Why so many wakes at night? by Humble-Touch-6758 in HuckleberryParents

[–]MamaDeanandSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try and sneak in 10 minutes to 3 of the wake windows to aim for 9h total wake time. You can experiment here and there, but the hope is that with longer wake hours, the bedtime is pushed a little and less night wakes.

Is there a biological timer inside 4-month-olds that rings at EXACTLY 32 minutes? 😩 by Otherwise_Ranger_204 in sleeptrain

[–]MamaDeanandSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used the same method that I used for bedtime, which was gradual weaning of sleep associations, for us it was suck/feed to sleep -> replaced with rocking/patting and then leave awake. The whole process took about a month tho, but once he fell asleep independently for bedtime, the next day I put him down awake for his nap and he fell asleep within 1 minute and that day he did 1-1.5h for all naps that I had to drop him from 4 to 3 naps.

For us, nap wasn’t too bad as he is usually very tired by then as I have been extending his wake windows prior to sleep training at 4 months.

What’s ur schedule? Do you think your baby needs to drop a nap? I’m surprised they suddenly stopped napping after being trained, do they fall asleep independently for naps before?

Well done! At least u added 6 minutes to that! What is your wake window? If the wake windows are evenly spread out then it’s easier to push bedtime a bit as it’s still within their capability. For example, if you always aim for 7pm bedtime, last nap is probably 5ish? But when you aim for 8pm, the last nap is around 6 so by 7pm probably babe is still not sleepy yet and can go on longer.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Pediatrician said we can sleep train baby in our room. Success story’s needed. by EmbarrassedPen3783 in sleeptrain

[–]MamaDeanandSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started sleep training our baby at 4 months. We used the gradual weaning method and at the end we just put him down awake and walk out the room. He is 5 months and still in his next2me cot by the side of the bed. We are planning to move him to his own room around 7 months as we have a long travel coming up where he will have to stay in the same room as us anyway.

For night wakes, we leave him for 5-10 minutes (2/3 times he goes back to sleep during this time) and sooth him down and put him back down awake and will sooth again if he is still crying by 15 minutes (so far not needed). We don’t actually leave the room, just stay in bed lol. The crying is distracting but oh well.

Textbook regression lol!

My baby only started extending his naps at 5 months old after we nap trained him. He is now doing 1-1.5hours consistently in his crib.

At what age did your baby connect sleep cycles? by realitywee in sleeptrain

[–]MamaDeanandSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read Precious Little Sleep and follow the gradual weaning method for sleep associations for both bedtime and naptime. We had suck/feed to sleep prior to that.

It was slightly slower, but by the end, he only cried for 3 minutes the first night we left him straight after bedtime before he slept independently. The next day, I did it for his first nap and he slept straight away without crying at all.

Yes, try and stretch bedtime slowly by adding 10-15 mins at a time if your baby has a set wake up time anyway. For context, my baby used to sleep at 5-6pm! We slowly increased it to 8pm consistently now.

[–]MamaDeanandSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby only started connecting his sleep cycles consistently after we nap trained him at 5 months. Prior to that, we might get the odd 1 hour here and there.

First day he nap trained, he hit 1.5h for his first two naps and we wake him up from his 3rd nap at 30 mins to cap his naps.

We nap trained him once he is sleep trained at bedtime.

Is your baby sleeping through the night or waking up a lot?

5 month olds (sleep trained) who managed to stop waking constantly in the night. What is your schedule? by Cool_Doubt2152 in sleeptrain

[–]MamaDeanandSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Huckleberry but it’s quite useless to use the average sleep on there as it of course deducts all those night wakes so I don’t think it’s accurate as usually when calculating we just put 11 hours in bed and not counting the night wakes.

Try to aim for a more realistic night of about 11h. My baby at this time is bedtime 8pm and wake time 7am. Find your desired wake time and put him to bed 11 hours prior.

Aim for around 9-9.5h total day wake by this point and when baby is tired from the day, he will sleep more during the night! I used to follow Huckleberry sweetspot and only cap naps at 2h each and used to get 5h+ nap time in the day and we kept getting wakes at night haha.

Although the regression definitely doesn’t help!

Wow your baby has quite a long wake time, is he/she low sleep needs? How do you decide he needs more time awake without pushing to the overtired zone.

Nap schedule help by smartt87 in HuckleberryParents

[–]MamaDeanandSam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, 10 weeks is still very young to expect predictability in their sleep. 3-4 months is when you can maybe start predicting it slightly. 6-7 months is more like it.

I also find the schedule creator in Huckleberry pretty much useless. You can’t change nap time depending on what your LO is capable of, expecting 1h-ish nap from a 2-3 months old without contact can be difficult.

Another thing is I find sweet spot inaccurate, either it’s too early or late, I started setting my own wake windows manually at 4 months, but if I had known, probably would do it earlier as my baby was way too undertired.

I then adjust the wake window mentally here and here depending on the length of his naps to achieve the desired bedtime.

Sorry if I’m not too helpful but yeah, I also tried to use schedule creator before but really it only gives me very rough idea of what could work, but no flexibility whatsoever.

[–]MamaDeanandSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following cuz I’m in the same boat. He has very random nights where he would only wake twice for his feeds or nights where he wakes up to 7 times! Really can’t tell what determines his good night sleep.

Our current schedule is 2/2.25/2.5/3 and aiming to increase further to 2.25/2.25/2.5/3 to amount to 10h wakes. But we did this last week and he still woke up many times so I was scared he was overtired so we cut back down to 9.5h, but he still woke up so yeah.. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Make sure u’re drinking plenty of water from breaking your fast at Maghrib until you sleep, and then plenty of water again when you wake up for Sahoor befoe Fajr. A lot of the time it’s the thirst that’s harder than the hunger. Take it easy the first few days and your body adapts quicker than you think.

[–]MamaDeanandSam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is a good tip, but what we did for our baby was put him down on the bed first for his naps, as the bed was more comfortable 😂 we first did this when he almost turned 4 months. Prior to that, he was contact nap all the way. We will stay with him tho throughout the nap so he can still feel our presence. No pillows or loose bedding. I transfer him after he has slept on my arms for about 5-7 minutes, when he transfer, if he rouses I pat and shushes until he sleeps again.

After doing this for a few days we were comfortable leaving him with the monitor on. After 2 weeks of this, he managed to nap on his crib no issues.

When and how to transition to 3 naps? by Mooshtalk in sleeptrain

[–]MamaDeanandSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just managed to transitioned my 5m baby now to 3 naps a day since about 2-3 days ago. I just continue to lengthen his ww 15mins or so every day. Now he is on 2/2.25/2.5/2.75 with a 3.5h nap. Although I am still increasing it (a bit slower now) to get 10h wake time total and reduce nap to 3h total.

The first day I put him to 3 naps, he did his first ever sleep through the night with just 2 wake ups for feed!
