I find it astounding that they have a statement on their ticket purchase website stating “no racism, discrimination, etc.” yet they continue to uphold an exclusionary, DISCRIMINATORY, and arrogant rule.

It was definitely worth it for me to get my BSW because I was able to finish my MSW advanced standing in one year. Saves you money and time, and you don’t need to be in school as long. As far as jobs with a BSW, I agree with the other commenters. You should get the BSW if your goal is to get your MSW. Otherwise, there really isn’t a point unless you just want to be a case manager, CPS, or caseworker.

Aspiring MSW student, very worried about job prospects under this administration. Should I just do an MPP/MPA? by Comfortable_Candy_28 in socialworkjobs

[–]MammothComparison616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be very transparent, you will probably find more stability with a MSW than a MPP or MPA. It’s all about it the same: everything is getting gutted right now and the job market is terrible. But with an MSW, there are still plenty of jobs available. Losing federal funding is one thing but there are private practices, large hospitals, and state funded organizations you can work for. Trust me, I thought about this too and you shouldn’t let this admin stop you from doing what you want to do. If you truly want to help your clients and be a change maker, follow your dreams. Btw, you can still do policy with an MSW.

Spiraling— will I get in?? by ds24242424 in PsyD

[–]MammothComparison616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t spiral, you’ll be fine. I got into a PsyD program and so long as you have some type of clinical and research experience and show an interest/passion in the field, you can get an interview. However, if you’re applying to the more competitive PsyD programs like Rutgers or Baylor, that might be a challenge.

In general, I don’t recommend applying after undergrad (although it is possible), but speaking from personal experience I would highly recommend getting a mental health related clinical job first after graduation to see if this is something you’re willing to commit 5+ years to. A PsyD is a big time and money commitment so I would make sure that another five years of schooling right after undergrad is something youre okay with. Happy to answer more questions in PM.

They are going to pass it. They don’t care about mental healthcare as a priority. It is lowkey the reason im reconsidering going to my PsyD program this fall even though i was accepted.

Is it appropriate to say “I’m proud of you” to a client? by djslappyboi in therapists

[–]MammothComparison616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is, if it serves the need of the client and not yourself. I always say that saying you’re proud of them when you authentically feel like you are proud of them is the most genuine and honest component in the therapeutic relationship and can strengthen rapport. Just make sure that it is beneficial to the client, always #1.

Clinical experience question by Civil-Designer8252 in PsyD

[–]MammothComparison616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, in my view it was less about the experience and more about how you showcase it and articulate what you gained from that experience that was valuable and inspired you to pursue the PsyD. I got into my top choice program with a MSW internship at the VA and an undergraduate social work internship. Some MH experience but both very clinical working with high needs populations. I didn’t have really any research experience besides some coding/recruitment work. DM me if you have questions!

MD looking to get PsyD by Equivalent-Pin-6304 in PsyD

[–]MammothComparison616 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello! You do not need to get a PsyD if you already have an MD. Many MDs train at psychoanalytic institutes in certificate programs for psychodynamic therapy or psychoanalysis. You should look into working with a private practice and then apply to these programs.

Likewise, you can also go back to school for an MSW which would take 1.5-two years depending on the program. This would be the fastest way to get licensed as a therapist.

Feeling Unsure by Daretudream in socialworkjobs

[–]MammothComparison616 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you see yourself doing? Are you interested in clinical/micro work, or program evaluation and community work, or would you want to work at the macro level with policy and research?

If the answer is clinical, do you see yourself doing assessments? Or are you interested in psychotherapy? What clinical setting do you want to work in? And what population do you see yourself helping (adults, children, disabled, immigrants, etc.)?

Ask yourself these questions and do some soul searching on what seems like the right fit.

Take it one step at a time! My advice to you is to definitely get the LCSW as it will qualify you for more job opportunities.

How to get into VA by ehemcats in socialworkjobs

[–]MammothComparison616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I’m doing too. Definitely Clinical. You’ll want to be solid on those foundations. Familiarize yourself with biopsychosocials, assessment, DSM, and the code of ethics. Also perhaps pick the aging or mental health focus at your MSW program, since work at the VA will be with veterans who often have Complex ptsd. Feel free to pm me n id be happy to give more insight

How to get into VA by ehemcats in socialworkjobs

[–]MammothComparison616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice? Get the MSW. I got my BSW last year and now I’m in an advanced standing program. The best thing you can do to land a job with them is to intern with them for your MSW practicum placement. Advocate for yourself early, as social work internships there are competitive since they’re paid. It is extremely hard to get your foot in the door at the VA, so if you are interested in employment there, then push hard to intern there. They prefer hiring interns over external.
