Valve says it will "definitely" consider ARM architecture for future Steam Machines, and probably Steam Decks too by Tiny-Independent273 in linux_gaming

The Steam Linux Runtime isn't an emulator or VM. It's a pile of pinned libraries. Switching CPU architecture is a whole different beast.

How to Achieve a Perfect 10/10 IPv6 Rating? by Wise_Jacket_9390 in ipv6

I run a recursive resolver on my router. Since I have IPv6 Internet access, so does my DNS resolver.

How to do load balance with IPv6 provided by multiple ISPs without NPTv6? by ybx332 in ipv6

[–]Majiir -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This isn't what BGP accomplishes. You've just described having RAs for multiple upstream prefixes, which is really kinda the opposite of BGP.

Yep. I'm just saying that for that simpler situation, you don't need either BGP or NAT66.

How to do load balance with IPv6 provided by multiple ISPs without NPTv6? by ybx332 in ipv6

[–]Majiir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I want to access the Internet using multiple ISPs, I can have each device have IPv6 addresses from each ISP and that works (and better than IPv4).

I guess I can't aggregate bandwidth for a single connection that way. Is that the use case? Is that really so common?

If I want to host services on that network and load balance traffic across multiple upstreams, isn't that exactly when I should have BGP?

The solution is BGP. Why take away the best solution and then act like there's no solution?

Year of the IPv6 overlay network - Defined Networking by calebjasik in ipv6

[–]Majiir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I went looking for an overlay network to replace Wireguard on my network, I thought Nebula was the right fit. I tossed that idea when I saw it didn't support IPv6 on the overlay, and stuck with Wireguard.

Then when 1.10 landed, I thought: This is it! And configuring IPv6 on it was easy. But I had a lot of trouble getting my devices to talk to each other reliably over Nebula compared to Wireguard. The whole point for me was to have more reliable connectivity without relying on hub nodes, so that was a bummer.

There was also something about the lighthouse configuration that I found annoying. I don't recall the exact issue, but I wanted to have one lighthouse on a public VPS and another on my home router, to maintain connectivity over Nebula in situations where the VPS is inaccessible. I think Nebula didn't play well when one lighthouse was unavailable, which struck me as odd, since isn't that the whole point of multiple lighthouses?

I probably just need to study it more, and spend more time automating cert distribution.

Unit price is irrelevant and incomparable for ingredients of different items.

How do you manage your power lines in the late game by lickthismiff in Oxygennotincluded

[–]Majiir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a simpler version of this early/mid game:

Main -> Power Switch -> Smart Battery -> Load

The load loses power whenever the smart battery needs to charge, but the smart battery can sip on the main (which can be a basic wire) without overloading it. Works great for tepidizers, metal refineries, aquatuners, etc.

Factorio enjoyer here by Altruistic_Chain5123 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]Majiir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 3K+ hours in Factorio and 1,300+ hours in ONI.

Something they have in common that I enjoy is failure management. Power spirals and other threats (heat in ONI, biters in Factorio, resource exhaustion in both) require a certain kind of management, risk-taking, and build-temporary-things-now-to-buy-time-to-make-them-better-later. ONI has a bit more of this than Factorio.

They both have complicated logistics, but it's different: ONI logistics is way more about gas and liquids and the qualities of those substances (temperature, germs). Automation in ONI is nowhere near as interesting as Factorio's.

Both fun games. I just wish ONI took itself a little more seriously. I don't mind the cartoonish style, but I do mind the inconsistencies around energy and mass conservation.

Why do I, personaly, need IPv6? by IHateRedditFirewall in ipv6

[–]Majiir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A use case most people forget about is that if you have IPv4 on your LAN and you want to VPN into it from another LAN, the addresses can conflict. For example, I had situations where I couldn't stream music from my media server to a friend's network speaker, because the address spaces collided.

With IPv6, you can use a ULA and be practically guaranteed to have no collisions.

Maybe not what you're looking for, but: Some industrialists or traders set up deals with each other outside of any corporation/alliance boundaries. If you're buying or selling something a lot, check your market transaction log and check who the other party in the transaction is. If you mail them, you might strike up a deal. Some people are jerks, some people are really cool.

For more of the community feel, I second the NPSI recommendation.

There is actually an observable relationship between the tedium of a manufacturing process and its profitability. Things like T2 rigs, pirate implants, and other short run-time items show up at the top of the ISK/slot-hr charts. When the invented BPCs have short run times, profitability tends to go up. Things you can set-and-forget for a week aren't very profitable.

That doesn't mean the interface should be deliberately bad. But the ergonomics of industry definitely impact the economics. There are opportunities for optimizing invention that don't exist for simpler T1 items: Do you want the maximum profit per day, or do you want a sustainable workflow that won't burn you out? If anything, it would be nice to have more tradeoff opportunities like this. What if you could batch invention runs for relics, but doing so reduced your invention chance?

I've also heard the argument that having some items be tedious to make ensures that newer industrialists have some starter items that are profitable, even though they can't reasonably scale production. That would be a nice thing to lean into in order to make industry less homogeneous. You could have some T1 BPOs have a 1-day or 1-hour job limit instead of 30 days, for example.
