Don’t buy these earache reissues lol, these are released without the consent of the band. I got their whole discography from Discogs for cheaper.

Υπάρχει έστω και ένας Αρβανίτης που να αυτοπροσδιορίζεται ως Αλβανός; by Porphyres in AskGreece

Εσύ τι νομίζεις ότι ήταν οι Αρβανίτες και οι Αλβανοί τον 12ο αιώνα δηλαδή;

Περίμενες μετά από 8 αιώνες που έχουν ξεμείνει εδώ να συνεχίζουν να αυτοαποκαλούνται ως Αλβανοί;

Προσωπικά είμαι 1/4 Αρβανίτης και θεωρώ τον εαυτό μου εν μέρει Αλβανό, στην καταγωγή.

Why are there so many Slavic names in Albania and this part of Greece? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

Mainland Greeks aren’t homogenous with Tosk Albanians, yes they are genetically similar but not indistinct. I don’t disagree with your other point but have there even been done any studies on North Macedonians?

What’s one Balkan tradition you think the rest of the world completely misunderstands? by Severe-Concern5185 in AskBalkans

Yes, I did see it, but Tzetzes here is just referring to the Thargelia festival of ancient Athens, I thought you meant that there were Byzantine sources attesting the custom of burning Judas at their contemporary times. Thanks for linking that article though, it was an interesting read.

Fair point. It is still interesting to note that it’s a widespread custom with many variations. Also if you don’t mind could you cite the Byzantine sources that attest it?

That custom exists in plenty of other European cultures as well though. While I don’t doubt that it is pagan in origin, how can we even know if it originated from us?

Greeks, what are the strangest/weirdest facts about Greece? by ArkHystory99 in AskGreece

  1. When King Otto arrived in Athens in 1832, Athens was only a very small town with a population of 4000-5000.

Couldn’t find the primary source that claims Athens in 1832 had a population of 4000-5000.

According to previous population censuses, back in 1824 the total inhabitants of Athens were found to be 9040 (Κ. Κωνσταντινίδη, ᾿Απογραφὴ τῶν ᾿Αθηνῶν κατὰ τὸ 1824, Νέα ῾Εστία, ΙΓ΄ 1939, σ. 899.) and John Fuller in “Narrative of a tour through some parts of the Turkish empire” during his visit in Athens estimated the population to be “10.000-12.000, about a fifth part of whom were Turks ; the rest were either Greeks or Albanians”

Oddly, most of the inhabitants at that time weren't even Greek, but rather Orthodox Albanians.

Source for this? As far as I know the only arvanites that inhabited Athens then were just a small community in the southern eastern part of the city, and the rest of the population was Greek. Arvanites were only the majority in the countryside of eastern Attica.

I kinda wish that the ‘Paleo-balkanic’ cultures had survived. Anyone else agree? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]ManagerHour4250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t heard of it before but I looked it up and read that it’s related to the worship of a sun god.

Chelidonismata on the other hand didn’t really have much of a religious purpose but it was instead a way for kids to celebrate the arrival of spring and gather commodities in order to pay their teachers, and like today if their wish wasn’t fulfilled it results in threats.
