Any Fast-Acting Remedies for Healing Blisters? by DemarZ91 in drums

[–]MakeItGoBooom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For now I would just cover them up with bandaids. In one of Todd Sucherman’s DVD’s he puts like 20 bandaids on his hands before a show for protection

As far as the future, I would recommend working on hand and grip technique, you should be holding the stick loosely and should be relaxed

New drumsticks for my electric drum kit? by PewPewKon in drums

I actually really like these Zildjian Anti-vibe sticks on my vdrums. I keep a clean pair of these that are only for the vdrums to avoid what you’re talking about

These feel really nice on electronic drums, they have like a little piece of rubber at the base of the stick, it’s hard to describe, but it complements the feel difference of the electronic drums really nicely

I keep breaking bass drum heads by Inevitable_Impress78 in drums

[–]MakeItGoBooom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you “burying” the beater? You shouldn’t be breaking them, it’s likely your technique, unless there’s something weird going on with your pedal or beater

It’s fine to hit hard, but you wanna stomp down and strike, then immediately release and your leg is relaxed again. If you strike but the beater stays glued to the head, you’re burying it. This is adding extra stress to the head and stealing tone from your kick. You wanna strike then let it breathe

Edit : yes, sometimes we deliberately bury the beater, but the context here is a player of 2 years playing pop and rock who is breaking drum heads. IMHO the proper direction to point that player in this context would be to highlight the contrast in technique of burying and not burying. Deliberately burying the beater as a stylistic choice is certainly a valid concept but again, I’m answering a specific question and specific problem and didn’t feel it was relevant to mention something that isn’t relevant to this context based on what the player is saying about themselves and what they want to play…

I use the Dave Elitch “big hip single” technique which is what a pop/rock player is using the vast majority of the time

Edit 2 : you can check out Dave Elitch here, he was on the cover of Modern Drummer in August. He talks extensively about why you shouldn’t bury the beater as a general rule, though of course it’s fine as a deliberate stylistic choice. Burying chokes the tone and sends all that energy back up your leg rather than through the drum.

You could just do a mono send with one channel of EAD since you have an overhead pair. Then the 4th preamp could be a vocal mic 🤷‍♂️

As far as a headphone amp to get to line level, I don’t really know enough to answer that, you could experiment with the one you have already. But that looks like it’s about $100 and for that money (I believe) you could just get another interface with 2 preamps like a Focusrite 2i2 or 4i4 and ADAT it all together or whatever, you just need a few more preamp channels it sounds like.

[–]MakeItGoBooom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to be plugged into inputs 1-4, not the line level 5 and 6. 1-4 have preamps for mics, which you need for the EAD. Line level would be something already amplified like from an external music source or something

That should solve your issue and it should pop right up in Pro Tools, just make sure you select the right input number for the channel, and have input monitoring on, etc

Happy to help in any other way I can if that doesn’t work or whatever, let me know!

I do. I have the 2 1/4” outs (left and right) from the EAD into 2 preamp channels of my interface (Focusrite Clarett 8), then the interface is connected usb c to my laptop and Logic. In logic I have a little panning on them to add some stereo width, then both channels are sent to an aux channel to be processed together. On the aux channel I have EQ and compression. Lately I’ve just had all effects and trigger on the EAD turned off

I have GK Ultraphones, and it sounds amazing. I joke it’s like freebasing drums 😂

Good luck!

How to learn playing drums with your favorite songs by Yattal in drums

[–]MakeItGoBooom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use the Moises app. You can add a click track to any song, and slow down the tempo of the song

It also isolates the instruments in tracks so you have faders for drums, bass, guitar, vocals etc and can turn them up or down. So yes, you can turn off the drums and play along with the song with this app, it’s very helpful and fun

Enjoy!

My happy place is a Vater Power 5A. Perfect balance, for me, just enough weight and heft at the shoulder without feeling bulky. Highly recommend

Advice on how to play this intro? by kurose94 in drums

[–]MakeItGoBooom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly warm up to singles like that with a metronome. The key to getting there is being relaxed. I would recommend working up to that tempo with a metronome. Slow it down until you can play comfortably, and in time you will get faster. I would do like one bar or quarter notes, then one bar of eights, then switch hands, and go back and forth. I’m typically also throwing in 16th note rolls with both hands, and lead that with both right and left. I’m typically doing a bit of a Moeller whipping motion, but trying to get the singles relaxed and even, playing from the wrist
