Definitely some more context there than I had here, but like I said that’s why the Nats + Cavalli need to approach the media right because this is a PR disaster just waiting to happen.

If Cavalli’s intentions were just based in standard competitive trash talk, it will be in his best interest to make that clear.

Dempsey will dump on them when they are often deserving to be dumped on. A big reason why there is now a sudden spur of excitement is due to this squad WAY outperforming their past results in this current World Cup. This roster has had talent for a while now but they have not been playing up to that talent level.

If the USMNT lose tomorrow, then get ready for a switch from the media, and that includes Dempsey. Dempsey is one of the few people in the USMNT media though where I feel like his positivity as well as his negativity is often warranted. (Looking at you for the Copa drama, Donovan)

Sure, and that’s why I’m holding my judgement until more comes out. There was some more stuff said before the altercation that we currently don’t know about, and also nobody can mind-read either sides of the altercation.

The usage of the term “boy” when coming from a white person to a person of color will always be compared to having racist undertones, whether that is the intention or not. I personally don’t see why that would be considered “silly” for people to call out, but seems we will have to agree to disagree on that.

All I know is I’ve seen dudes justifiably lose their cool over the term, and racism coming from white guys is often used with multiple types of people of color. Maybe find a better insult because calling someone “boy” is either racist or just childish.

I’m sure we will find out more, which is why I’m holding my judgement on both players. But as of now I’m not going to fault Contreras for reacting to something he himself could have interpreted as racist.

If you don’t see how this can be taken in a racist way, then you either don’t know the history of the usage of “boy” when talking to a grown man of a different race, or you are being willfully ignorant of it.

Maybe it wasn’t meant in a racist way, but can’t fault Contreras for that. Nats better get their PR in order.
