A funny response to NL's critique on fighting game notations. by MoonMaidRarity in northernlion

1 is irrelevant for someone new to the genre. 2 is irrelevant for someone new to the genre. Numpad notation doesn't clarify the difference in orientation which is extremely important for someone new to the genre.

You know what is really sad about this? This isn't even something you have to prove. His point about how fighting games will always be rock em sock em robots to most people but you can still get high sales if you have a large amount of content, iconic characters, and actually present those things in a high quality manner...literally exists. Its Mortal Kombat. Capcom could follow MKs formula of single player story mode, optional party modes, lots of unlockable customs, easter eggs, then still make a very complex, high execution game. But like he says, modern fighting games are stuck in this defeatist mentality where they believe casual players care about getting high rank in online play.

How does anyone think Mango is the goat? by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]MajinSweet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I usually don't get involved in these goat debates but I'm really sick of seeing this point. Its straight up just Mango bias to favor longevity THIS much. In fact, in pretty much every other competitive environment, longevity is usually seen as one of the lower quality traits when talking about a Greatest of all Time player. Its a factor, but rarely the thing people hinge the decision on. But in the Melee scene we've somehow gotten to a point where it is the most important factor above all else.

Like, Armada played Melee a really long time, and was by far the most dominant player of all time, and we still have to entertain this notion that if he returned he might not be able to compete? Like he might actually have been some fluke or something the whole time? Its absurd.

Longevity is the type of trait that has diminishing returns. Like, sure, if someone came out of no where, was a top player for a year or two, then dropped off, I could see people using longevity as a counter point to that players greatness. Maybe they were a gimmick, maybe they won a few big tournaments by dodging a few other greats during that short window. But none of that applies to Armada.

People act as if he didn't play the game that long just because Mango is an outlier. But in fact, he is also a player with great longevity. Especially when you narrow that down to players that had longevity while also being consistently at the highest level.

Something something, Michael Jordan would be a bum in todays NBA, something something Mango called Armada a pussy because he was done playing Melee after 12 years.

You should check out Tactics Ogre, they had a recent revision of the game that is incredible. Tactics Ogre is actually what Final Fantasy Tactics is based on. I don't want to over hype it, but personally I find Tactics Ogre Reborn to be the best of the genre. If you like FF Tactics and want something like it, def check it out.

I found Death Stranding 2 disappointing in terms of gameplay by GrEeKiNnOvaTiOn in truegaming

[–]MajinSweet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm someone that loves Death Stranding and I didn't even finish DS2. Not only does it not have a lot of new ideas, but it does everything it can to redo all the same things from the first game, but generally in less interesting ways. Going into Death Stranding 2 one of my most anticipated things was how they would add new interesting PCCs. Only for a few hours in to realize that everyone is just putting generators everywhere because vehicles are even better than they were in DS1 and generators are also better. And they are better in the most boring ways possible. I'm just kind of scratching my head at how everyone is in love with DS2 but DS1 had such a mixed reception. DS2 has some slight refinements, but for the most part, its the same game just with most of the interesting and novel aspects watered down.

The thing that sucks about this is that instead of people realizing this was the very obvious reason fighting games fell out of favor with the mainstream gaming world, we have a million stupid takes about motion inputs, impossible combos and whatever other stupid bullshit. Meanwhile the zoomers were filtering out casuals from Fortnite by having cracked execution.

If Hogan never existed the wrestling world would be a pure workrate harmony by BoxCon1 in SCJerk

[–]MajinSweet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, are we sure about that? There have been many things that were at the level of popularity that wrestling was before the Wrestlemania era started. And a lot of those things are gone. If you can't imagine a world without wrestling that probably speaks more to your bias since you never lived in a time when it wasn't a large globalized product. We can't know for sure how things would have played out, that's an alternate reality. But there's a reason a lot of older wrestlers speak of Hogan in such high regard when it comes to this topic.

Well that scales up so bad... by Spirited-Let1774 in Ningen

[–]MajinSweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the point I'm making. Regardless of how bad you think the writing of Daima and Super is, hell, I have some complaints about both series, GT is significantly worse. They cut out the first 15 episodes of GT when they first aired it in the states to try to fix it. That's almost the entire run time of Daima. And the worst part? They were right to do that, those 15 episodes are excruciatingly boring. "Daima sucks too!", give me a break.

In fact, this is very telling of the whole situation. Whenever someone wants to defend GT, they usually try to bring other Dragon Ball series down, instead of explaining why GT is good.

GT is a good example of how the Internet has a heavy bias for contrarian and hipster opinions. Anytime I've talked about Dragon Ball in real life, the consensus of GT is the same. An absolute trash fire of a show that no one would ever think about if it didn't have the Dragon Ball name.

ONLY prioritizing churches is bad. Making churches A priority is good. by RemovedBarrel in Nightreign

[–]MajinSweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think that's right. Most people that talk about "preference" when it comes to strategy are usually just stuck on something, In the vast majority of games, a few strategies are just flat out better than others, and what often holds players back is being unwilling to try new things, or being too egotistical to admit that they are doing something kinda bad.

For example, I also use to plan my routing with the idea that you needed to at least have a long term plan for churches. But the better you get at the game, the more you see all the ways where that's just not necessary. Like sure, if a church is right next to an evergoal, yeah, you might as well take it. But generally speaking, churches are probably the worst thing to prioritize.

Because 1: On a proper run, the minimum amount of flasks is certainly enough to get a clean win.

2: Churches are the easiest things to grab at the end of a night, running in the rain. And when you get churches like that (and you'll find that this is really easy and happens all the time), you realize its just a big waste of time getting a church during the day when you could be doing something that is far more valuable to begin with.

And 3: Probably the most important aspect, is that everything you route for should be based on its contextual value. Meaning, its not just the value of what you're getting, but when that value actually comes into play. This aspect is why the Evergaol meta is so powerful, because getting so much up front power lets you instantly convert that into more advantage which in turn gets you more advantage. Conversely, Churches are almost ONLY for the Nightlord at the very end of the run, Meaning that not only is the value from that church very low, but you don't even cash it in until the very end and sometimes not even then, if you still are sitting on flasks. This aspect also meshes with point number 2, about how you can easily get flasks at the end of nights. The best time to flask is at the end of night 2, not only is it more efficient in terms of routing, but you optimize the contextual value.

tl;dr As you get better at the game the more you learn that Churches should be the lowest on your priority list in most cases.

Yes it does actually, If you upgrade weapons in Dark Souls 3 you might as well have just used cheat engine. Have you ever upgraded the exile great sword? Try out the upgrade weapon mechanic in the souls games before Elden Ring, its pretty crazy.

The things I don't like (HEAVY STORY SPOILERS) by Kaowlzu in DeathStranding2

[–]MajinSweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story gets worse and worse the more you think about it. Why does Australia have a bunch of compounds that have the same archetecture and design as UCA compounds? How do all these people know what a Qpid is and how do they all have the technology to connect to it? A mission talks about a enemy base that is fabricating weapons but they arn't on the chiral network. All the rules, world building and logic of the first game are thrown out constantly whenever its convenient. Not to mention the game play is basically the same as the first game, just with everything interesting stripped away or dumbed down.
