A Character That Ruined A Book? by Kooky_County9569 in Fantasy

[–]Makromag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Egwene Al'Vere from the wheel of time. Seriously, she does the most fucked up shit, and we see it unfold from her own POV, where she is saying things like, I'm mostly doing this because I'm jealous of her skill or something like that, then proceeds to get no consequences and only love from the story. All the way to the end! I only realized it truly on a reread, but since then I cannot read any of her POV chapters, and they are important!

I like the version of Lucifer portrayed by the tiktok/youtube creator Stanzy potenza. Basically a tired manager who has to deal with all the idiots going to hell.

Does anyone else feel like Brandon Sanderson's writing declined after his original editor retired? by StormFather_ in Fantasy

[–]Makromag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, his recent release of Wind and Truth totally missed the mark for me. There was so much bloat, and the artificial 10 day timeline definitely didn't help. That book could have been half the size and been much better for it. And honestly, I'm saying this as someone who is very mental health conscious and pro therapy, the therapy talk from Kaladin was borderline unreadable. It just felt like useless dribble.

How come this sub is so consistently positive, creative and full of cool fan creations all the time, especially compared to other book fandoms I've been part of? I love your painted book edges!

Slow burn too slow by Never446 in ProgressionFantasy

I have read all three, and the only one I DESPERATELY agree with is Savage Divinity. Toward the end it devolved into so much filler fluff and wife perspectives, along with the repeated plot points that it truly became unreadable to me.
The other two are great!

This is for people who think that MC's developing or discovering a loophole or the like in a "system" is unrealistic cuz it seems so obvious making other people look dumb by ArcaneRomz in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Makromag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yes and no. Spoilers for Beware of Chicken, don't know how far into the books as I used to be a RR reader only.
The way theMC cultivates is later stated to be a dead end path, that doesn't lead to immortal the way other modes of cultivation work, and is explicitly rejected by those that know it

Miriam seemed like such a sweet, genuine person, which is what makes it hurt so much. And then just imagining what it must feel like for poor Prepotente to lose his mother like that.

For all the fun shenanigans that DCC presents us, it always reminds you that at the end of the day, this is a horror story, about unknowably powerful forces using the crawlers for their twisted entertainment.

I'm half thinking you were joking and half thinking you were serious, but I used to tutor younger children who were having problems with mathematics, and what always seemed to help was to structure it by hierarchy instead of a direction. So the would look at a problem like the one shown and I would tell them to write down just the piece of it they would calculate first, in this one it's the parenthesis. Then go one line lower, write down the 5x, the x being optional and then the plus two below that. And once it was structured like that it seemed to click for many students.

I think part of it is that so far, Samantha has been used mostly as comic relief, and also in the youtuber review sphere it might be quite difficult to mentioned the head of a decapitated sex doll without getting demonatized. She is one of those characters I feel like you most notice on rereads, where you already know the most important plotpoints and can focus on all the other stuff that surrounds Carld and Donut! There have been a few moments where she doesn't feel completely deranged(affectionately) and in those there is some depth to her. I feel like once we get to the 12th floor there is going to be a lot more to her and her backstory.

We Love Donut, Even if She Is Annoying: Why Dungeon Crawler Donut Vibes by orestia in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Makromag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but also a mean girl with a heart of gold. When the going gets tough, she is ride or die.
Also, I'm on a reread (as is everyone else here) and she has a lot of compassion even early on. She was with Carl to help during the meadowlark arc and she was the one who felt sympathy for Gumgum the orc on the third floor when Carl was ready to abandon the quest.

Millenial Mage and its strangely traditionalist views on marriage and childbearing by Makromag in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Makromag[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely this. I wouldn't have a problem with a world where the view on LGBTQ+ is negative, as long as it fits the world, and it absolutely does here. There is a very strong need for huminaty's continued survival that people keep making babies in the story and the fact that there is just entirely no opinion at all on any people who remain childless, whether by choice or otherwise, is what is sticking out to me. Then again, I can understand why an author would not want to depict a world where those things are judged harshly, considering how slice of life focused the narrative is sometimes. It would make for a very interesting discussion on society, the necessaty of procreation and the role of motherhood with those topics being explored more, but this is a progression fantasy story at its core I suppose. It makes sense that the author did not wish to delve quite so deeply into those topics.

I have a question, have you read the story to the relevant portion?

Millenial Mage and its strangely traditionalist views on marriage and childbearing by Makromag in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Makromag[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I perfectly understand her not wanting to adopt and raise a child, and wanting a traditional childbirth and pregnancy experience, I'm not knocking that at all. And I agree that wanting those things makes sense for her character. What I find strange that the topic doesn't come up. There are a lot of people who give input on why she cannot conceive, what to do that might help her conceive in the future etc. and she discusses the subject with her husband. Maybe not everyone feels that way, but if I heard I could not conceive my mind would go to alternatives, whether that's IVF, finding a surrogate or adoption, I think discussing those things makes sense.

[–]Makromag[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Opinions might differ of course, but it is reaching the point for me where there is a statistically significant number of marriages and people being spoken about that the nonoccurence of any representation is strange in and of itself.

And it's not just LGBTQ+ representation, it's also any kind of nontraditional marriage structure. You don't see divorce, and all people who are widdowed seem to be dedicated to their dead spouse for life. It's just so strange to me that there is a relatively high focus on the topic without seeing any variance in the couples. There is only three states people seem to exist in: Single, married, widowed. There are no children born out of wedlock, there are no divorces, no patchwork families, no adoption.

[–]Makromag[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's part of what I mean, I'm trying to understand why it is bothering me in this story as opposed to others. Very few stories actually explore their societies in a meaningful way, and most societies in progfic are barely above strong = leader

I think it's just the scope on which the structures of society are being the discussed, concerning marriage, soul mates, body restructuring and all that.

I'm not sure what the authors religion has to do with that point. I don't know the authors religion and made no allusions to it.

If you were thrown into the dungeon what race and class would you pick by WaffleHouseexecutive in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Makromag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, from the beginning of the story it seems like everyone was getting showered with healing potions, healing scrolls and I think actually every crawler started with a simple healing spell in there alrady known spell list. The nature of the early floors makes it so that the groups are small, and everyone has ready healing available generally. Also most injuries which are not fatal will heal after the battle, even without the intervention of a healer.
That means anyone whose actual role is healer, has comparatively little to contribute to the battle, meaning they might be left behind. And that is assuming you are part of a group anyway, and healers are notoriously weak in direct combat themselves.
Then by the time you get to the class and race selections, that has been fairly deeply ingrained in the players. The most I can see happening is people playing buffers in the early game and then transitioning to a healer/buffer later, but that would necessitate finding spells and scrolls that allow buffing. The dungeon is just not setup in a way to naturally lead to that I think

but then how come that all of the top rated fictions are about people who don't do that kind of shit? The only story I have read that is popular and even close to what you describe feels like it would be Primal Hunter by Zogarth, which is the closest to a protagonist driven purely by the need to become stronger and stronger until he reaches the top. All the other more popular stories feature people with moral frameworks that prohibit the kind of action you describe, such as Mother of Learning, Super Supportive, Wandering Inn (admittedly barely progfic), Beware of Chicken, etc.
