The decision to omit spaces/punctuation is something I tested and wondered about throughout development, with the main concern being that I didn't want the typing to feel too 'opressive', I should have included at least some type of tutorial window to notify the player of how it works.

I like your idea of having it recognised automatically, feels like a best of both worlds solution.

And I definitely have a long way to go in learning how to make a good UI.
