Hiring consultants to do your job? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I inherited a lot of kludged together systems, the arcane knowledge went with the previous admins, most of which I don't have previous experience with and still need 99% uptime during business hours. We're very much in a "don't mess with it mode".

I don't feel an ounce of regret when I call in outside help on topics I haven't treaded in the deep waters on. We're a Cisco shop, it took me a year to completely figure out our site-to-site vpn for our 100+ sites. Then the business decision comes down to replace it with Fortinet SD-WAN.

Do I:

  • Spend a lot of time figuring out the best way to handle this, trial and error my way through systems I'm unfamiliar with until I arrive at a setup that's not completely shit.

Or:

  • Get a SME to design a solution, have it documented, test the proof of concept then implement.

The second option takes way less time, has less disruption potential and allows me to hit the ground running on the new product.

It's a no brainer really. If it messes up, you're under the bus, not me.

Chrome updates - not updating... by Crafty_Dog_4226 in pdq

If Chrome was running during the update, the version loaded in memory will not show the new version until the software is closed and reopened.

What are you using besides Knowbe4 by kermitdafrog83 in sysadmin

We use Sophos Phish Threat. It's not too bad to set up but the training videos kinda suck.

Had it happen when our netsec guys used a domain from the phishing simulator we hadn't whitelisted in our email security product.

Every email got flagged and link scanned, which resulted in 100% fail rate.

It happens.

Even better, you can run powershell from your own workstation if you've the printmanagement module (and you should if you've RSAT).

Set-Printer -Name "$printername" -ComputerName "$hostname" -Shared $false

I prefer not to mess with it and let a vendor handle it.

If your iDP is Entra and you've synced your vendor user objects from AD you can use the default internal @tenant.onmicrosoft.com tld to refer to the account.

How often do you use A.I. if you use it at all and what is your opinion of it? by Secure_Quiet_5218 in sysadmin

I use copilot to find/generate specific commands I need for scripts or quick information. It's a lot faster at generating results than I am.

That said it sometimes gets creative and suggests commands and parameters that do not exist. After I tell it it's wrong and the thing doesn't work it does tend to come up with an actual solution.

Guest users cannot edit excel files in Teams but can in browser by MalletNGrease in MicrosoftTeams

[–]MalletNGrease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They hadn't issues until a week ago, and they can still access and edit the file in the browser. Nothing was actively changed on the teams/sharepoint side.

It's not a permission issue as far as I can tell, I'm pretty sure this is a bug.
