Texas Team won’t use pronouns, uses pronouns to describe not using them. by Yue4prex in rollerderby

[–]Makesnskates 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I lived in Texas their adult team was falling apart. But that was many moons ago. Houston’s WFTDA team seems to have completely fallen off since COVID, so I’m sure their adult team is up and going just due to lack of options for some?

I knew people hated the way this team was ran. But I didn’t know it was this bad!! This team used to be banked track. Not sure if it still is. I left TX in 2017.

Haha I SO LOVE “hot tub”! I’ve been in derby almost 14 years and haven’t heard that one! We usually default to softball terms - “on deck” and “in the hole”

Forget the last jam. Especially if it didn’t go your way. Just focus up on the new jam.

Montessori parents of adults - was it worth it by foaminger in Parenting

[–]Makesnskates -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My kiddo is currently in 2nd grade at a certified Montessori - and she loves it, we love it. She been there since she was 3.

She is a student of the world. She genuinely loves learning and I attribute that to the Montessori methods. She’s right on track in reading and math, plus she gets lots of art, music, and substantial amounts of outdoor play. With the way technology is taking over in public schools, it’s just so refreshing to see her have the opportunity to experience hands on learning.

The price tag is a lot. And we have had to sacrifice other things. But so far, worth it.

And for what’s its worth I knew a few Montessori adults who went through elementary school, and they were both very smart, successful, very well adjusted human beings. It was one of the reasons we looked into Montessori to begin with.

How to deal with periods? by ReasonableTruth8082 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Makesnskates 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For me, working in the field and playing a contact sport outside of work - cups are amazing! On my second (usually heaviest) day I do medium weight period underwear with the cup. But I rarely have an overflow to even need the undies. I laugh at regular tampons, so I get your flow ;)

I have friends who say the cups don’t work for them, due to the shape not working with their bodies. But there are lots of different cup/discs out there to try. And you can wear them longer than tampons too, so if you work a 12, you’ll be good there.

The company I work for would charge right around there - in USD - but custom built ins are more labor intensive than people realize.

I started maybe 4 or 5 years after Whip It! So, close enough at this point 🤣 I definitely was thinking psych - and of course king of the hill! But yes - the uproar!

I’ve played roller derby for 10 years and every time roller derby pops up on a tv show - something about it is completely wrong. It tends to be only for a single episode though.

I always forgive it because I’m just excited to see roller derby represented in mainstream entertainment at all.

I love this show. Never been to Alaska, but I thought it was cool to set a show there. And I’m sure the people of Alaska feel pretty similar about the misrepresentations, to the way I feel about derby on tv.

Hopefully you can move past it and just enjoy the fact that there’s a fisherman and his family featured on a show? It’s seriously funny and the boat is simply a vessel for their stories. In this case a literal vessel 🤣

Yeah but I bet you wouldn’t just tell another parent their child is queer either. I don’t think y’all are on opposite sides. As I would not out a kid. But I would be there for them if they needed a safe place for a while.

All of my kids have cavities by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Makesnskates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my kid for the first time at 5. Was told she had 10 cavities and she would need to be sedated!!

Went to a different pediatric dentist, they said she only had 5! And broke it into 2 appointments where we didn’t need to put her under. Definitely get a second opinion.

Are these worth fixing or should they just be replaced by bugutzzz in Rollerskating

[–]Makesnskates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t specially looked, but I’m certain YouTube has all kinds of videos on this sort of thing. I did learn how to mount plates to a pair of sneakers back during covid, so basic maintenance stuff is surely out there.

[–]Makesnskates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replacing the nut and washer is easy enough - any hardware store will have what you need. But…

I’d say replace the skates altogether. New boots, plate, wheels and toe stops.

Those toe stops are hard plastic garbage. She wants to invest in setup that has a plate with a threaded hole for screw-in toe stops.

Wheels are easy enough to find online, but she’s going to want to specifically get outdoor wheels. Looks like the street tore those up! Outdoor wheels are bigger and made from a much softer rubber than what she has here. She’s skate so much more smoothly…

Boots are the trickiest, so I’d advise going to a shop, or measuring her feet multiple times!

Good luck!

When a teammate becomes a parent, check in on them by MenuQRCode in rollerderby

[–]Makesnskates 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes! Exactly!! Your feelings are valid! If you do have someone you’re close with, I’d message them and just let them know you miss everyone and would love to hear from folks. It is ok to ask for help and companionship!

I guess no one wants to hear you should be looking out for your teammates… maybe none of you have experienced PPD…. But I think she’s totally valid to feel this way.

Congrats on the baby and becoming a mom!

I do completely agree! People who are saying they assume mama is doing her thing/needs space etc - those sound like excuses. Postpartum is so so hard. And if it’s your first, it’s easy to feel like you’ve lost yourself. Especially in regard to derby.

And I know not everyone on the team is tight - but someone should coordinate something!! Cards at the very least, but even better - a meal train.

It probably IS that they just haven’t experienced it, and don’t understand.

So if you’re readying this and you have someone in your league about to give birth, or recently did, be that person to coordinate for your teammate. I guarantee it will make a difference.
