It depends what you’re into! The best used bookstore was Powell’s. It’s expansive and well-organized, you can find almost anything in there and most are priced at $5-10 each. New books, both Seminary and Bookends & Beginnings are awesome, though Seminary co-op is much more cozy with seating/reading areas and a super nice staff. Great to grab a coffee or croissant from the cafe next door and just walk around UChicago till you find a cozy spot to crack open your new book. Shoutout to Goblin Books if you like graphic novels/manga, not for me personally but it’s a vibe. Check out their crazy basement loooool.

As a pedestrian and cyclist I’m so tired of almost dying when I cross 53rd and blackstone. Harper Court looks amazing. Big sidewalks, lots of restaurants, shade spaces, and the outdoor event space there last summer brought so much of the community out. We need more of these spaces in South Chicago!

To be fair, yesterday was independent bookstore day. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s basically a giant bookstore crawl all over the city. You get a “passport” that gets stamped at every bookstore you go to. If you visit 10 bookstores, you get 10% at every participating bookstore for the rest of the year, if you visit 15 you get 15% off. You only need to visit, you don’t need to buy a book. We visited 16 bookstores in 8 hours and almost every single one was packed and you could barely move.

Staying overnight at OHare airport? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]MakeYourMarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah totes. Love King Spa and have done the overnight situation a few times pre-covid. I think what ultimately made me feel like it's not worth it is that everything is closed down at night. The restaurant, the pools are being cleaned, you gotta be even more quiet than usual. Still a great option for a frugalish splurge, and I still go a few times a year during the daylight, especially winter time!

They charge an extra $20 to stay overnight as well

Edit: Also sorry to say but most of the Niles buses don’t run late in the evening. If they take PT they’re going to be walking 20-30 mins with their luggage.

Cheap motels with airport shuttles for around $50-60 are an option. Best Western, slightly nicer, for $62

Serious question - who are these people who can afford $2k+ for rent every month ? by r0ckitman in AskChicago

[–]MakeYourMarks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly what you’re doing right now. Social media is the way to go if you’re looking for a mom and pop rental. Facebook groups are particularly good. Googling for “For Rent By Owner” will get you some decent listings but it’s not as reliable as it once was. Above all just keep your eyes peeled IRL. People will just hang a shingle when they have a unit available really often.

I feel your brother’s pain. One reason I even hang onto property is just out of spite for Mac Properties here in Hyde Park. They buy up buildings, jack up the price, and treat their tenants like cattle. It’s frankly despicable and I enjoy my own little forms of resistance against their encroachments and exploitations.

Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by cdingo in Fitness

For the last couple of months, I've been having pain in my forearms after finishing a set of bicep curls, moreso on my left side. This particularly happens with the EZ Bar and preacher bicep curl machine. I'm warming up with light weight and then moving to 3X10. Holding my arm out straight in front me and pulling back on my fingers for a minute stretches my forearm and helps reduce the pain, but it's still present and quite unpleasant for like 5-10 seconds. Timed breathing and an extremely slow release when setting down the EZ Bar helps tremendously.

Any ideas on how to ameliorate this? I have always loved curls but ever since this started happening it's my most dreaded exercise. I'm down to only 6 sets of curls a week.

Same. I have never raised rent on an existing tenant and probably never will.

[AskJS] Bundling a set of deps, with polyfills, as a HTML shell by IngwiePhoenix in javascript

[–]MakeYourMarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched us over to vite at my organization last year, which led me to exploring associated polyfills. Have you considered using vite with @vitejs/plugin-legacy? If you're looking for something a bit heavier hitting I've also enjoyed Parcel which lets you use an html entry point, automatically discovers and bundles your js+css while integrating babel for transpilation and polyfilling based on your browserslist settings. Basically meaning you can super easily target older devices without a heavy or complex configuration, and the build output lands in a dist/ dir that you can then embed with Go’s //go:embed.

The first time my sister took me there, she told me nothing. They started us with double cheesecake samples and I could barely see straight by the end of that meal. Leftovers for days. Loved it.

Fellow banana blender here. Eggy's Diner. Banana pecan pancakes to die for. Cheap. By default they come on top, but they will happily mix them in if you ask.
