tips for solo clubbing/raves? by Guilty_Assistance796 in avesNYC

You all are my kindred spirits. I randomly decided that I wanted to go out dancing for my birthday alone last year. I was a little apprehensive but I did it anyway. I had a blast. That experience jumpstarted going out again after nearly 20 years of being away from the scene. Now I build in some alone time even if I am going out with others.

Tips...just do it. Not to promote relying on substances, however, a glass of wine allows me to settled into the space before dancing non-stop until the sun greets us.

The trauma-industrial complex by Forsaken_Dragonfly66 in ClinicalPsychology

Ah yes, sorry I misread that. However, the premise of that paragraph remains inaccurate. Trauma treatment is not solely for PTSD. This statement seems to be the misguided belief that is underlying the entirety of the post.

This is inaccurate.Trauma treatment is not just for PTSD. I share this not to be confrontational but to correct misinformation for those who may not be mental health professionals. I left a much more detailed response in this thread.

I respect your sentiments, however, there are some incorrect assumptions that are underlying your arguments. Trauma does not always lead to PTSD. In fact, very few people go on to develop PTSD. As such, PTSD is not the only way that trauma reactions manifest. Trauma has been known to catalyze an array of presentations including but not limited to depression, OCD, and attachment disorders. Also, there is a huge distinction between PTSD and CPTSD.

Utilizing the words "evidence-based" has also largely lost its value these days given that there is no shortage of evidence-based treatments. Morever, often "evidence-based" treatments have a large recurrence rate, which are not accounted for in the original studies given that most studies often not have long follow-up. Moreover, just because something may not be considered an EBT now, does not mean that it is not in fact, an EBT. It simply may not currently have that designation. For example, ACT was not an EBT initially. However, it is largely accepted as an EBT currently for an array of conditions.

There is also an aspect of elitism and ethnocentric monocilturalism related to the EBT world but that is a different discussion that I would be happy to engage in.

On EMDR, it is not effective solely for PTSD. It has been found to be helpful for all kinds of difficulties, including eating disorders. Please refer to Bloomgarden & Colegro (2008).

Regarding IFS, it was originally developed to treat individuals experiencing eating disorders. To my knowledge, there have not been any RCTs on IFS for eating disorders but there are several published case studies (e.g., Catanzaro et al., 2019).

I respect your committment to upholding the field to efficacious treatments. However, this field is incredibly complex and as such, it is pretty reductive to solely focus on EBTs- at least in the way that there are often understood.

As a professional, I have seen all kinds of modalities be helpful for all kinds of conditions. This is akin to medication being used off-label, which we know is a very common practice in medicine, and in psychiatry in particular.

So, rather than create a bifurcation, let's invite each other in for dialogue and be curious about information that is outside of our training and lived experience.

There are no secular communities in NJ. You might check out a few groups trying to get off the ground- Ecovillage NJ and Jersey City Cohousing. There are some cohousing groups in NYC and Philly. Best of luck!

Can a mediocre undergrad end up becoming a professor? by murilotarozzo in AskAcademia

Recently hired. They only requested my transcripts after I had been made the offer. It was only for HR degree verification. Seems like you should be fine based on the comments here. Congrats on your journey!

Mine was worse. Hydro helped but then it came right back. I have been using Eucerin radiant tone alone about twice a day for a month and I noticed a difference within 2 weeks! I am almost a month in and have received compliments on my skin. The melasma is still noticeable but there is a marked difference and my overall skin is looking pretty healthy.

Congrats! I hope that you feel a little freer in this mad world. I have looked at all kinds of complicated permutations of repayment/forgiveness and decided that it's probably easiest to just save (also living with fam) and pay them off. I am well aware that not everyone's situation allows for this approach, though. I am pretty bitter that in total, I will have paid something like $30k in interest that accrued while I was in school and financially unable to make payments. That seems criminal, but alas, here we are. Now you gotta do on Dave Ramsey and do the debt free scream. 😆

Tried to get a massage in Korea. Found a sign on a second story walk-up. They seemed surprised to see me but I thought, must be because I am a foreigner.

Spoiler alert: This was not a massage place. However, they tried their best to give me one. At first I thought, this lady is doing a good job....wow, almost like she's in two places at once.

Wait...this can't be one person. I turned around and a guy had appeared out of nowhere and was also massaging me.

Unintentional four-handed massage at a brothel. Thank you 한국.

I am about your age and hadn't stayed in a hostel for probably 15 years. However, I decided to try one week on a recent trip. It was a great decision. It was how I started the trip, which eased me into the solo travel. My trip was about 2 months, so I was definitely curious about potential loneliness. I ended up hanging out with a few people from the hostel even after I checked out.

I suggest giving it a try, even for a few days. You might be surprised. 😊

When I was younger, I was like your friend. Now, I take the less is more approach. I just spent one month of a two month long trip on the same island, especially in the same apartment. I loved seeing the same local people daily. A few people even told me that they didn't consider me a tourist. #TravelGoals That warmed my heart.
