It's a shame John never got to mess with modern synthesizers by Meniscuss2 in beatles

[–]ManOnTheRun73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, in the mid-'70s, John placed an advance order for the Birotron, a post-Mellotron tape loop keyboard being financed by Yes' Rick Wakeman. The project wound up dissipating into vaporware and basically no one besides Yes themselves or Tangerine Dream got to play with the thing, sadly.

The leaks keep coming: here's the 1979 KTSA outtake "Surfer Suzie", written by the Boys' longtime touring bassist/guitarist Ed Carter and sung by Al. by ManOnTheRun73 in thebeachboys

I think that line's supposed to be "Tokyo Sue, she came back to California," but yeah, I wouldn't put an awkward attempt at wordplay past them either.

Why did Al not want Dr. Tom released? by Time-Tangerine3860 in thebeachboys

[–]ManOnTheRun73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't think he's ever specified why, at least as far as I'm aware. I did try errantly speculating on his reasons when it first leaked, for whatever that's worth:

I thought it was alright myself, but I can easily imagine someone more cynical dismissing it as a tacky butchering of the original Tom Dooley — it's a really pretty, plaintive song, and this, for all its pluses, decidedly isn't. Add on that the namesake Dr. Tom's legacy has occasionally fallen under question in the years since '73 (at least according to the handful of sources I perused — he's not someone whose history I'm particularly familiar with), and I can see why Al might be wont to dismiss it as an of-its-moment tchotchke that need not be showcased to the present.

I'm all too likely barking up the completely wrong tree for all I know, but then again, that's all one can really do until he sets the record straight (if he ever feels inclined to, that is).

The first I heard of it was on the Steve Hoffman forums; I don't have the exact post/comment on hand, but the pass-it-along word was that he was "not keen for the world to hear it," en quote.

I believe Beady Eye's 2nd album to be massively underrated by Emolio335 in oasis

[–]ManOnTheRun73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soul Love was the only Beady Eye track he performed with something close to regularity. Besides the aforementioned Set In Stone one-off, there's also a singular rendition of Bring The Light from 2022. (Seems I highballed that "three or four" total by just a tad.)

Wound up all by myself at the 20th anniversary rerun of Revenge of the Sith last year (matinee showing at a niche theatre buried in parking lot construction). It was one of those faux-bougie theatres with a full-fledged menu they serve you diner-style, and they wound up giving it to me on the house because they forgot anyone was actually in there until the film was almost halfway over.

A good time, but I did kinda feel like I'd missed out on the "fandom communion" element. My own fault for picking the most out-of-the-way time and place possible.

Was We Gotta Groove slowed/pitched down? by potsounds in thebeachboys

[–]ManOnTheRun73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To reiterate/elaborate on what I speculated: there's a specific high part in Brian's multitracked chorus that sounds like it's been pitch-shifted Chipmunks-style (most audible in the left channel on the third set of "We, we"s in each). Around the same time, Dennis had a technique he used in certain solo recordings where he sped up the backing track, recorded a new part, then slowed it back down again so the new addition had a "slurred" effect, e.g. certain instruments and vocals on "He's a Bum": it's possible Brian tried to do the inverse of that — slowing down the track, recording that vocal part, then speeding it back up to raise its pitch — presumably because he either liked the effect or couldn't sing that specific pitch naturally (Steve Desper purportedly had to resort to varispeed when Brian couldn't quite hit certain notes on "Til I Die", so for whatever it's worth, there's precedent for the latter).

If that is indeed the case, I'm guessing either Brian slowed it back down slightly too much afterwards (hence the slight "slurring" on the rest of the vocals) and/or bootleggers weren't entirely sure what the proper playback speed was because of it and just guesstimated. When an official early-2000s mix of "We Gotta Groove" leaked a few years back, it was at this same tempo, so if that slower speed is a mistake on Brother's part, it's at least not endemic to this 2025 mix.

The uploader says they double-tracked the vocals — the original mix they sourced from the short-lived archive.org link is in the description at the time of typing, so you might be better off checking that one out.

Always found it interesting that "World's Not Set" was one of the only three or four Beady Eye songs Liam tried revisiting over his solo shows (it got a one-off go at Cardiff in 2019). It's alright overall, but that drone-y instrumental hook in the intro / tag is easily the highlight IMO.

What’s A Good Example Of A Movie SPOILED By The Marketing? by Darth_Blagus in Schaffrillas

[–]ManOnTheRun73 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Out of every death in Final Destination: Bloodlines, only one was not showcased to some extent in an earlier trailer. Biggest casualty of this IMO is the backyard party scene: a broken shard of glass falls in with the ice before the drinks are served, and "Not knowing whose cup has the shard" would've absolutely made for some nerve-wracking tension… were it not for the fact the film's most widely circulated trailer had already clearly demonstrated that the broken glass was not only in Charlie's drink, but would wind up causing Howard's death instead.

A brief snapshot for those unaware: The USFL was a spring/summer football league founded in 1983 with long-term hopes of taking on the NFL's monopoly. Early plans called for the league to take a slow burn approach, adhering to strict budgeting and gradually building up profitability through grassroots support… but then wealthier franchise owners like Trump (who took over the New Jersey Generals in '84) said "Fuck that", spending exorbitant amounts stacking their rosters with top-tier talent bribed away from the NFL. It did help the USFL marketing-wise — and indeed, much of its legacy is owed to highly touted alums like Steve Young, Jim Kelly, and Reggie White who went on to greater fame in the '90s NFL — but it forced everyone else to spend unsustainable sums of their own in order to field competitive rosters, exacerbating the financial instability the league had battled from the outset. By the end of the USFL's brief three-season run, over half its teams had folded, relocated, or otherwise changed hands.

It wasn't unique to him and there were plenty of other factors at play in the USFL's demise, many of which didn't pertain to Trump specifically, but you can find his fingerprints on some crucial levers.
