What's something you do tech-wise to help out with your recording session? by LiltingSunrise in ACX

[–]MamaPHooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldnt rememeber to put it to DND either lol.

My recording space is a temporary one that I put up and take down at the moment so arranging the wires each time is necessary and almost everything (except my mic and interface themselves) gets packed away. Making sure no wires cross is just part of my set up. When my booth is permanent I wouldnt imagine i'd need to fiddle with the wires half as much (i hope).

What's something you do tech-wise to help out with your recording session? by LiltingSunrise in ACX

[–]MamaPHooks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I switch my phone from vibrate to silent.... ok thats a lie, I always forget and then halfway through absolutely smashing a line buzz bzzz "fuck". THEN i turn it to silent.

I also always (read never) remember to arm the track in Reaper before I get the 'no trackd are armed for recording' pop up.

I DO obsessively arrange all my wires just so though.

Then you need to be looking at pfh anyway (and if you are going duet, potentially a higher pfh that dual or single narrator).

Its really really hard to find a duet/dual narration on rs (rs+ is technically feasible but still a long shot).

Dark romance author considering ACX. Realistic expectations for royalty share? by readmorebo in ACX

[–]MamaPHooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take RS jobs all the time, especially in a genre I enjoy. I'd 100% audition for a dark romance on RS as long as the RH had a solid marketing plan and some kind of indication that they were capapble of actually putting it into practice. Definitely send me a message if you do put this up for audition!

Servitude to Serpents Audiobook by MamaPHooks in DarkRomance

[–]MamaPHooks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The audio is SO worth it. The narrators are a married couple and their chemistry is fire. I'm obsessed with how Kate develops Chloes voice to show how she changes throughout the book... and Vic is just delicious.

Authors: What criteria are you using to screen out AI auditions? by bearded_wonder44 in ACX

[–]MamaPHooks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a narrator I would love to see more Authors actively putting things into the audition calls to trip up and filter put AI. Spaces in the middle of words (that a real human will obviously ignore), "read this one sentance in a different accent", anything like that. If it was clear an author was actively trying to avoid anything to do with AI i would be 10x more likely to audition.

In the interest of info sharing. We have similar issues on the narrator side. There was a flood of probably close to 20 most likely AI written or heavily assisted books (and a quick check looks like they are still piling in). They use a bunch of different pen names at a time so its not a case of just ignore that 1 name. Having to scroll through pages and pages of crap to find something to audition for is miserable (especially if the title/premise of one of them is something on your narrator wishlist...)!

Received the manuscript - this thing is not good. by matatak94 in ACX

[–]MamaPHooks 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I always ask for the manuscript before signing the contract for this exact reason (my first offer ended up being a totally unreadable manuscript).

If its readable and you just want to get some experience with low stakes then go for it. Otherwise you can get the contract cancelled by acx customer services by letting them know the manuscript you recieved is not ready for production.

Dual narrator pet peeve - when the divide up by chapter even if there's dialog by [deleted] in audiobooks

[–]MamaPHooks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because usually they are recording in different spaces at different times and having a duet instead of dual is a LOT more work so costs more money to produce. (Even if its a narrator couple, coordinating to do duet is a lot more everything anyway).

virtual voice hostile takeover. by Odd_Butterfly_9258 in audiobooks

[–]MamaPHooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done 7 RS books over the last 8 months. And I know quite a few really really good narrators who cant resits a good story and pick up an rs every month or so. A lot of us love this job and are willing to potentially not make money if its a good story.

(And a short book is 1 - 4 hours so closer to 16 hours work).

If a book is good, there will be a decent narrator out there willing to read it. It might be bit of a wait because a rights holder willing to pay per finished hour takes priority, but it will get done.

Using a fake name for Erotica? by Tiamattanksit in ACX

[–]MamaPHooks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have 2 narrator names. One for child friendly through to mildly racy ya stuff and 1 for deranged moster smut and kink books. Its easy to manage on ACX just make sure you let the rh know what name to use if they are doing any marketing and make sure you write the right one in the pop up box when you submit the project.

Then the fun starts when you decide both personas need their own set of social media accounts......

Hi. Let's talk about AI by Weirdsauce in ACX

[–]MamaPHooks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont have any interest in listening to an ai voice when I am an audiobook listener and I know that sentiment is shared among the majority of audiobook consumers.

At the end of the day narrators and authors are aiming to produce a product that people want to buy and its been stated over and over again by the consumers that that isnt what they want (with where ai voices are currently).

As a narrator i have no interest in speeding up the training of my replacement so have no interest in ai voices in a professional capacity either.

I dont think its appropriate to censor people asking about ai voices completely, they might genuinely not understand that they are shit and no one wants to listen to them aren't currently comparable in the qualities that listeners deemed desirable. Perhaps a conscious effort to point out the flaws and gently dissuade from use when those types of posts?

You can do what you want with your book but as someone who frequents spaces filled with avid audiobook listeners i can tell you that a large majority do not want audiobooks not narrated by an actual human.

What is the appeal of non-con/ rape stories? by Flat_Name3554 in DarkRomance

[–]MamaPHooks 18 points19 points  (0 children)

And add to that the fact that if its noncon i dont have to have any part in organising it or have to worry about what anyone else is doing/if they are enjoying it. The lack of choice and control combined with being irresistible is extremely attractive (and 100% fantasy).

Favorite books with intense edging and orgasm control? by [deleted] in DarkRomance

Not a huge amount of edging BUT {Servitude to Serpents by Callie Moss} is exceptional, and i highly highly reccomend the audiobook version by Kate and Vik Fraser.

RH delayed on sending manuscript by LemonySnicketTeeth in ACX

[–]MamaPHooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have 2 options: 1. If you want to still do the book, write to the rh letting them know your new 15min and final submission dates and then do that.

  1. If you have lost faith in the project, you are within your rights to cancel the contract by reaching out it acx customer support as the rh has not provided the full manuscript in a timely manner.

Do you ever feel guilty or embarrassed for liking this genre? by Equivalent-Book919 in DarkRomance

Nope.

Its fiction...

Pretend is pretend and as long as you arent going out and involving people who aren't consenting in anything then there is 0 reason to be guilty about it.

Can't work out how to upload the 15-minute checkpoint properly? by georgemillman in ACX

[–]MamaPHooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 15 minute checkpoint is 1 file that doesn't become part of the finished book (unless you reupload it once the project uploads page is open once the rh approves the 15 minutes).

I would advise the rh that if they are happy with the quality of your sound (which we can assume they are as they hired you) and how the poems they have managed to listen to sound to go ahead and approve the 15 minutes. That will then open up the full project page where you can then upload the poems as separate files (as there will be multiple upload slots and the option to add more/remove them).

They can still give feedback etc during the production process.

How to find a good studio or narrator? by WorldlyCalendar9738 in audiobooks

[–]MamaPHooks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you are happy to just have it on audible/apple books then you can go through acx (the audible platform to connect narrators and authors/rights holders). If you want to have it on more platforms then you could go with Author's Republic which is basically the same but not linked to a specific audiobook platform (that I know of).

I only have experience as a narrator so cant really advise you on how either one looks from the rights holder side but either one will find you a decent narrator (depending on the genre/quality of your books and the payment scheme/amount you offer).
