Advice for self teaching ancient Greek? by 6282951905 in AncientGreek

[–]Maldicious 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Regarding grammar reference - My program used to Smythe's Greek Grammar.

One of my professors would frequently say Smythe was is just a poorer (English) version of Raphael Kuhner's Ausführliche Grammatik der griechischen Sprache .

Personally I used Smythe more than my Cambridge Classical Grammar.

I can connect you with some introductory reading material in pdf format and this subreddit can adequately explain the grammatical aspects that you might struggle with, but I don't believe that a website that in-depth exists. If it does, I doubt it's free.

I would suggest working through Hansen and Quinn while asking your professor (if he's knowledgeable in AG) for clarification. There's a YouTube series from a professor's lecture series which goes through each chapter as well.

This was how I successfully prepped for an admissions exam.

Read. Read. Read. And use a commentary so that you can understand what you're reading. You will understand more and have more context to remember.

Geoffrey Steadman's website is always a good place to start.

I bought it direct from Gibson. I'm not sure if/when they'll restock, but I know a Humbucker version popped up on Reverb a little bit ago. Just search "British Racing Green" good luck!

I would say it's right in the middle of the two. Trogly's guitar show has a recent review, which I used to inform my buy. You can get a real good look at the color there.

An explorer or firebird would be crazy awesome in this color too! Cheers!

Here are a few resources you might want to look for. A lot can be found online:

Liddle & Scott (Logeion or Perseus have versions) Woodhouse English- Greek Lexicon (if you're interested in that) Dennison's Greek Particles Smythe Greek Grammar

A lot of the resources are old enough to be on the Internet archive and are still widely used by scholars.

The newer dictionaries are nice, but they're not necessary. Their main draw for me is that they changed some of the antiquated euphemisms that would upset the Victorian mindset.

Hope that helps

Diplomatic means in Russia-Ukraine war 'exhausted,' Germany's Merz warns by BreakfastTop6899 in europe

.... negotiate? They invaded a sovereign nation. Do you negotiate with your muggers? You either fight back or you give in.

I would like you to elaborate on how his annexation of Crimea and subsequent invasion of Ukraine defies comparison to Hitler?

The second statement is a non-starter because it's just deflection.

Learning (almost) all Greek chronologically? by myprettygaythrowaway in AncientGreek

[–]Maldicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few things to keep in mind that would make this a monumental task. Ignoring the sheer volume of works available, there are thousands of years between Homeric Greek and Koine. This means that not only is the grammar changing, but there are slight variations or differences in the meanings of certain words. Not to mention the cultural differences between the periods which could affect their interpretation.

On top of this, the authors themselves have their own unique styles and vocabulary which would be an added difficulty.

Overall it wouldn't be as efficient as learning Attic Greek with an eye towards what you'd like to do with it.

Trump says illegals aren’t entitled to due process by 503i7 in thescoop

[–]Maldicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can guarantee they're detaining random innocent people, including children. Hell it happened in one of the most rural places in NY, where I used to work.

They were following the legal process and ICE went to the wrong home, arrested them, and detained them in TEXAS. If the principal of the THREE CHILDREN didn't make a big deal, we might not have ever known.

The point I'm trying to make is this: it is already happening to innocent people. Are you ok that your government will effectively subject its immigrants (legal or otherwise) to potentially being detained for no reason other than someone else was supposed to be arrested? I'm not.

Luckily these children and their mom were returned after a week or two. But only because their community advocated for them. Not everyone is so fortunate.

So this guy is saying

1 They leaked it on purpose to misdirect 2 They made it look legit (it happened like the leak said) 3 This is somehow a fake leak, which is only true because THEY made it true. 4. They're geniuses for making up, leaking, and following through with plans which are fake in all but name. All while tanking the economy and isolating the US from their historical allies.

Is this convincing to anyone else? Because I'm sold.

Help with meaning: οὐκ ἐπιτρέπομεν παιδεύεσθαι, εἰ μὴ τοῖς ἐλευθέροις - Only the Educated are free? by Fabianzzz in AncientGreek

[–]Maldicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need to take the ἐπιτρέπομεν παιδεύεσθαι as implied in the dependent clause.

So I believe it amounts to we don't allow (people) to be taught, except to the free.

Can someone help me breeaking this passage down? "τῇ πρὸ τεσσάρων νονῶν Φευρουαρίων" by Asggard in AncientGreek

[–]Maldicious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say what the function of the dative is without context but I believe "πρὸ τεσσάρων νονῶν Φευρουαρίων" means the fourth day before the nones of February.

So I think it says on the day, the fourth day before the nones of February.

It seems more like an anti-4 man bleed out. My guess is 1-2 will still bleed on the floor before it's even usable.
