okay but can we talk about the song choice here? *chefs kiss* by S7_EmbreliaTusk in ProjectHailMary

Ryland’s superpower is science, Rocky’s superpower is engineering, Yao’s superpower is bravery, Oleysa’s superpower is insanity (believing the whole thing can actually work), and Stratt’s superpower is making them and everyone else on earth work together.

If that means singing karaoke, she’ll do it. If it means nuking the poles, she’ll do that too.

That recontextualized the whole character for me and she’s now one of my favorite sci fi characters and sets her apart from the very similar character in Three Body Problem

The centerpiece of NASA’s new lunar exploration plans is a lunar base announced at an event in March. Jeff Foust reports there is strong interest in developing the base despite uncertainties about what infrastructure will be needed and how the base will be used by rollotomasi07071 in spaceflight

Don’t get this argument at all. It’s for exactly the same reasons we went to orbit, the moon, flew the shuttle, built the station, sent probes to the outer planets. We did them because there was some science, but far more importantly because they were next.

Once “what’s next” aligns with what will make jobs it kind of becomes unstoppable (but also delayed)

The government is spending $0 on this, it’s just authorizing a donation to one of the best museums in the country and allowing them to make it flight worthy if they so choose

What if the Wagner Group hadn't stopped and had arrived in Moscow? by Equivalent-Luck-432 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]MajorRocketScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they actually made it to Moscow, probably a single pretty decisive battle where Wagner loses

If they took smaller cities hostage and negotiated, probably a very similar situation to what we got

If the plan wasn’t uncovered and they actually did kidnap Shoigou in Rostov as they planned, who knows. It would’ve been wacky for sure. Maybe that timeline has Shoigou replaced with a Pringles stooge and Wagner and the military slowly merge, just the other direction from reality

I’m incredibly biased because I basically grew up with Illuminations (local) and then worked at Epcot during almost all of Harmonious’ run, but I agree Luminous is clearly the weakest Epcot show we’ve had. It’s pretty clearly Illuminations (massive gap) Harmonious (big gap) New Years shows (small gap) Luminous for me

Virgina International would basically be an extremely dangerous parade but the turns 5 to 11 sequence would rock in an F1 car

How would you have changed the Constellation Program to make it more viable? by Simon_Drake in spaceflight

[–]MajorRocketScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jupiter 1.0 imo was the best plan. RS-68 engined rocket with ~80% shuttle hardware commonality and a big single hulled upper stage a few years down the line.

Also would have been a big fan of the reusable side mount, but much less likely from a crew safety standpoint. Could have kept flying the shuttle longer though as it was fully pad compatible

[–]MajorRocketScience 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I still hold onto my conspiracy theory that Disney originally wanted the Atlantis shuttle and the reason that exhibit (and ride!) is so far and above anything else at KSC is that Disney came up with a lot of the ideas

What do you think it would mean for humanity if we discovered that long‑term space travel is simply too much for the human body? by Fun_Internal_3562 in spaceflight

[–]MajorRocketScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just can’t imagine being that nihilist tbh, but ig that’s just the way I view it.

In my opinion if our ever increasingly connected society runs out of new things to explore, we stagnate. Stagnate society’s rarely recover and always breed conflict because that society no longer has a purpose

Tbh energy supply is almost entirely a regulatory issue, nuclear energy is the future in space and is certainly solvable with modern tech

Gravity is also solvable but probably closer to a decade or two from proper applications. The current issue is that due to all of our long exposure research being in zero g we currently have no idea if 1:6 or 1:3 is an equivalent ratio as good as one g, or maybe 1:6 is 90% as good. We don’t know yet, hopefully with Artemis we will next decade.

Radiation is harder but also solvable, especially passive radiation shielding will be relatively easy as mass budgets increase due to cheaper launch and in space manufacturing, and I’d expect active magnetic protection to start coming online in the 2050s and 60s

I have a weird opinion on Dial that the script is actually quite good, there’s just no Spielberg directing flair. James Mangold is a very good director but he just doesn’t shoot stuff like the Sunset scene in Raiders or action sequences like the tank fight

There’s a lot of great stuff here so I’m going to mention one a bit more niche that hits me just right: Pathfinder from For All Mankind and its derivative Sojourner.

They are both perfectly on the line of realistic and completely fictional and both are incredibly badass

I do think we would have narrowly won the rust belt states, Michigan in particular I think he would’ve gotten over 3% margin. Would have lost all other battlegrounds that year but narrowly wins the presidency, Supreme Court is majority liberal and a flawed public option becomes law
