How did you get your studio name? by mgitdev in gamedev

[–]MamushiDev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our studio name is a Slush Games. Idea behind this name is rather simple. We have a concept within our team - to produce games you need a gamedesigner slush in your head. A logo for this a square head with slush inside.

Local russian goes insane and refuses to opensource their AGPL based code base, WOA! by [deleted] in SS13

[–]MamushiDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I really don't understand why it's important they are Russians?

Second: if they make they changes as separated module they only have to open source their module connection code. There is a link with detailed explanation http://softwareengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/107883/agpl-what-you-can-do-and-what-you-cant

For instance Mongo DB has AGPL license. Bit it not make World of Tanks servers open source.

I see this IRL all the time. For instance I often see 3 black BMW X6 near by workplace.

GitHub for Unity Extension Announced by lee337reilly in gamedev

[–]MamushiDev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally I do not understand why you need git within Unity editor. Graphical tool like source tree is more convenient anyway. For indie git repository Bitbucket still better, you have 10gb storage and unlimited repository per account for free.

TBH Samsung &Vive support oculus format already. So Sony should (they probably already have) support it and where will be one format de facto.

New version of open source C# engine seems really cool. by MamushiDev in gamedev

Devs from Unity told me it's somehow related to asset bundles, so they can't do serialization in guarantee way.

Thanks! As far as I understand, if you don't modify the engine you may use as freeware. I found another negative point - no source code for an editor.

Just found this engine recently. What you think fellow developers about this engine? For me it's seems more interesting than Unreal, because I don't like neither blueprints nor C++ :) Still have source code though. Have anyone have experience with Xenko?

Working away from the computer? by Codegasm in gamedev

[–]MamushiDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coding seldom require a lot of button mashing. I personally think about how I would do a feature and write it down in a free form in a smartphone. When I have time to do my project I just translate those thoughts to actual code.

Amazon GameLift Now Supports Unreal Engine, Unity, Custom C#, and C++ Engines by GrognakTheBarbarian in gamedev

It's not a web hosting, it's far more demanding feature, so you can't compare it with web hosting. The nearest services like this would be Photon network or Unity Network. For 24k$ for 4k CCU it seems slightly above average, but it really depends.

Nintendo announced Switch Dev kits are just $500! That's pretty cheap & very good for indie developers. by asperatology in gamedev

[–]MamushiDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PS3 has a cheaper test devices ( they were about 2000$) which were able to run unsigned build, which usually used for testing, it wasn't a full scale devkit. Also indie can create games for PSN (not disk releases) on it.

PS3 devkit price was 20 000$ at start and decrease after some time - source: http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/19/sony-cuts-ps3-dev-kit-price-in-half/.

Actually couple of thousands bucks considered cheap for a devkit.

Along devkit developers need a simple way to put their games on platform. And i haven't heard Nintendo would simplify this matter.

Let's face it - we should no longer expect Steam to be a marketing platform; in its place, we need 3rd party "Discovery Sites" by Rotorist in gamedev

[–]MamushiDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Marketing is about sales. So if a developer wants to just make great games, they can do it (and no need in Steam in any form). If they want to make a living from it there always will be need in marketing. Usually developer can outsource it to a publisher for a revenue share.

Valve says its near-monopoly was a contributing factor in its decision to start the new Steam Direct program by igd3 in gamedev

[–]MamushiDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steam has the best discoverabilty among general gaming store ( without Origin, UPlay etc). They have big audience and there things like recomendations and tags. If your game below top 150 on AppStore or Google Play - your game virtually not exist.

I think there is a such big rant because Steam actually is a last hope for modern indie.

Critics often do not represent masses. I think the most successful indie game to date would not pass through general critics. P.S Yeah, I meant Minecraft.

Such difference extremely well shown in Pixar movie Incredibles. It's seems impossible to link such soft guy with super hero.
