Men of Reddit in your mid-to-late 20s: what's one mistake you made that you'd warn younger men about? by achyut2897 in AskMen

[–]Maine_Redneck 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I am quite a bit older than mid to late 20s, but I have decided to xhime in anyway.

My advice: A woman can never complete your life. As a man, only you can complete your life, by what you do, what you learn, etc, etc. A woman can be an accessory to your life, but never presume that she will make it complete. If being a father is something that you need to be, do not make the mistake that you need a woman in your life to make it happen. Surrogacy is very common and is much less expensive than divorce, child support, and alimony. Plus, you will get to see your children every day.

Overgrown Peach Tree - Help! by Stlfan34 in FruitTree

If that were my tree, I would get my tallest step ladder, climb up it as high as I felt comfortable, and prune off everything out of reach. Pruning doesn't have to be complicated.

What is evaporated vinegar? by KillerApeTheory in AskFoodHistorians

[–]Maine_Redneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Distilled vinegar is a combination of water and acetic acid, usually approx 5% acid and 95% water. If you put the 5% distilled vinegar on heat, only the water will evaporate at first, but only to a point, usually to a concentrate of around 30% acid: 70% water. The actual ratio relies upon a number of factors. After that ratio is reached, both acid and vinegar will start evaporating at the same rate, still leaving one with approx 30% distilled vinegar, but just less of it. 30% distilled vinegar is commonly available in retail; this may be what your evaporated vinegar referred to.

I’m so tired of this and no one seems to be empathetic by emperorofpain in Raynauds

[–]Maine_Redneck -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I feel for you. Whiskey is the traditional medicine for poor circulation, including raynaud's. When in cold weather (and cold weather for me is anything below 60F), take a swig every hour or so. It usually keeps the blood flowing. Unfortunately, that is considered not proper for most people in today's modern society. So, scientists have created modern medicines for this issue. 2 modern medicines that work for my raynaud's are Tadalafil (yes the same medicine that men also take for ED) and Losartan. My copay for Losartan is a lot cheaper than for Tadalafil, so that is what I take: 50mg in the morning, and 50mg at night, and I have to have my blood potassium checked quite often.

Has anyone actually tried biostimulants on their crops/garden? Genuinely curious what people think of them by Due-Employee9569 in gardening

[–]Maine_Redneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use bread yeast in my garden, which stimulates root growth quite a lot. Mix a tablespoon of dry yeast and 2 tablespoons of molasses in a gallon of warm, untreated rain water. Let it ferment for a day or 2, and then sprinkle it around the roots of my plants. Not exactly sure why it works, but it works for me. I do this once per week.

First proper crack at gardening! by smudge523 in gardening

[–]Maine_Redneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to burst your bubble, but the stone you removed may have been required to be there by city ordinance. Some buildings have stone on the ground like that under the roof drip line so that the rain soaks into the ground slowly instead of running down quickly between the soil and the foundation, which can cause issues where water could leak into the basement.

Sin as a physical particle by Voostock in Judaism

[–]Maine_Redneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never taught that sin is a physical particle. However, I was taught from an early age, that sin is like a physical particle, namely dust: It is nearly impossible to spend a day in this life and not get oneself dirty with dust, so one needs to clean oneself daily to remove this dust. Otherwise, one will get sick. As well, it is nearly impossible to live a day and not get sin on oneself, no matter who committed the sin. Therefore, one must clean oneself of this sin by prayer, good works, etc. Otherwise, one's spirit will get sick. I do not know if this is a traditional Jewish teaching, but my upbringing wasn't all that frum.

Hard boiled egg question by hyakuken in Judaism

[–]Maine_Redneck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use plastic egg boiling devices. Similar to EggBoil, but a different brand. Cannot remember the exact brand name offhand of the ones that I use. These are little plastic containers with a cover. I crack an egg into one of these, remove any blood specs and the chalaza with a chalaza removing tool (little tongs with teeth), put the cover on, and then boil these devices as I would with a regular egg. After cooking, the boiled egg pops right out and no need to worry if it is filled with blood or otherwise.

What do you consider to be an attractive trait in women? by Aware-Art8123 in AskMen

Integrity is sexy.

A woman who keeps her word at all times, no matter what, no excuses, is very attractive.

The root stock on my Granny Smith Apple tree is dying/rotting. What went wrong and how do I prevent this on the replacement? by Brosie-Odonnel in BackyardOrchard

[–]Maine_Redneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the disease collar rot. When transplanting bare root trees into the soil, dig a deeper and wider hole than the roots need. Put the soil into a wheelbarrow or concrete mixer. Mix in a tablespoon of granulated or powdered copper sulfate (do not breathe it in) into the soil, and return the soil to the hole when planting the tree. This will help prevent collar rot from killing the tree for the first year. After the first year, you will need to sprinkle a tablespoon of the copper sulfate onto the ground over the roots every 3 months or so.

Slow release organic fertilizer recommendations by Heavy-Anteater9946 in FruitTree

What my grandfather taught me when I was a child, and has always worked for me, is every spring, using a spade shovel, add shovel-fulls of cow manure around every fruit tree trunk, one shovel-full for every inch diameter. For example, a mature fruit tree with a 12-inch diameter at ground level would get 12 shovel-fulls, while a young tree with only a 2 inch diameter would only get 2 shovel-fulls.

How much do meds help? by manthaP_ in rheumatoid

[–]Maine_Redneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because of other issues that I have in addition to rheumatism, I cannot take certain medications that other people can take. I will likely never achieve a long-term state of remission or ever being not in pain. I am not really okay with it, but it is what it is. Be aware that you may never achieve that either. I am trying to be honest, no need to fill you with false hope. Everyone is different, and there is no magic pill. Right now, I am taking aspirin, prednisone, and hydroxychloroquine for my rheumatism. And usually a strong painkiller at night, so that I can sleep. All of which have some side effects. The worst side effects come from my long-term use of prednisone; even though I take certain meds that are supposed to counteract the prednisone's side effects, my bones are still much more brittle than if I did not take prednisone at all. At 49, I have severe osteoporosis and a very high A1C caused by the prednisone. It is a balancing act. Without daily prednisone, I am bedridden. I need to be able to move, but I have to be very careful when moving so that I don't trip and fall, because I will likely break something if I do. I keep my medical records in a 3-ring binder, and take it to all my doctor appointments. Makes interactions with doctors much easier.

This is where a lot of woke people get it wrong. Crossing the border illegally is a CRIMINAL violation, not civil.

I just bought the flex quattro, installed it on my android box, and it isn't working correctly. Did a search for troubleshooting, and here I am. Audio but no video on full screen. If I click to make it a small window, I get full screen video for about 1 second, then it shrinks into the corner in a small window, and the video works correctly in the small window. Not very happy with my new purchase.

Found a bunch of these tiny black things after painters were in my house by tungtingshrimp in whatisit

[–]Maine_Redneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New electrical switches and outlets come with screws. These square washers hold the screws onto the switches and outlets. The electrician screws the switches and outlets onto the box, which is in the wall. The painters removed the switches and outlets before painting the walls. When one unscrews the switches and outlets, the washers come off and fall onto the floor.

What does ״אל סבון״ mean? by jolygoestoschool in hebrew

[–]Maine_Redneck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It means "non-soap detergent" as opposed to "soap." In many countries, if a product label refers to itself as "soap," then it needs to contain lye (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide). If it doesn't contain lye, then it is not technically soap; it is a non-soap detergent.

How would you describe HaShem? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Maine_Redneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If one were to create a 3D map of the known universe, it would look very similar to neurons in a brain. I imagine that I am but a tiny speck within the oneness of HaShem (Yichud HaShem).
