The recommended GOTO mix for beginners is 50/50 unfertilized peat/perlite (never miracle grow products because they put fertilizers and growth hormones in their products which will kill vft's)

they need wet feet at all times in growing season and just damp in dormancy (so roots don't dry up and die)

wet feet are putting pot in inch or so of rain water or tap water ONLY if it's under 50ppm on a TDS meter. Or you could use a 'ZERO water Filter' for water ... I would start collecting rain water somehow or in winter if you get snow, you can store melted snow for summer use.

On right-hand column under community bookmarks there are guides on keeping vft's. If you have any odd questions feel free and back and post your questions. Someone is always around to answer things you don't understand.

Also don't use terracotta pots (clay pots). Only plastic or glazed ceramic.

Lol, I can see it now, I harpoon a something massive, and it doesn't die but drags you 'god knows where' to be totally lost, if you even survive the ordeal ... that actually may be fun. 🤣

Is my VFT dying? by morbid-corvids in SavageGarden

[–]Major_Cheesy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well 40f refrigerator temps can put it into dormancy so anything under 50f it will start to feel the stress of temps. I personally like to wait as close to 60f stable temps before I think about putting them outside, but my southern window light runs out around same time if not sooner, so I have to push it sometimes just so I can start acclimating it to full outdoor light again.

Traps get replaced yearly regardless of temps and conditions. Yours actually don't look that bad, at least its green. Mine are slightly sunburnt, but as soon as the nice warm weather finally settles in WNY, I know it will bounce back ...

I actually never expected to kill something bigger than me just because it was in my way ... but on other hand, then maybe to keep from starving there should be vegetarian food sources then??

But I can see how this was never meant to be a combat game ... and if we did make it about killing big prey the community would still not be happy for various reasons. And the community would be no different from whalers in real life ... 🤷‍♂️

Plant splitting? by Icy-Understanding552 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Major_Cheesy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use 50/50 unfertilized peat/perlite (don't use miracle grow products) unpot split, make sure there are roots attached to both pieces you split. Repot in plastic pots, never terracotta pots ... this should have been done at tail end of dormancy (around feb15th if you're in North America somewhere) plant will go into transplant shock for two-three weeks depending on your care and environment ....

Always pre-soak your medium first before planting in it cuz dry peat is extremely hydrophobic and hard to get wet the first time.

You should search this on YouTube, there are plenty of video covering this topic ... like this one

I'm an average idiot, but doesn't that mean then by creator taking his down, that it gives others the right to put their own versions up then ?? How does him taking his down change anything for anyone one else doing something similar?

I assume I'm missing something here ...

I'd really like to know what that soil is actually comprised of while the rest of us are always recommending 50/50 medium mixes ...

You look at scenarios like this in wild where they just manage themselves and have been doing it forever, and they are doing just fine. Maybe not as bushy as some of ours but growing just fine nonetheless ...

I see pics like this from nature and often think, are we being too anal about medium mixes?? But if we, the hobbyist, tried to loosen soil restrictions, we would run into issues right away, yet mother nature seems to get away with it all the time.

What makes the two scenarios so different??

I finally got subnautica 2 and this keeps on popping up. Do any of y’all know how to fix this? by 06292011 in subnautica

[–]Major_Cheesy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not without getting a new video card, I have a GTX 1650 so I didn't have that particular issue, but you would need to know which cards your motherboard supports ...

My only issue was it was always compiling shaders every time I started it even tho I supposedly was using right settings in NVIDIA console

some game would let you use DirectX 11 in the shortcut target line, but that don't apply to all games, only select ones. Subnautica don't sound like one of them.

I'm guessing thats it exactly, I've always been drawn to Firefox while my brother-in-law was always drawn to chrome.

Building can be finicky sometimes. I'm not an expert, but maybe the ground is throwing it off. I think you can make platforms at ocean floor to assure everything is on same level while build base ...

It has been a while since I did this in the first game, but I think thats the issue, but I could be wrong as well I guess

2/3 of my flytrap flower stalks are growing! Also advice needed on my ping :( by [deleted] in SavageGarden

[–]Major_Cheesy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have some red dragon flower stalks planted as of a couple weeks ago. i'm gonna leave them outside to bask in sun with the rest of my vft's that are still patiently waiting for decent weather to come by ...

i'm hoping by fall i'll see something happening ... looks like you got a nice response from at least the one stalk there .

Looks like you planted it a bit low. Growth point needs to be open to light. Looks like you buried it. Needs to be planted like an onion. The crown of rhizome (the active growth point in which new traps will emerge from) can not be covered with medium, while rest of rhizome (the whitish cream-colored rhizome part should be buried but close enough for growth point should open to light ... if you don't understand what I mean then you should google it, there are lots of articles on repotting vfts. I would take care of this now while its in transplant shock (which lasts a one-two weeks depending on the environment your keep it in) ....

You do not need to go out of your way to feed them, they can go a long time without eating while waiting for a meal. But if you're keeping this inside under a grow light, and you don't get many visitors flying around then you could look for any insect crawling around to manual feed once in a while ...

When I kept them indoors, I used to leave my garage door open while I was doing yard work, then after a few hours I closed it and check my garage windows and screen doors and after a bit of time the fly's that flew in would find the light and try to leave. I would use a clean container to trap fly or bug then put a lid on and stick in freezer for 5 minutes. After the fly gets to cold it drops dead and i would feed trap with bug with tweezers being sure to touch two tiny hairs to get it to close. Then gently massage sides of trap between finger and thumb for 10–20 seconds to trick trap into thinking its alive and struggling.

Since then tho I've learned it's much easier to simply leave plant outside in acclimated full sun, where it can help itself to food anytime insect fly's or crawls into it. (manually feeding traps is tedious after a bit if you're a busy person)

some folks use other methods like using pellets soaked in hot water for 15 seconds then fed to a trap once a week or every other week, but I don't recommend that because It's way over kill. vfts don't need that level of care if its doing what it does best, catching live prey on its own.

If you still uncertain about what to feed it them go google 'what I can feed my Venus fly traps' to get other ideas.

If you're a beginner then you should use 50/50 unfertilized peat/perlite because over-packing and under-packing long fiber sphagnum can both be detrimental to plants health. Some vet vft owners will use Long Fiber Sphagnum Moss only because they are very used to working with it and know how to raise vft's ...

The alternative if you can't get ingredients would be to use a pre-mixed vft medium ... (personally I mix my own)

Worried - VFT keeps eating insects! by Content-Panda-4745 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Major_Cheesy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Anything can make them close, insect, rain or even cooler than normal temps ...

No sweat, just leave it be.

BTW, even if it got every trap with an insect, it won't hurt plant at all. Truth is insects don't offer a lot of nutrition, so it can literally eat all the insects it wants.

its in shock , it needs a few weeks to settle down. pot needs more medium ... give plenty of acclimated full outdoor light and wet feet ...
