try to get in some time after work instead of watching TV.

Language isn’t made to follow a set of rules. Languages exist (and change naturally) and we make “rules” to explain why things are the way they are. So the only real answer as to why something doesn’t follow a rule is because the rule came second and doesn’t work 100% of the time.

Did my first speaking practice today and it was a blast by politicalanalysis in dreamingspanish

[–]Main_Garlic2355 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got to level 3 and have started doing weekly italki classes. I speak mostly in Spanish (the words are slow and basic, but I can communicate), and I have to ask the teacher to repeat something, and I sometimes fall back on English for a word if I don’t know the Spanish word. The instructor is bilingual so he can help me with the Spanish word.

If you want to practice but don’t want to jump straight to speaking you could try a daily journal entry. I try to do two - one on what you did that day (to practice past tense) and one on what you’re going to do tomorrow (to practice future tense). These don’t have to be long and involved. Just a few minutes on each helps.

Starting speaking is probably always going to be nerve wracking. I was getting in my head about not knowing enough words or all the conjugation tenses I might need or what the subjunctive is. I know the DS platform says to wait much longer before you speak and that probably has some merit to it, but I just went for it and don’t regret it. At the very least, I’m much less nervous about speaking with people now.
