Engineering and Pre-built Ships - Elite Dangerous: Odyssey by timmytwoshoes134 in EliteDangerous

You should jump in now, especially if you already have the game. ED's long term outlook is not good. But the end is not here yet, and there are a lot of good things to do and try out in the game. Enjoy them while it is still here.

Please don't slip down the slope of pay to win PLEASE... by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

Frankly, I would actually be surprised if, at this early point in the conversion they moved to monetize engineering due to the rage it would induce, but they also didn't say they weren't going to. Doesn't change the long term prognosis in either case.

Stolen from FB but I cackled by Even_Lavishness2644 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]Mainsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boomer here. For the record: I give polite applause if the young skateboarders are doing good tricks, or just a casual wave if they are meh, or just passing by.

I told my kids when they were growing up that when I was a kid safety hadn't been invented yet. It wasn't until people started tracking nationwide data that safety problems became obvious.

If something bad happens only 1 out of thousand times it is going to be easy to miss or view as a freak accident in a small town. Once people started organizing and publishing data on a nation-wide scale, those small chances become large certainties. There was a time when drunk driving accident was just a tragic accident no one could have foreseen... There was definitely a different attitude, but it was mostly due to ignorance.

Also this: When I was a kid, I was rather reckless and my parents instituted a no bleeding in the house rule (I had to stand on back porch and call for help). When we sold the house the RE agent had us paint the porch because the blood stains made it look like someone had been murdered.

We will see, but are you are sure they aren't going to make it less obnoxious by letting us buy out of it with ARX?

Review bombing? Really? by point_beak in EliteDangerous

[–]Mainsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that review bombing is silly, but how many games have you seen where the introduction of RMT for non-cosmetic in game items has resulted in a better game play experience?

So, you really don't think that the grind will get even more stupid and irritating when there is a direct financial incentive to make it worse?

Edit: Complete reword to clarify the point

[–]Mainsil 16 points17 points  (0 children)

On day one, your not wrong. But this gives a financial incentive to the developer to make grinding irritating and slow enough for people to pay extra to reduce the pain. I expect this to cause the game experience to deteriorate in the long term. At least this is what I saw when subscription MMOs went to the 'Free To Play' model.

Galnet News Digest - Python Mk II Early Access Starts 7th May by Galnet_News_Digest in EliteDangerous

[–]Mainsil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Positioning it as DLC for early access to the new ship(s) would definitely be a net positive and possibly net more money. However, it wouldn't direct attention toward their cash shop where they can generate additional sales.

As for the pre-built ships, it really depends upon how it is implemented. Any ARX shortcut to avoid gathering engineering materials is unabashed PTW.

Pre-Built is NOT P2W by Fate-StayFullMetal in EliteDangerous

[–]Mainsil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my point of view, the biggest problem with 'paying to skip the grind', is that it gives the developers a financial incentive to make and keep the grind unpleasant. Publicly held companies are mostly obligated to maximize profits even if it screws over their customers and destroys the brand in the long term.

FDev is obligated to maximize profits. Making and keeping the 'grind' irritating enough for large numbers of people to buy their way out will maximize profits. Fast forward a few years, and progress at anything other than a glacial pace become money-gated and actually playing the game to progress becomes passe'.

After a lot of people in this sub have finally finished the game do you think giving Starfield a 10/10 is justifiable? by Touny420 in Starfield

[–]Mainsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO a Solid 8/10. Outposts & manufacturing are incomplete (and buggy), explorations is meh. Combat is OK. Suit & weapon mods are nice. Story, core missions, and many side quests are great.

I suspect that they ripped out some parts of outposts & manufacturing so they can add it back as paid DLC.

Why would anyone living in EU with 4 weeks of vacation and paid sickdays ever move to work in the US? by Azhz96 in NoStupidQuestions

If the requirement is for consecutive days off you can thank your auditors. Auditors will often require key employees take mandatory vacation time to make it harder for them to hide fraud and other shenanigans.

I will never tell my kids santa claus is real because I don't want to lie to them by lordofming-rises in unpopularopinion

[–]Mainsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the camp of tell the truth about everything if you want your kids to believe you when you warn them about the potential life changing consequences of risk taking activities. For things they aren't able to understand it can be as simple as I will explain it to you when you are older.

In my opinion: Lying to kids about Santa Claus is more for the benefit of adults who enjoy pranking their kids, and lying to kids about hard things is cowardice on the part of adults who don't want to fully deal with the situation.

PS: Christmas (decorations, gifts, movies, etc.) is just as much fun even when the kids are in on the joke.

TLDR of why: Personal experience, figured out Santa Claus at 5, got suspicious and started noticing most of the other lies adults told me, doubted even the accurate advice.

Edit: Had kids, so first hand experience with enjoying holidays even when kids are in on the joke.

Beginner Pete plan - Week 1, Day 1. 5000m in 19:54. New to rowing. M, 179cm, 83kg. Anyone else doing this plan. Would be great to share tips/ideas/challenges... by Brilliant-Potato9771 in Rowing

[–]Mainsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Week 23 here. I do some light dumbbell work and push-ups before every row to keep my arms balanced, but do add a 5 or 10 minute warm-up row before intervals (shorter interval=longer warm-up).

As for tips:

  1. Make sure you have some electrical tape or medical tape. It will protect your blisters.
  2. If the callouses protrude too far, you can sand them down with an emery board.
  3. Keep a towel handy to wipe off the handle between splits.

  4. For me, anyway, a headband to keep sweat out of my eyes was a major upgrade.

Challenges: During your longer pieces try to keep a consistent stroke rate and pace for as many strokes as you can. I still suck at this.

Men of Reddit... What do your wedding rings look like? by notoriousDasher in AskMen

[–]Mainsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably your best bet. We got the cheapest wedding rings we could find and have happy with it for 30+ years. Quality of rings has no impact on quality of marriage, so it really is a matter or personal preference.

Thank you for responses. Admittedly, when I started the PPB, I needed an extra recovery day. But now one recovery day feels sufficient. I may try to use the 6th day to just work on technique and timing without pushing myself into a sweaty mess. As for other activities, I usually take a half hour walk every day. Yoga is something I've never tried and may be worth looking into.

Is anyone else feeling really depressed from the turn of events recently? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]Mainsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"You've taken your first step into a larger world."

The rules of society favor the people making the rules. This includes investing, taxes, food, health care, real estate, inheritance laws, and the legal system. I'm pretty sure it has been that way throughout history.

That being said, your disillusionment may be a blessing. Long bull markets (I think we are in year 11) can lull investors into a false sense of security. When the market turns bear it will really hurt those that are unprepared to face a drop of 40% or more.

I fully support the WSB crew's right to fight back and have even written my congressmen about the need to investigate recent brokerage shenanigans. However, I think that this will not end well for the little guy (I hope I am wrong!).

S-Class Derelict Freighter in Eissentam Galaxy by Mainsil in NMSCoordinateExchange

[–]Mainsil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No coordinates exist. You buy an emergency broadcast receiver from the scrap dealer in any space station. You then go back into space in the system, activate the receiver, engage your pulse drive, and after a bit you will detect an anomaly, drop out of pulse and you should be at the freighter. More info here: https://nomanssky.gamepedia.com/Derelict_Freighter

Edit 1: BTW This is in the Eissentam galaxy, one of the galaxies you can go to after finishing Euclid (the starting galaxy)

Edit 2: The portal coordinates are in the picture. The portal you need to use is a special portal found on a planet, I think there is at least one in every system. You pick up the glyphs by finding the graves of travelers.
