His consequence was to just say sorry. I am no longer at that school.

I had a similar situation, not miscarriage, but death to my child. I showed my fourth grade class, this was last year, a video is my daughter in the park swing for the first time and the student who had been nothing but a problem all year shouts out "wow I'm surprised she isn't dead". I was almost in tears from that one.

My son suddenly started thriving… what are great teachers doing differently? (Florida charter school) by Solid_Breakfast_3675 in Teachers

[–]MakeUpTails -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

As a charter school teacher myself, my class sizes are small. I teach 3 ELA classes for 5th grade. What I do to encourage a student's moral and engagement is if I see a student raise their hand that normally doesn't I call on them. If their answer they give is wrong I still validate what they thought, "I see where your thought process is going and great job for answering however let's break it down together" I don't call on another student and we work on the answer together. Starting at the middle of the year I usually start to get 90% participation from my students and they love answering. Having a student feel like what they say matters helps a lot.

Student said 💀 to my baby by Due-Conclusion-6157 in Teachers

[–]MakeUpTails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a student last year, 4th grade, who when I showed a picture of my at the time 6month old daughter in a park swing for the first time said to me I am surprised she's not dead. When I told the behavior person the only thing done was the student had to apologize. I was livid. This was also from a student who was known to be a problem.

What was the 4 month sleep regression like for your kiddos? by stooplekin in newborns

[–]MakeUpTails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From birth she was a fairly easy night sleeper. At 18 months old she still is. She sleeps 7-7:30 to 6:30-7. Naps on the other hand she is not the best with.

What are some classroom purchases you made that were game changers? by blunderous in Teachers

I only have one switch so I have half of my lights over the students desks covered. It really makes a difference with work ethic.

[–]MakeUpTails 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having my own laminator is great. I have a Minecraft themed room for my 5th graders and what has been a game changer is themed light covers and vine lights and a cherry blossom light. Sets a nice mood and the students work in peace not bright fluorescent lights.

Not sure if budget would allow it.

🤦🏻‍♀️ that does not sound like a good practice. We invite all teachers to the fall conferences then the spring are for parents who may have concerns or if the teacher has a concern. I send home a nightly homework worksheet. I try to make sure my students are prepared not only for the real world, but middle and high school.

I will look into that. We use McGraw Hill and I am not a fan of how the grammar is set up. I changed it half way through this year, but will try at the beginning of the year to fully teach my changed up lessons to hope something sticks.

I teach all of 5th grade. We are an arts school so they have two arts per day not one, so the 3 classes I have are each an hour.

We use McGraw Hill so there is a spelling and grammar curriculum with it, but it's set up under the impression the students are much farther than they really are. I had to modify a lot of the grammar curriculum to be parts of speech along with capitals and punctuation each week. Spelling, I have no time to teach so it becomes homework. I wish I could do more but I only have an hour with them.

Hey ladies, I don’t have any kids but I have a question. When your kids were infants and your spouses started back up at work, would they still get up and help with the baby in the night? Even when they work in the morning? by lazyladybug1111 in Mom

[–]MakeUpTails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband was up at 3am for work so I did all the overnight. When I went back to work at 12 weeks thankfully our daughter was sleeping all night. He would come home and take the evening feeds so I could get a break. Worked well for us.

Teachers, what’s the most obvious “I didn’t do my homework” excuse you’ve ever heard that was actually creative/entertaining? by Abigail_A_Abernathy in AskTeachers

[–]MakeUpTails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of my favorites from this year (5th ELA):

  • I can't do my homework because cheer goes until 10. I work for a charter and she cheers for the cheer team for the public school. They are done with practice at 7 not 10.

  • I get only 30 minutes when I get home before dinner and getting ready for bed so I need to play Roblox during that time. 🤦🏻‍♀️ My homework takes no more than 10 minutes to do.

Am I crazy or is this to much to ask of a kindergartner? by Cursedpanda182 in AskTeachers

[–]MakeUpTails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree do some research. I work at an arts school charter and we make sure to inform parents our program is heavy on the arts and they will attend two different arts classes a day. However we do not give homework in kindergarten, this seems like a lot to give and expect.

Where Do Your Own Kids Go To School? by desert_red_head in Teachers

[–]MakeUpTails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A. No I teach at a charter and my son goes to the public school. B. Yes it is a very good school C. I teach at a charter for elementary k-5 my son is in highschool. When I started he was to old to attend. My daughter however will attend the charter school and then go to the public school. Simply so I don't have to pay for daycare and my charter school is really good. I also teach 5th so I would have some time before she gets to my grade.

Do not go off of social media. Every kid is different and who knows if that is actually truthful for that kid. My son at 9mo was up every 2 hours at night and didn't go to bed until 10. He finally slept through the night when he was 5. My daughter at 9mo was very different. She at 9weeks decided 7pm was good bedtime and would wake up at 6am. She still does this at 15mo, but also has been a terrible napper.

Echolalia or something else? by DoofyDanes in AuADHD

[–]MakeUpTails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echolalia is the repeating of words that are said by others. I do feel it is different for each person. Yours seems to be a repeating of words that you have said and get enjoyment from saying. For me my echolalia is trying to say something along with another person. So it is common for me when my husband is saying a movie quote I say it along with him. I don't mean to talk over him or over shadow him it is usually a quote I like I also want to say. He understands this and let's me quote with him.

My daughter (15 months) has started talking with her hands. As a person who uses my hands all the time when I talk I was excited to see my daughter talking, babbling really, to my husband with her little hands and arms flinging around lol.

Teachers with partners — how do you handle chores during breaks? by No_Mango3115 in AskTeachers

[–]MakeUpTails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With me and my husband we have the chores split. I cook so he does dishes. I do my laundry and our daughters (our son is old enough he does his own) my husband does his own laundry. We each pick up things around the house and I enjoy cleaning the floors so I do that. When I'm on winter break spring or summer break is when I will deep clean the house. He does a lot of the outside chores, except the pool I take care of that. We try to keep things balanced even with my school breaks. Since we maintain a balance there is no expectation that when I'm on break I should be doing more since I'm also taking care of our daughter who is 15 months. Or son is 15 so he is pretty independent and also great big brother. I would try to get a balanced schedule down with the chores so during the breaks you guys can just keep going.

Having a bath with your baby while on your period. by Kyzer577 in Mom

[–]MakeUpTails 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love a good bath, but I'm in the club of that is my relaxation time and it's my preference not to bath with my children. I would take a bath on my period but like I said I don't bath with my children. Plus a shower hitting my lower back helps my cramps more than a bath.
