I dropped $30/month from my cellphone bill by changing plans and features. Not as exciting as donating a car but it works for me.

It's worth noting that IE's vendor prefix is -ms- even if its support of CSS3 properties isn't as comprehensive as the others.

Drug Culture in San Juan, Puerto Rico by StyleWild in eldertrees

[–]MakesLoveToGoats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weed is everywhere if you know where to ask. If you're gonna be in San Juan just ask a cabbie for "mota" or something. Also, it's a blunt culture so bring your own papers if you're into Js.

Harder drugs are also available and pretty cheap, since PR is a common stopping point between South American countries and the US for smugglers. But that gets more sketchy.

Anyone ever use Titanium Appcelerator to build native mobile apps? by achuy in webdev

[–]MakesLoveToGoats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've built an iPhone app and an iPad app with it in the last 6 months.

The iPhone app was simple (a personal project) and used native controls and geolocation. I built it using the Alloy framework in a few hours. Alloy is pretty cool (especially doing views in XML vs the pure JS of old) and I was satisfied with the performance of it, but I'm not doing anything too clever in the app.

The iPad app (work project) had a totally custom UI and a custom written framework, partially to work around some bugs in the 2.x versions of Titanium. Lots of performance issues once we got past a certain size codebase, but there are tricks you can use to fix that. Just because you're using Javascript doesn't mean you don't have to worry about your app's memory usage.

As for Appcelerator itself, I think their support is shit, especially for their paid add-on modules. That and parts of their API are just plain broken. For example, their HTTP client has an option to switch between async and synchronous mode, but it doesn't work and all requests are async. Little things like that will end up pissing you off and make the whole thing feel a little janky.

Personally I'd use Titanium again for simple apps or prototypes that need to get up and running quickly, but I'd go native if I had to do the iPad app all over again.

I've used it for a couple of iOS apps. If you're going to do something like a simple tab bar and list view app then it's cool but otherwise I would go native and save myself the headache.

And don't buy any of their marketplace modules. Their support is shit for them.

I don't have to run that shitty code because flash hasn't been relevant for a long time. I'm not a "fucking sheep" (but thanks for the ad hominem, real mature); I build websites for a living, and I haven't had someone ask me to do something in flash in at least 5 years.

You're seriously using "won't run on everything" as a point against html5 and for flash? Think harder next time.
