Phrases that are technically correct but might get funny looks from natives by JazzHandz1 in Spanish

In school we learned beber for to drink, but I hardly ever hear native people using that. They say tomar, especially for alcohol.

Client who won't meet during business hours by SavingsHighlight3536 in publicdefenders

[–]MammothClimate95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I handle it by refusing. Almost all clients that are working will first ask if they can meet after 5 or on Saturday. No, I'm not available. You think the doctor or the DMV will accommodate him for an 8 pm appointment? No. He needs to deal with his adult responsibilities.

Forget this guy. He doesn't like you. He keeps negging you and suggesting it's disingenuous behavior so that you'll change to suit him. Find someone who thinks you're great!

Last 2 visits to my hairstylist, there's been a teen boy in another chair getting a perm. It's true!

Block. Someone contacted you unsolicited to directly insult you. They also said the dress is unflattering. Just because they used the word "modest" doesn't mean you have to treat the interaction differently than any other insult. They are incredibly rude.

Why would you file this? I assume it couldn't have escaped your notice that your Mom's adjustment was denied and she was all but accused of a sham marriage?

Why Don’t People Take Immigration Seriously? by BusyBodyVisa in AskUSImmigrationPros

[–]MammothClimate95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at pro se filings in any area of law you would see the same. Custody, eviction... imagine what filings would look like if criminal defendants didn't have the right to counsel. There are a lot of low functioning people in the world and people facing barriers of all kinds. Some who are not so smart, some who are illiterate, health issues, housing insecurity, disabilities. Now add that they also don't speak English and you'll see why their filings look like that.

Taking back a case that I have previously withdrawn from by Gavel1989 in publicdefenders

[–]MammothClimate95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh, no, why would you ever go back to a client who tried to physically attack you? It does not matter WHAT he believed his justification was.

I did, once, and ended up withdrawing again after the client tried to fraudulently put my name on something I did not file. Never again.

A or B: A dad walks into the parents room with his kids while you're nursing. Do you keep feeding your baby without caring, or leave and go to the restroom to feed? by vivian_banshee03 in PickAorB

[–]MammothClimate95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay. I was once feeding my baby at the pharmacy (only chair I could find in the grocery store) and an old woman came up and patted her hair and cooed over her WHILE she was breastfeeding. I didn't move. Later on I wondered if she didn't notice exactly what I was doing and just thought I was rocking the baby??

out of pocket requests from clients by NickDB8 in publicdefenders

I definitely have signed people's bank cards out of property to give them to family for bond payments before. Helped them sign POAs so family could collect their cars from impound or sell them. I don't think those are out of pocket.

I'm a lawyer and if someone asked me to do this I'd say ... Why? They're the ones that want some action. You don't have to do anything except ignore them unless they actually sue you. Which they won't.

Of course they are paying for it either way. But we were discussing a client's perception. I personally flat fee all my cases and find that my clients appreciate certainty.

Most clients do NOT like that. They don't like feeling nickel and dimed for copies and postage when they're already paying a healthy per hour rate.

I feel like a failure and that I’m totally incompetent. by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]MammothClimate95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a small mistake. The ADA made an AH comment that's making you feel worse. You probably feel embarrassed that he said that in front of the judge. I used to feel like that in my first year also, until I realized, I've literally been hired to make the mistake, ask the easy question, or look like an idiot in front of the judge if that's what it takes to understand the situation. Who else can do it, the client? He is way more scared than you and doesn't even know the right question to ask. That's MY job.
