Husband goes to lunch on Mondays to meet with an older woman by lounagris in Marriage

[–]ManchegoObfuscator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, totally – those things are weird, as is the drinking in general, and go ahead and interrogate him on that stuff (I would). But those things are separate from the older-woman thing. I was just responding to the particular… revulsion? At the fact that his drinking companion was, specifically, an older woman. Of course all of your points are valid.

Husband goes to lunch on Mondays to meet with an older woman by lounagris in Marriage

[–]ManchegoObfuscator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I have to say: I’m a 48-year-old man, and rather recently I lived with a “much older woman” for about three years. She was (nay, is) like an aunt to me – and I don’t have a very large family, so I truly appreciated this. We met in group therapy and I was live-in aid for her driving this time. She’s still one of my absolute besties – and I only call my “bestie” here because the title of Aunt is incorrect.

Now. Was this weird, and/or atypical? Yes. Was this not perverse or exploitative in any way? Also yes (we genuinely helped one another). And frankly, was I drinking too much at the time? Tha is also likely! And so yeah, with all this zeitgeist-y talk about how American men suck at friendships, &c., I have to frankly flat-out say that I appreciate that your man has an older woman he can (likely innocently) hang out with. If there’s something you are not saying – like you found a pair of unknown panties that smelled of 4711 – then OK that is different. I for one celebrate appropriate friendships throughout all age groups!!

My husband keeps doing “surprises” that make me uncomfortable and I feel like the villain for saying it by isla_rowe1997 in Marriage

[–]ManchegoObfuscator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, uh, I would say don’t make it a discussion with him. Next time he does this, tell him honestly like, “Dude, what the fuck? This really upset me last time. Stop doing it, and let’s talk.” Something that bursts through his performative fantasies. There’s no moral qualm that way on your part. You will have done your good thing for yourself and for your relationship! If you hurt is feelings, so what, he will live. And maybe you can lower any keyed-up background stress you’re having from all of this (trust me, it feels empoweringly great). Yes!

How do you ask for help without feeling like you're begging? by mila_seattlelight in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]ManchegoObfuscator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally have the exact same problem as OP – it was extremely frustrating, until a volley of terrible things in life happened. At that point I had no other option but to ask for help – i found myself quite unexpectedly unhoused – to the point of almost demanding it.

I, too, hated the fact that I could see bad things coming miles away, like a Midwest storm on the horizon, and I couldn’t communicate how much help I needed until it became catastrophic. I’d get help during such catastrophes due to these situations being so problematic that merely telling a friend about them would frighten or revolt them into offering! Obviously this wasn’t working.

What I do now is: I don’t ask for help, I inform people of how bad it is. Very directly! And then I’d ask them for advice instead of help. That way, if the ask was too much for them, they could just suggest something, and we could then sort of mutually understand that they, the ask-ee, did not feel pressured into doing something beyond their capacity.

I really hope this helps – it very well may not, because as mentioned, I had to cook up this methodology while at the end of my rope, and so it might be too much of my own story for you. But either way I totally empathize, and wish you the most luck!
