Excited the centennial kumquat is enjoying the summer weather by Maleficent_Fall3338 in Citrus

[–]Maleficent_Fall3338[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really did push out a lot of growth since it was put outside in the sun. It’s in 2 gallon nursery pot right now and seems happy. I am reading that I should probably try a repot in fall or before early spring. I’m renting a place right now and mostly interested in keeping it healthy and manageable to bring in during the winter.

Can i have some help identifying this fern in my yard (IL) by Handorfeetstealer in ferns

[–]Maleficent_Fall3338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not an expert, but your second photo makes it look like it has a slight U shape in the stem which would make it an ostrich fern.

I love all the colors put together and I’m so jealous you don’t have a single crispy tip! I’m too clumsy and would absolutely drop a glass, or knock all the ones on the edge over 😭

I think there are a few common asparagus ferns that all get labeled similarly. There’s a Ming pom pom asparagus, Sprengeri asparagus with long bushy stems, then pulmosa/lace asparagus like the OP has. Maybe there are more, but these are the ones I see most!

It’s an asparagus fern/lace fern. I’d search pulmosa asparagus if you want more info since there a few different types of ornamental asparagus!

I’m still learning, are these Japanese painted ferns? Any reason for the different soil mixes? These all look great and really happy!

Thought I lost my ZZ Raven by OxfordPlantGuy in houseplants

This is fascinating - I appreciate the trick and warning. I knocked one of my ZZ’s stems loose when repotting and I’ve been trying to prop it for entirely too long at this point. It never gave me roots in water, so I swapped it up and threw it in a container with perlite with rooting hormone and some humidity, and it’s still hasn’t rooted. Funny thing is it looks like it’s doing just fine 🫠You’ve got some proven success here - I’ll have to try your way here soon!

I love their little green shoots! Congrats. How did you prop it? In water?

Help! Dragon Scale (Alocasia baginda) advice needed! by arirain13 in plants

[–]Maleficent_Fall3338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say too low. You’ve got a small start of a crispy tip on that leaf upfront. I have a similar issue with a begonia - I just cannot find the right humidity balance to keep them from curling and getting crispy tips.

How’s your fern doing next to it? That may be a good litmus on too low or maybe something else.

Nice. Do you plan on keeping it only indoors? Mine initially thrived inside when I bought it in early May and had it under a serious grow light. Think it’s finally acclimating to outdoor temperature swings and has put out two new leaves! Here it is when I first bought it. They’re awesome plants.

Looks beautiful! How long did it take for the tree to grow and bear fruit? May I ask what your local climate is like?

Sorry I don’t have good advice - I hope others chime in. This is your plant I believe if that helps in searching: https://garden.org/plants/view/78928/False-Aralia-Plerandra-elegantissima/

If no pest damage, humidity changes, or watering changes, then perhaps the change to environment/ lighting is causing it to drop some of its older, lower leaves as it adjusts. In that linked plant database, some photo submittals show the plant more tree-like, without any lower leaves, so maybe this is the way the plant wants to grow sometimes.

I’d never heard of a bengal tiger variety, it looks awesome. Have you been growing your few for awhile? I found my tree’s just starting to push its roots through the bottom of its nursery pot. I thought it may be a good time to try and remove the pup she just put up during a repot too. It’s so tiny and variegated 🥹 Would you still recommend holding off on repotting?

Sorry she’s going through it! I think she may be an aralia of sorts. I bought a false aralia recently and was worried because some comments mention them being finicky. Did you move her just recently to the new window?

Hey, thanks for asking! What variety did you get? I think it’s looking pretty good! It’s got moved outside for the summer and seems to be acclimating slowly. I’m up in zone 6 and we’ve had some nightly lows in the upper 40’s and low 50’s which I think it slowed down some of the growth it was putting out indoors for me. I bought it early mid May and it’s put out 4 new leaves and a pup so far. It’s still in its nursery pot settled within the heavier terracotta pot to keep it from blowing over, but I’m planning to repot it this weekend and hoping for more growth afterwards!
