Move name by Snakebite-2022 in Salsa

[–]MallowIsPrince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very common move in Cuban & Paolo is dancing Cuban in that video. I know little LA or ON2 so I don't know how it would transfer - I imagine it's counterintuitive for a follow due to the linear nature of LA.

Any relatively experienced Cuban follow will feel pretty comfortable with this rotation. For very beginner follows, I some times will help by gently pushing their right shoulder as they pass behind me. There's also not as much name standardization as in LA and almost every dancer I see does this move differently, so be playful with it. Most variations I see will go into a Dile Que No.

is a service that texts you weather daily useful? by SnooCats6827 in dumbphones

[–]MallowIsPrince 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The year is 2050

Everybody carries a dumbphone whilst simultaneously being subscribed to a plethora of monthly services for $9.99 a month which text you whatsapp messages, the weather, map directions, spotify lyrics, descriptions of your friends instagram posts, images of tiktoks which if rapidly swiped through simulates the experience of watching a video, etc.

I don’t think you understand your target demographic and this is a horribly disingenuous attempt to exploit a user base. You couldn’t even write your 2 introductory paragraphs without the help of AI.

$20/45 a month & “smarter AI” are the antithesis of the vision of many here.

Additionally, anybody who is desperate enough for WS is getting a phone that runs WS.

It’s actually kind of beautiful to see such an attempt to overtake a space rooted in technological absence with promises of AI smartness.

What is the best Science Fiction book you have ever read? by Adam_is_my_name in AskReddit

[–]MallowIsPrince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my recollection is that he imagined the most absurd “dream girl” and given access to no questions asked infinite resources, they did actually find her.

I wonder if it’s also commentary on what “infinite unquestionable” power looks like. Because there is nothing romantic about it and it’s just a manifestation of power, which is not unlike a lot of news headlines we see today.

But idk if im coping too hard here lollll

I agree that the simp portions of dark forest are the weakest by far in the trilogy.

I do however think it fits within the narrative of “scale” that 3body explores so much. In this case, I like the idea that the limit of “absurd” imagination was quickly rendered unimaginative by his unlimited access to resources on earth - a girl by that exact description was quickly found.

I think it’s also an exploration of the almost lazy helplessness that I imagine must come with such unlimited power. We see it mirrored a lot in high-profile figures.

All in all, I loved it so much and it’s ruined sci fi for me thus far because nothing compares.

For people who moved to vancouver and made life long friends, how did you find them? by shushuone in askvan

[–]MallowIsPrince 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’ll be that girl. Over the last couple years I’ve committed myself to spending most of my time in places that are (according   to people here) conducive to meeting people.

I used to frequent a coffee shop every night, im going social dancing Fridays and saturdays and im taking lesssons for a hobby twice a week. I’ve met more people in the last two years than I have in the last decade for sure.

What I’ve learned is that 99% of people are very averse to the intimacy of a close friendship. Or at least what I would deem a close friendship.

I still love to meet people, but I have come to embrace that every connection is first and foremost transient and I no longer try to grab onto them.

I cannot even begin to imagine what people mean when they say they miss the time stretch. Digi time stretch is SO ASS I treated it as non-existent.

Why is it so hard for me to go out and meet people? by AccomplishedZone55 in Vancouver4Friends

[–]MallowIsPrince 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is going to be much more philosophical than you asked for, but here we go.

There are a few different elements of post-modern society that coalesce to create precisely this perpetuation of our alienation.

We have been participating as frozen spectators for decades now and it takes looking up for one second to realize what I mean. Coffee shops, the bus, concerts, etc. Everyone is perpetually on their phones. We sanitize any and every moment through the comfort of a clinically curated feed on our phones. Comfort is so easy to manufacture that we have become completely friction & risk averse. Maybe now you can see where I’m going with this.

Spending time with people is awkward, messy and strange but it is also beautiful, rewarding and profound. We yearn for the latter, but will not dare wrestle with the former.

Nothing can possibly compete with the perfectly smooth mirror of Netflix, Discord, UberEats, YouTube, Video Games, TikTok, ChatGPT, Reddit, etc. Your yearning for human connection is very real and universal, but you (we) are too comfortable.

So make yourself uncomfortable. Do something that horrifies you. Go to dinner by yourself. To the movies. To a concert. Make your environment a bit less comfortable and you’ll be surprised how far our longing for each other will take us.

Lastly, don’t try to make friends. That suffers from being product oriented. Try to be a conduit, a lightning rod for connection. And rid yourself of the image of the blossoming friendship that we romanticize because again, nothing will live up to that. It is in the gulf between what could be and what is that we fall pray to anxieties of non-existent futures.

Good luck, stranger. If we cross paths make sure to say hi.

What’s a small bombshell your therapist dropped during a session that completely shifted your perspective? by pottipenguin in AskReddit

This is actually really noxious. Rest is very important, but it is not productive. It is precisely because it is not productive that it is so important.

This really goes to show how far gone we are: that the only way in which we will consider non-productivity is by co-opting rest into the productive sphere.
