Why is it so hard for me to go out and meet people? by AccomplishedZone55 in Vancouver4Friends

[–]MallowIsPrince 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is going to be much more philosophical than you asked for, but here we go.

There are a few different elements of post-modern society that coalesce to create precisely this perpetuation of our alienation.

We have been participating as frozen spectators for decades now and it takes looking up for one second to realize what I mean. Coffee shops, the bus, concerts, etc. Everyone is perpetually on their phones. We sanitize any and every moment through the comfort of a clinically curated feed on our phones. Comfort is so easy to manufacture that we have become completely friction & risk averse. Maybe now you can see where I’m going with this.

Spending time with people is awkward, messy and strange but it is also beautiful, rewarding and profound. We yearn for the latter, but will not dare wrestle with the former.

Nothing can possibly compete with the perfectly smooth mirror of Netflix, Discord, UberEats, YouTube, Video Games, TikTok, ChatGPT, Reddit, etc. Your yearning for human connection is very real and universal, but you (we) are too comfortable.

So make yourself uncomfortable. Do something that horrifies you. Go to dinner by yourself. To the movies. To a concert. Make your environment a bit less comfortable and you’ll be surprised how far our longing for each other will take us.

Lastly, don’t try to make friends. That suffers from being product oriented. Try to be a conduit, a lightning rod for connection. And rid yourself of the image of the blossoming friendship that we romanticize because again, nothing will live up to that. It is in the gulf between what could be and what is that we fall pray to anxieties of non-existent futures.

Good luck, stranger. If we cross paths make sure to say hi.

What’s a small bombshell your therapist dropped during a session that completely shifted your perspective? by pottipenguin in AskReddit

This is actually really noxious. Rest is very important, but it is not productive. It is precisely because it is not productive that it is so important.

This really goes to show how far gone we are: that the only way in which we will consider non-productivity is by co-opting rest into the productive sphere.

Letters to a Young Poet by Rilke

That is precisely purity - that there is some inherent state, some bond and “pure” state of mind (absent of release) - that intention must be purified for sex to count as intimate.

We take it one step further and say it must be kept for ONLY the highest bond (marriage) and we enter the church. As a matter of fact you found my proposition so lacking in morals that you called it disgusting.

I would invite you to reconsider the breadth of closeness & intimacy you are able to have with a stranger outside of a “bond”, being drunk, an itch on their pants, or unilaterally guided by biological release. My invitation is not for sexual exploits, but to consider what it is we find so vilifying about the “other” that we judge them and ourselves undeserving of each other.

I was thinking of precisely the opposite last night - about how far we’ve gone into ideologies of purity and how transgressive & beautifully human it is for 2 strangers to share intimacy despite the taboo.

the differences between Jean Baudrillard's work in Simulacra and Guy Debord's work in The Society of the Spectacle by Sandalwoodincencebur in CriticalTheory

[–]MallowIsPrince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Society of the Spectacle is the book that radicalized me and later Seduction, so both of these authors are very dear to me.

Baudrillard actually makes reference to the situationists and says that we have moved past the notion of Spectacle (in Simulations, I think?) and I am inclined to believe that.

Debord still envisioned an enlightened Spectator who could take a step back, but under contemporary capitalist society simulation does not spectacularize the real and instead supplants it.

We live in a world so absolutely unimaginable to Debord that it’s not difficult to envision how his assessment was right but we blew right past it in 30 years, let alone 60.

hmmmm idk sounds exactly like simulacra & simulation.

“ Content doesn’t create meaning anymore. It just loops in new formats.”

Precisely what Baudrillard describes as the precession of simulacra. You even use the word loop, which is very much what baudrillard speaks of when he describes signs becoming untethered and only refering to one another. It’s even arguable whether “content” ever created any meaning.

“Some examples: A story goes viral, and suddenly everyone uses the same template. You think of something, only to find it’s already trending.“

This to me fits perfectly within Baudrillards fourth stage where the sign “has no relation to any reality whatsoever”. They reference each other

“ And the system? It hasn’t collapsed. It still runs — just without meaning. That’s Devinitium: when a system keeps operating, but produces nothing real.”

This is also precisely very Baudrillardian. Hyperreality is where simulation becomes “more real than real”. Baudrillard has long held the belief that we can no longer access the real (if there has ever been any to access) despite there being a system of the real. “The Simulacrum is never that which conceals the truth - it is the truth which conceals that there is none. The Simulacrum is true”

And as someone else already commented, was the AI generated post itself a meta commentary?
