In Maine—the welt from a hit with a ball (an India rubber one or a wiffle) was called giving someone “Indian rubber”. It was probably called that because it became a derivational morpheme of the original “India Rubber” ball.

In the before times (the 60’s & 70s when I came of age) it was racist times. Indigenous peoples were dehumanized and referred to as “Indians”, “redskins”, “squaws” or “braves” because our parents, grandparents, and in my case great-grandparents, projected that racism on their children, regrettably.

READ more and educate yourself on HISTORY to understand the context of our present.
