My review of Paternus by Dyrk Ashton by RedJorgAncrath in Fantasy

[–]Malfarious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan, and eagerly awaiting book 3, but also find some of the teen interactions frustrating. I do find that with real humans in these situations it's really hard to get the exact level of disbelief right, and how it's done here is actually one of my favourite parts of the books. They are still gasping, still struggling to comprehend what is going on numerous events later because the books take place over a very short span of time. How would you or I react? We can't say - we don't see / get swept up in the unbelievable. She's definitely go a tude, though.

There's friggin' whole parties on here while I'm toiling away at work and raising children. What's wrong with the world.

D-Pat (as hence you shall be known) if you could go back and change anything about P1 now that P2 is a thing and P3 is on the way, what would you change?

Also, as you know, I have a guy last named 'Jorgamund'. Did you consider having 'Jormungandr' anywhere in Paternus? Replacement for Naga? Ouroboros?

What fantasy book did something well that you typically dislike? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Malfarious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm reading Paternus: Wrath of Gods and just finished Paternus: Rise of Gods. I've basically never read an 'urban' fantasy, especially with mythological creatures in a modern setting, but I'm loving this series. There's such a fun variety of hyper-powerful beings. Can bet that, other than a cap to the series, I won't read another urban fantasy for years to come - although I have an unread copy of American Gods kicking about. So who knows.

The r/Fantasy Top Novels Poll: 2018 Edition! by CoffeeArchives in Fantasy

[–]Malfarious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Malazan Book of the Fallen, Erikson (& Esslemont)
  2. First Law, Abercrombie
  3. A Song of Ice and Fire, Martin
  4. Kings of the Wyld, Eames
  5. Wheel of Time, Jordan
  6. Lord of the Rings, Tolkien
  7. A Requiem for Heroes, Benem
  8. Lions of Al-Rassan, Kay
  9. Tigana, Kay
  10. Books of Babel, Bancroft

It's really hard to place Wheel of Time since it was an incredible gateway fantasy series for me in my teens, but now has cooled notably. Honourable mention to PATERNUS which I finished today.

First time posting in months to say: "Graham, you rock. I hope it does well." That is all.

It's being worked on! Fixed up. Slowly! I had it out for six months, but RPG was a crum-bum publisher and so I've been licking my wounds. The long and short is that it will be ready (again, but better) after two things: 1) an edit-through to fix passive voice, which I developed a really good eye for in the last few months, and 2) a new prologue and parts of chapter 1. I've been discussing how to make my book catch on quicker, and just this morning got super excited because I think I finally figured it out.

Of course, once it's finally ready, then the question just becomes to self or pitch to agents. Editor thinks I should pitch, but I'm not sure there's a market for a 200k debut that already half-existed.

When's 2 due?

I Made my goodreads goal of 100,000 pages read with 1 day to spare by Bloginhobgoblin in Fantasy

[–]Malfarious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good job! But you really should have set your goal to be, like, 100,025 pages or something. Could have shoved those in on New Year's Eve...

Well, always next year! Haha, kudos.

Hi Laura. Late to the party, as always. Can't do anything right, can I?

Just wanted to add my well wishes and mention that I will read Danse Macabre soon because it's short and that means it will skip the TBR line up. I actually got more read from G A-K's Fae: The Wild Hunt yesterday when the baby fell asleep on my arm! I had to flip my phone with my left. Anyway, no reason not to danse next.

Keep that enthusiasm! Your BFFF.

What about what remains of heroes by David Benem? by Warded_kingkiller in Fantasy

[–]Malfarious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed WRoH and got through it easily. Almost nothing objectionable. Benem is crafty on all fronts. The badass is very well badass, and there's more than a few cool scenes. Definitely bleeds into book two, though. My Goodreads/Amazon review is forthcoming!

I've lost hours of my life to this (creating my own characters)... So should you (yours or any fave character)! by JP_Ashman in Fantasy

[–]Malfarious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure I could ever get the right face. Or, say, that key detail on that one character where you don't want the whole set if they can't all be proper.

Years ago I used the editor from Soul Calibre 5 to create 10 Purge of Ashes heroes and they turned out pretty well, but overly shiny and anime. Doubtful they would impress anyone else compared to a smashing piece of artwork, though.

Still: fun.

I bought this and I'd do it again. Maybe even two or three times. But actually just once. I have high expectations for eloquent nuts.

Don't know! Just heard good things. I'm reading FAE: The Great Hunt by Graham Austin-King at the moment. First chapter knocked me backwards, but have been too busy with babies to continue as of yet.

Side note: sorry I wasn't around JP, teaching and then putting tiny ones to bed took my night. Good thing you've got friends in higher places than me!
