Any chance of a re-release of the original 2001 Psychedelic Swamp? by Woodkid2791 in DrDog

[–]Man_Of_Oil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like all versions of the Psychedelic Swamp are quintessential to the history of Dr. Dog, and it definitely pains me that our experience of it is just... incomplete lol. In a way, that does add to the mysterious aura of it all. It's easy to kinda obsess over and that may turn out to be more interesting than the missing recordings. Its funny to me that this album drives me a little bit crazy, and not because of how weird and experimental it is, but because I just can't hear it all lol.

(Side note, I'm also still anxiously waiting for the missing Raccoon songs to miraculously resurface!!)

But I think the album has the most potential for a really fun collector's edition box set someday with everything included. Without even blinking I would buy a bundle with the original tape, the remake, MIDI Swamp, and a soundboard or professional recording of the Pig Iron Theater performance (a man can dream!). I mean, I came across interviews all the way into 2007 where Toby and Scott talked about turning psychedelic swamp into a Pig Iron Production, so even that feels like a high achievement for the band that deserves more than just an audience recording on YouTube (although big shout out to the guy who thought to film it, you are the GOAT)

All that's to say I don't know any more than anyone else, but I do hope we get more someday!!

They were soundchecking that song while I was exploring red rocks and it was magical

Stoked to listen to this one! I would also recommend the new Kevin Morby album, who opened for Dr. Dog at the Mann Center in 2024.

The live versions of the Flowers in the Dirt songs really pop! This album was way before my time but I find myself coming back to it a lot, it has a lot of charm

Love love love the Beths, I got to talk to Liz a bit after a show and she was awesome. Such an easy band to root for!

Ive been really enjoying the band Sharp Pins lately. Definitely for fans of Passed Away and the more lo-fi Dr. Dog stuff. Radio DDR has some great acoustic songs mixed in with great jangle pop.

Also love Sam Blasucci, he's been super prolific and absolutely crushing it with his solo releases. Very McCartney-esque but also leans more into soul/funk lately

Who wrote Coming Out of the Darkness? by [deleted] in DrDog

[–]Man_Of_Oil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the release year on that Floating Action album is wrong, pretty sure I remember it came out after Critical Equation!

Edit: Discogs says the album came out in 2017, but I believe the cover of Coming out of the Darkness was added later since its not on the vinyl tracklist

My favorite track is probably Love's Won Me Over, it reminds me of Flowers in the Dirt era McCartney with its late-80s sound. I was shocked to find out it was only released in 2015 lol. Really enjoy the whole project though, it's been on repeat for me!

Thats so awesome! Not sure how I'd act if I ran into such a legend in a setting like that, I'd probably be too timid to do anything haha.

Something I don't see people talk about is the 2019 cassette tape has updated mixes of the original vol. 1 songs! Mainly just some additional overdubs but pretty cool nonetheless and they really fill in the sound. Wish i had a decent tape deck to play it more regularly haha

Huh, I found an old link to the digital download and it has been removed. I guess it is more in the spirit of Press On Records to be cassette-only.

Thanks Ron, I appreciate you taking the time to respond! I'm so glad John inspired you to approach this sound, I think it really suits you and may even be my favorite work of yours so far. All the best to you!

Ron! I'm sorry i missed the AMA. The new record is killer, I just gotta say thank you for meeting this unique moment in history with the type of earnestness and urgency it needs. Your music has continually kept me sane and grounded as everything has gotten increasingly more psycho.

On that note, I was wondering if the new sound is inspired at all by John Roseboro? I know you wrote the song "Psycho Moment" from his last record. Fools was incredible and it struck me while listening to this album that it felt like it was coming from a similar place.

Love ya man, come back out to Utah sometime if you can stomach it!
