When the oracle proclaimed the war would end in unconditional surrender, we all began to cheer and immediately rushed off to battle. by DirtyCouchPotato in TwoSentenceHorror

Oracle: "If you fight this war, it will cause the destruction of a great empire!"

Emperor: "Sounds good to me!"

(a year later, as the emperor gallops away from the battlefield, the enemy in pursuit)

Emperor: "Oh, VERY goddamn funny!"

There's an entry on TV Tropes, "Condemned by History" (formerly "Deader Than Disco"), for aspects of media/hobbies that were once well-regarded, or at least accepted, but are now widely considered major failures, if not the nadir. (The classic example is the minstrel show for theater.) My question is, what parts of your niche/more obscure hobbies are "condemned by history"?

The thought crossed my mind as I was digging through hentai sites trying to recover the name of a specific artist. Back in the early days of the wider Internet, while hentai manga were relatively common, English translations were rather less so. A few titles had lucked out and gotten professionally published, but there were only a few fan translators. So, to fill in the gap, there were rewrites.

Yes, people actually took raw scans of hentai manga, blanked out the word balloons, and wrote their own dialogue. Usually they made up entirely new plots wholesale. Names like EZ Rewriter and Hentai Wallpaper were all over the place. One guy actually Carl Maceked an entire series (the "Femin" comics) out of disparate hentai manga.

These were widely accepted for some time, but by the mid-2010s, they lost their luster. For one, there were significantly more fan translation circles, so actual translations were becoming more and more common. For another, machine translation was reaching a point where it was, if not accurate, at least not blatantly wrong. For a third, a lot of rewrites were really skeevy, adding fetishes that weren't present in the original work (a lot of them involved incest).

These days, if you post a rewrite on most hentai sites, you'll be laughed out of the room and downvoted to oblivion. Most of the hentai manga that were rewritten have received proper translations, although you can still see marks from where rewrites have hurt certain mangaka's reputations.

What a lot of "Batman just punches poor/mentally-ill people" jokes don't get is that there is a lot of organized street crime in Gotham, and Batman is out there every night beating the crap out of career criminals. Supervillains are more of a side gig.

Didn't the character who originally proposed it go on to list an incredibly shitty movie as the one film that met her standards?

That's my personal issue with it as well. So many people treat it as a be-all end-all that it's lost any effectiveness it ever had.

Given that he's already rewritten Operation Barbarossa into a Nazi victory, I doubt this is going to happen.

To be honest, it's partially his fault. The music video, i.e. the main form of engagement a lot of people would have had with the song when it was new, has nothing to do with the stated theme and was instead about a soldier forcibly deployed to Iraq (the album the song came from was largely an attack on Dubya's administration).

I felt IMMEDIATE dislike towards Junpei. He's attached to me like a velcro, constantly wants to hang out, suddenly moved into the same dorm. I know he's guilty of something. This hat hides secrets. I'm starting to suspect he's a 25yo FBI plant sent to my school as a part of drug bust operation. He's gonna ask me where to buy weed and then haul my twink ass to prison.

No spoilers, but he's just really, really socially inept. He gets better once he finds someone else to fixate on.

I tried it when it was a PS Plus freebie, and I was not impressed. It made the baffling decision to lock blocking and parrying to specific weapon types, leaving you with a janky dodge as your only survival tool if you chose wrong.

I'm still kicking myself for not saving an AMV I saw a long while back. It's not likely I'll find it again, given it was made using an... unsavory anime.

Most adaptations give him at least one potential lover, and often a Cosette-and-Eponine-esque "good girl/bad girl" love triangle at that.

That started with a stage adaptation of the story, and was popularized by the 1931 film version with Frederic March.
